Coach James Xavier's Gameplan
"This is what we've been preparing for all season long. When I first signed on to take over this program, it was to play in games like this. To reset the culture and make everyone on this campus believe that the Virginia Cavaliers belong in the College Playoffs. We're playing Ohio State. They're deadly. They have a very competent, Heisman-caliber quarterback and the best wide receiver not in the NFL right now. Hell, he's probably top five in the pros right now and he technically has another year to play in college if he wanted to. That offensive line is talented and that defense has future Sunday players throughout. I don't care. They still have to line up against us and give us their best. We're here to play football, not compare recruiting stars. We're going to go in there and play our best."

If you got anybody on defense to cover Jeremiah Smith, put three of them on him. GL

It won't be enough. Nation's top receiver versus one of the worst secondaries I've ever had?

‣ CFB 2026 College Football Playoff Round 1 - Scott Stadium, Charlottesville, Virginia
(9-3, 6-3 B10) #10 Ohio State Buckeyes at #4 Virginia Cavaliers (10-2, 6-2 ACC)
OSU | 7 | 7 | 0 | 7 | 21
UVA | 0 | 14 | 7 | 3 | 24

Hocker kisses Ohio State goodnight, Cavaliers advance on last-second field goal
He hasn't been called upon often. There have been times that the Virginia Cavaliers opted to go for it on fourth down rather than risk the long field goal. But, after such a rollercoaster of a season, it all came down to one man: kicker Jawan Hocker.
With the Ohio State Buckeyes holding on by a thread, the Cavaliers decided to give the ball to kicker Jawan Hocker with time expiring, who nailed a 27-yard field goal to send the Cavaliers to the second round of the College Football Playoff past the Buckeyes by a score of 24-21. Despite being the higher seeded team, it felt as though Virginia was still the underdog. That feeling may be no longer: Virginia has arrived.
Quarterback Anthony Colandrea played a composed game, managing his season of unfortunately-timed turnovers by securing the ball and making the easy plays that the Buckeyes' defense would give them while All-American running back Donte Hawthorne got fire, running for 144 yards on the ground and his customary touchdown score.
The defense held strong, not allowing all-world Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith to go nuclear. His one long touchdown was due to an unfortunately-timed jump from free safety Ethan Minter. He more than made up for it with deflecting another bomb attempt when he was manned up against Smith later in the game. The Cavaliers have successfully ended Smith's college football career, as he is a shoe-in to be a top three pick in the upcoming NFL draft.
Coach James Xavier, elated from his team's performance, had this to say: "I'm on Cloud Nine that these guys played the way they did, we should be damn proud of our efforts. This isn't the ultimate goal, and we know that over here. But, we've got to stop and smell the roses of our accomplishment."
The Cavaliers will take on ACC foe Clemson next weak in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl.
