An offseason in review: New England swung big and are currently rounding second base with home plate in sight
The New England Patriots were ultra aggressive in the offseason, trading away two key players in Cooper Kupp and Kyle Dugger that were instrumental in helping New England reach the playoffs in 2025. They were also big spenders in free agency to help sure up key holes as well as replace the spots vacated by the team's various trades. Here's how New England's acquisitions from last offseason have fared in 2026 with the playoffs within striking distance.

RT Taylor Moton
Compensation: 1yr/$16.5 million
Comparable Options: T Jawaan Taylor (2yr/$24.8m) T Rob Havenstein (1yr/$15.6m)
Season Stats: 80 PFF grade, 897 snaps (100%)
Grade: A
Analysis: The Patriots opened free agency by signing Moton to a one-year, $16.5 million deal that put him near the top of the market among the veteran tackles that were available. New England fans might have been scared from the Brandon Scherff experience the previous year where the accomplished Scherff struggled on the field and with injuries before retiring. Moton has been the complete opposite, playing every snap for the Patriots so far and being their highest graded offensive lineman.

NT Travis Jones
Compensation: 4yr/$48.8 million
Comparable Options: DE Grady Jarrett (2yr/$32.8m) DT D.J. Reader (1yr/$13.6m)
Season Stats: 73 PFF grade, 298 snaps (40%), 9 tackles, 2 tackles for loss
Grade: C-
Analysis: Jones plays a selfless position so the numbers were never going to be eye popping and he's a relatively young player with years left on his deal to validate his top of the market billing. With those caveats out of the way, Jones hasn't had the greatest of seasons even when provided with context as he has been a solid, starter level player for the Patriots when healthy and active. By comparison, Grady Jarrett would have been less of a long term commitment and has six tackles for loss and three sacks on the season. D.J. Reader, who is more comparable as a true nose tackle, has four tackles for loss and three sacks and would have been cheaper overall.

WR Christian Watson
Compensation: 4yr/$48.4 million
Comparable Options: WR Mike Evans (2yr/$30.8m) WR Romeo Doubs (3yr/$23.5m) WR Wan'Dale Robinson (3yr/$31.5m) WR Khalil Shakir (3yr/$34.5m)
Season Stats: 601 snaps (67%), 48 receptions, 799 yards, 9 touchdowns
Grade: A+
Analysis: Prior to the injury, Watson was on pace to have a career year with New England in his first year and was in contention to be among the league leaders in both receiving yards and touchdowns. At the time of the singing, the move was widely panned with skeptics, such as Captain Canada, wondering if Watson was a true WR1 that could replace Kupp while others such as mvp preferred New England to sign Mike Evans. Evans has been productive in Tennessee with 829 yards and so has Romeo Doubs (842), Wan'Dale Robinson (561) and Khalil Shakir (469) to various degrees but it is clear that New England hit on Watson.

DB Jonathan Jones
Compensation: 1yr/$5.3 million
Comparable Options: S Tyrann Mathieu (1yr/$9.35m)
Season Stats: 77.4 PFF grade, 431 snaps (58%), 34 tackles, tackle for loss, 2 pass breakups
Grade: B+
Analysis: Jones has been a great value add for the Patriots who signed him after a one-year exodus in Denver. They brought him back where he's primarily played safety but has also provided the flexibility to play nickel when needed and has been a pivotal piece in helping slow down the Miami Dolphins' offense and other similar high-octane passing attacks. Jones' role should only increase in the playoffs when they need to play some of the NFL's best offenses and for just five million dollars, this was a great signing.

LB Lavonte David
Compensation: 1yr/$9.5 million
Comparable Options: LB Ja'Whaun Bentley (2yr/$16.7m) LB C.J. Mosley (1yr/$8.82m) LB Kenneth Murray Jr. (2yr/$9.7m) LB Nakobe Dean (2yr/$9.7m)
Season Stats: 68.1 PFF grade, 692 snaps (94%), 108 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, 2 interceptions, 7 pass breakups, 2 forced fumbles
Grade: B
Analysis: Like his predecessor Ja'Whaun Bentley, David certainly leaves something to be desired in coverage and prior to the Detroit game, he had a few string of bad performances which led to some wondering if David was truly an upgrade over Bentley. The Detroit game along made his deal worth it, being a key catalyst in one of New England's greatest comebacks in recent years. Even with his flaws, David leads the team in tackles and has forced four turnovers. C.J. Mosley, another option in free agency, was released by the Titans while Bentley is third on Denver's depth chart.

HB Derrick Henry
Compensation: 1yr/$4.2 million
Comparable Options: HB Rachaad White (3yr/$11m)
Season Stats: 374 snaps (41%), 122 carries, 552 yards, 3 touchdowns, fumble, 7 receptions, 96 yards, touchdown
Grade: B
Analysis: At the time of the signing, some wondered why New England -- who already at the NFL's top running game -- had signed Henry since they brought back Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson along with Kyle Monangai who had shown promise as well last year. Stevenson has been in and out of the lineup this year with injury and it's been Henry that's been RB1 for the Patriots with the most carries on the team. While Henry no longer has the long speed to break off long runs, he's still very effective with a 12% broken tackle rate and 40 percent of his yards coming after contact. By comparison, Stevenson is at 29 percent and Gibson is at 25 percent. Rachaad White, who was another option in free agency, is averaging just 3.6 yards per carry this year with the Saints after being waived by Houston earlier this year.

EDGE DeAngelo Malone
Compensation: 1yr/$2.9 million
Comparable Options: OLB Harold Landry (2yr/$17.1m)
Season Stats: 71.1 PFF grade, 365 snaps (49%), 28 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 7 sacks
Grade: A+
Analysis: Did the Patriots just stumble into a double-digit sack artist? It's been feast or famine for Malone whose seven sacks have come in three games but they've all been in the last four weeks as his role has increased with injuries to Chase Young and now Josh Uche. Even before then, he's been a quality backup option as a 3-4 outside linebacker for New England but in recent weeks, the Patriots have used him as an EDGE in obvious passing situations and while he's not a polished pass rusher by any means, his speed and motor has found his way to the quarterback. Even if this is just a flash in the pan, this was great value for less than $3 million.

S Peyton Bowen
Draft Selection: 52nd overall (2nd round)
Comparable Options: S Caleb Downs
Season Stats: 80 PFF grade, 506 snaps (69 percent), 58 tackles, tackle for loss, 2 interceptions, 5 pass breakups
Grade: B+
Analysis: New England passed on Caleb Downs, the consensus top safety in the draft, to trade out of the second round and instead draft Bowen out of Oklahoma. It was a bold move since Downs was the more highly regarded prospect but New England was impressed by Bowen's combine performance after running a 4.48 in the forty and 4.15 in the 20-yard shuttle, placing him in the top three at the Combine among safeties which was especially impressive given his physical playstyle. Through their rookie year, it appears to be the correct move as Downs has struggled to make an impact for the 49ers while Bowen's role with the team is only increasing.

S Kamari Ramsey
Draft Selection: 57th overall (2nd round)
Comparable Options: S Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
Season Stats: 72 PFF grade, 727 snaps (99%), 71 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, interception, 8 pass breakups
Grade: B-
Analysis: After trading back to get Bowen, New England then traded back up to get Ramsey, using the draft capital from the Kyle Dugger trade. While Ramsey might not have the same upside as Bowen as a playmaking safety, he's been the perfect Dugger replacement in terms of being stout against the run as a box safety. Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, picked one pick before, has been solid with the Commanders as a similar run support option.

TE Nyck Harbor
Draft Selection: 91st overall (3rd round)
Comparable Options: TE Jake Johnson
Season Stats: 344 snaps (38%), 25 receptions, 213 yards, 7 touchdowns
Grade: B-
Analysis: The freak athlete out of South Carolina had a blazing start to his career with three touchdowns in his first four games, including three consecutive games with a touchdown. He's slowed down since and hasn't seen a ton of volume in terms of targets with only two games over three catches this entire season but Harbor has been a solid backup to Hunter Henry and does appear to have leapfrogged Oscar Delp (13 receptions) on the depth chart. Harbor has yet to break out the explosiveness and long speed that made him an intriguing prospect with just 8.5 yards per reception but it does feel like at any moment, Harbor could break loose and break through.

HB Gavin Sawchuk
Draft Selection: 128th overall (5th round)
Season Stats: 8 carries, 76 yards, 4 receptions, 31 yards, touchdown, 22 kick returns, 540 yards
Grade: C+
Analysis: Most of Sawchuk's usage has been on special teams, averaging 24.5 yards per return on kickoffs. His 9.5 yards per carry is impressive and perhaps warrant more of a look next season as a traditional running back but for this season, Sawchuk is stuck behind three capable NFL starter level players. If Sawchuk ends up being just a solid return man, there are worst ways to spend a fifth round pick.

Buffalo unable to keep up with roaring Patriots offense as New England furthers division lead
Drake Maye was relegated to mere spectator in New England's first game of the season against the Buffalo Bills as Josh Allen -- a player he was often compared to coming out of the draft -- pulled away late from the Joe Milton-led Patriots to thump them 36-14. It was only right that Maye, now on the field, returned the favor.

Maye threw for 271 yards and two touchdowns, rushing for another as New England pulled away from the Bills in the second and third quarter to further their dominance in the AFC East with a 37-23 win over Buffalo on Monday night.

Maye and Allen exchanged early touchdown scrambles before the Patriots began countering Buffalo's field goals, two in the second quarter, with touchdowns as Antonio Gibson would score the first of two touchdowns and Christian Watson, back in the lineup after a brief stint on the injury report, would score a touchdown late in the second quarter to go into the half up 21-13.

When Buffalo finally did find the endzone with Allen connecting with Elijah Moore in the third quarter to make it a one possession game, Maye would respond with two of his best throws all night with a 47-yard basket dropper to Watson up the left sideline and on third and eight, connected with Xavier Restrepo in the endzone despite Restrepo being blanketed by Matt Milano.
