THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT
USF uses big contributions from RBs Daniel and Suggs to power past ECU

Saturday October 9, 2027 | 7:00PM | Raymond James Stadium | Tampa, Florida

TAMPA, Fla. —USF powered past ECU with 180 yards rushing and four touchdowns on the ground.

USF pulled away for a convincing 45–17 win Saturday night, powered by the unexpected one-two punch of Nicholas Daniel and Connor Suggs, paired with a nearly flawless performance from quarterback Locklan Hewlett.

“They changed the whole energy of our offense,” head coach DJ Porter said after the game. “Those two guys earned this. They’ve been grinding in practice, staying ready. Tonight we needed them, and they delivered.”

Entering Saturday, neither Daniel nor Suggs had seen meaningful action since the opener, in Daniel’s case, he hadn’t touched the ball since Week 1 against NIU. Suggs, meanwhile, had been buried on the depth chart and waiting for his first real opportunity.

They responded with the most dynamic rushing performance USF has produced all season.

Daniel led the way with 104 yards and three scores on just 17 carries while Suggs made the most of his six carries, picking up 62 yards for an average of over 10 yards per carry.

Backup QB Trey Chancellor also contributed a rushing touchdown in the win.

Quarterback Locklan Hewlett took full advantage of the balanced offense, delivering his most efficient game of the year, completing 22 of his 25 attempts for 286 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Hewlett spread the ball beautifully between Tyler Williams and Jordyn Bridgewater, who combined for 14 receptions, 209 yards, and 2 touchdowns.

When the run game forces safeties to creep into the box, Hewlett can carve defenses up and tonight was the blueprint.

ECU’s lone offensive bright spot was senior running back London Montgomery, who battled for 95 tough yards and both Pirate touchdowns. But every time ECU tightened the game, USF answered.

The Bulls’ defense snagged two second-half interceptions, including a key pick by David Igbinoghene that halted ECU momentum.

USF POSTGAME REPORT
USF 45 – EAST CAROLINA 17

Offense
USF’s offense delivered its most complete performance of the season, lighting up ECU for 466 total yards and scoring touchdowns in all four quarters. Quarterback Locklan Hewlett was razor-sharp, finishing 22-of-25 for 286 yards and two touchdowns, bouncing back convincingly after last week’s inconsistent showing.
The biggest storyline of the night, however, belonged to the backfield reshuffle.
Nicholas Daniel and Connor Suggs stepped into major roles, and transformed the offense. Daniel, who had not logged a carry since Week 1, powered the Bulls with 104 yards and three touchdowns, showcasing decisive cuts and an explosiveness the running game had lacked. Suggs, who had yet to record an offensive snap this season, added 62 yards on just six carries, flashing burst and vision that caught ECU off-guard.
Assistan run game coordinator Chris Rogers praised both backs afterward:
Those guys earned it. Suggs has been killing it in practice, always ready, always locked in. Daniel showed a lot of burst and explosiveness that we felt we were lacking in the run game. They both gave us exactly what we needed tonight.
USF’s receiving unit was equally dominant. Tyler Williams (126 yards, TD) and Jordyn Bridgewater (83 yards, TD) continued to establish themselves as one of the American Conference's best 1–2 punches. Explosive plays through the air consistently softened ECU’s defensive structure, allowing the ground game to take over.
It was clean, efficient, and balanced, everything USF wants to be offensively.
Defense
After back-to-back weeks of shaky run defense, USF’s front respondedby slowing down ECU’s London Montgomery who still found the end zone twice, but the Bulls limited explosive runs, controlled the edges, and forced quarterback Jackson Hamilton into difficult passing situations.
Hamilton struggled under pressure, finishing 17-of-30 for 166 yards with two interceptions. Both picks came at pivotal moments, one deep in USF territory, and one off a tipped ball that swung momentum firmly toward the Bulls.
The tackling was significantly cleaner than last week, and the defensive front produced disruptive moments throughout the night.
The group wasn't perfect, Montgomery still averaged nearly seven yards per carry, but the overall structure, discipline, and pursuit angles showed major improvement.
Tony White didn’t shy away from acknowledging the step forward:
We tackled better. We fit our gaps better. We still gave up some leaky yardage, but we looked like ourselves again. Proud of how they responded.
Special Teams
A steady, no-drama performance from the third phase. Nico Gramatica drilled a 33-yard field goal and went 6-for-6 on extra points, bouncing back from last week’s inconsistencies.
Drew McSurdy punted just once but boomed it 53 yards, flipping the field early in the game.
Elton York and David Igbinoghene combined for modest but clean return production, protecting the ball and preserving field position.
Quotables
Today was about execution. We played our brand of football for four quarters, and when we do that, we’re a tough team to deal with.” – DJ Porter, USF Head Coach
We were challenged all week about tackling and getting off blocks. I think we answered that.” – Cedrick Hawkins, Safety
Our confidence is growing. When the offense is rolling like this, everything feels easier.” – Locklan Hewlett, Quarterback
Injury Notes
USF suffered a few injuries throughout the game, including one to linebacker and defensive playcaller Eric Rance, who returned in the third quarter.
With a bye week upcoming all of those players are expected to be available for the game at Florida Atlantic on October 23rd.
Center Teriyan Morman remains out for the season with a foot fracture.
News
Player rotations at running back were a talking point postgame, but Porter reaffirmed the approach:
We’re going to play the guys who practice the right way. Tonight you saw why.
Next Up
Following a week off USF heads into a crucial road matchup at Florida Atlantic, where the Bulls will look to keep momentum rolling and continue tightening the screws defensively as conference play heats up.

Big day from the run game.. Looks like Suggs is making his case for more touches.. Were his big runs, outside sweep type plays or is he more of a just straight up the middle type guy?

Also looks like FIU is staying right there among the leaders in the conference.. Are they on the schedule this year?

Most of Suggs’ runs were inside. Just has more burst than the other RBs and made the most of them

FIU is in CUSA. We play FAU in 2 weeks. Should be a battle.

USF RECRUITING REPORT
BULLS SNAG KUSH FROM UCF
Image

Immanuel Kush, a hard-hitting hybrid safety/linebacker from Tampa, has signed on as the fourth member of USF's 2028 recruiting class.

Last week Kush indicated that USF and UCF were in a tight battle for his pledge. Kush was impressed on his official visit where he was in attendance for the Bulls win over ECU.

“Great visit.” He posted on Instagram. “Great vibes.” He added.

Kush canceled his visit to Orlando scheduled for late November and committed to USF on Monday.

“Loved the way the prepped and played the game. Loved my meetings with Coach White, Coach Cooper and Coach Surtain. Meeting with Coach Porter was incredible as well. Probably one of the most well-rounded staffs in Florida if not the nation.” Kush explained in his announcement. Kush, who transferred to IMG Academy for his senior season, leads the Ascenders in tackles and interceptions.
-With four relatively early top 750 signings the USF 2028 class is currently ranked 14th in the nation and 1st in the American Conference.
-Kicker Dom Bragg, who reportedly moved Florida State into his top position last week, publicly stated that USF was his top school on Tuesday.

USF RECRUITING REPORT
USF GETS BOOST IN THE TRENCHES WITH DOUBS, TUTEN SIGNINGS
Image

Even on an off week USF football keeps winning.

The Bulls have added two more recruits to their call of 2028, bringing the total number of signed players to six.

Cartersville, Georgia's Jacques Doubs has signed on. Doubs is a big, powerful interior defensive linesman who is listed at 6'5” and 301 pounds. He is ranked 547th nationally and 32nd among defensive tackles. His combination of strength and explosiveness should make him an option at nose tackle or defensive tackle in defensive coordinator Tony White's 3-3-5 scheme.

Joining Doubs is Tyler Tuten, an offensive guard from Vero Beach.

Tuten is an agile run blocker who excels when asked to reach, pull or get to the second level.
-USF's class now ranks 12th nationally with 85.35 points. The Bulls lead FAU by nearly 30 points for the best class in the American Conference.
-With a very small senior class of just eight players and with six players already signed USF is expected to dial back their recruiting efforts to focus on a small number of highly desired recruits in the coming weeks.
