2026 Los Angeles Chargers Preview: Is Sams the answer at quarterback?
Since being drafted in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, Hal Sams has surprised many while disappointing some.

Sams has started every game since his rookie season and won AFC Offensive Rookie of the Year and since then, his numbers have steadily improved as he had his best season as a pro last season, averaging 213 passing yards per game with 26 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 62 percent of his passes. Those numbers, while an improvement, are pedestrian numbers and not the type of production that Super Bowl winning quarterbacks produce.

It's no wonder the Chargers have never made the playoffs with Sams at QB.

Expected starter: Sams is by far and away the best thrower of the bunch and should be the starter if no roster moves are made.

Major storyline: Los Angeles added Tate and Wheaton in the offseason, two quarterbacks that are more athletes than throwers. Add that to the fact that Los Angeles reportedly didn't draft Joseph Wentz due to a lack of athleticism and the writing on the wall is clear that this coaching staff and front office want a mobile quarterback. Sams is definitely not that. Is rookie QB Wheaton a legitimate threat?

2026 Los Angeles Chargers Preview: Path cleared for Whitaker to prove critics, doubters wrong
With just fifteen carries as a rookie, many Los Angeles Chargers fans have already panned the draft pick of Felix Whittaker in the second round.

Whittaker, coming out of Middle Tennessee State, was already a criticized draft pick since he wasn't an household name coming out of college and many feared the Chargers reached with the pick as Whittaker dealt with injuries and weight issues as rookie before the season even began.

The team passed on many big name free agents at the position and seemingly, the pathway has been set for Whittaker to be the team's leading rusher this season.

Expected starter: Whittaker will get the bulk of the carries, one would think, followed by a combination of Johnson, Conner and rookie Floyd.

Major storyline: Is there any juice left in veterans Duke Johnson and James Conner? Conner was impressive in the Super Bowl but at 31, the answer figures to be no while Johnson averaged just 2.9 yards per carry last season. This should give rookies Tyron Floyd and Denard Kendricks not only a shot at making the roster but perhaps doing something with it.

2026 Los Angeles Chargers Preview: Will St. Brown and Jefferson finally put it together?
The physical tools have always been there for wide receivers Amon Ra St. Brown and Justin Jefferson. St. Brown was a highly touted recruit coming out of high school with a productive college career while Jefferson was a star receiver at LSU.

St. Brown has put together a few decent seasons while Jefferson last season was an after thought, regressing to just 19 catches on the season after having eleven touchdowns catches this just two seasons ago.

Jefferson and St. Brown enter 2026 as the unquestioned top two receivers on the team and behind them, there's a ton of question marks.

Expected starter: Brown and Jefferson on the outside with a battle for the starting slot spot between Daniel and the veteran Berrios. Daniel had just one catch as a rookie but carries a lot of promise.

Major storyline: Can Medlock avoid the practice squad and make the 53-man roster with his speed? The rest of the boundary receivers aren't anything to write home about and he should be able to compete for some snaps in camp.

2026 Los Angeles Chargers Preview: Can Henry continue to be productive on the wrong side of 30?
One of the few hold overs on offense from the San Diego era, Hunter Henry caught 70 passes last season, the most he's caught since his third season in the league in 2019.

Henry has been a model of consistency, catching at least 40 passes every year since his rookie season and averaging around 40 yards per game each season with a limited amount of missed time.

The Chargers figure to ride Henry once more as the 31-year old is one of their best offensive weapons, even at his advanced age.

2026 Los Angeles Chargers Preview: Gaps aplenty along offensive line
The two best offensive linemen for the Los Angeles Chargers is 35-year old center joining a new team and an offensive tackle that has consistently given up double digit sacks in his career.

And they're the best by a wide margin.

The Chargers chose not to address their offensive line, for the most part, in the off-season and it shows. At left tackle is a veteran swing tackle with zero career starts at the position, at left guard is a battle between two veterans in Darryl Williams and Erek Flowers that haven't showed much upside in their careers.

The offensive line needs a lot of work and in Toronto, general manager Stephon White showed he was able to build an elite offensive line. How long will it take him to do so in LA?

2026 Los Angeles Chargers Preview: With plenty of resources devoted, Chargers front line should be among the elite
With the addition of Clemson's Vincent Zellner in the first round of this spring's draft, the Los Angeles Chargers defensive front now consists of four Chargers first round picks and Takk McKinley, who was a first round pick by the Atlanta Falcons last decade.

The team will be making the transition to a more hybrid look that deploys both 3-4 and 4-3 fronts. Either way, there is plenty of talent to go around in both schemes and they have the personnel to do so up front.

2026 Los Angeles Chargers Preview: Chargers need Scott to live up to top-five pick selection soon
Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Layne Scott has been a relatively consistent pro with the undersized backer recording 87 tackles last season along with three sacks, similar numbers to his rookie campaign where he had 78 tackles and 4.5 sacks. If he wasn't a top four pick, those numbers would be considered just fine but he was and thus, Los Angeles needs a bit more production from him.

Scott moves to inside linebacker now in the Chargers' 3-4 scheme and will be next to Zach Cunningham, a veteran that has been a model of consistency but is likely nearing the end of his areer.

2026 Los Angeles Chargers Preview: Bigby acquisition puts added pressure on expensive secondary
Outside of defensive line, no position group has as much talent on the team as their secondary and it could be argued that the secondary is king.

Los Angeles went out and signed free agent Donovan Bigby to a massive deal, giving them one of the more expensive trios at corner in Bigby, Malik Truman and Desmond King II. Add in a second round pick in Samuel Fleming and it's safe to say that this unit needs to be elite for it to pay off. And that's before we arrived at the safeties with one of the premier players in the league in Derwin James and his trusty side kick Nasir Adderley.
