South rallies from six down in final minutes for state title

FARGO - The last game of the 2013 Dakota Bowl lived up to its billing.

The North Dakota Class 3A state football championship between Fargo South and Bismarck - two of the state's top football programs the last 15 years - was the grand finale.

Bruins senior quarterback Zach Kellen and junior wide receiver Ty Brooks provided the fireworks that eventually led to South posting a 42-34 win over top-ranked Bismarck on Friday at the Fargodome.

Kellen connected with Brooks for a 59-yard game-winning touchdown with 3 minutes, 17 seconds to play, putting South up 35-34.

"I by no means had the best game of my life," said Kellen, who finished 7 of 15 passing for 177 yards. "At the end of the game, everybody trusted me, and the entire team had been picking me up. I knew Ty was going to beat his man. We can count on him in the clutch, and when I saw that he was going deep, I knew I had to throw the ball to him."

South (9-3) trailed Bismarck 34-28 with 4:32 left to play after Demons senior running back Ricardo Galindo scored his third touchdown of the game. Senior Cole Olson missed the extra-point kick, leaving the door open for South to score the upset.

Kellen took full advantage.

His pass to Brooks completed a three-play, 75-yard drive.

"We had to weather the storm," Kellen said. "We knew if we could stick with them, we definitely had a chance. That is what we did. We never backed down and kept pushing back."

Kellen also rushed for a touchdown during the game.

"I have to give credit to Zach Kellen," Fargo South head coach Troy Mattern said. "He wasn't going to be denied. He stepped up and led this football team, especially in the second half. That is what you hope your starting quarterback does in the state championship game."

Bismarck (11-1) had its 28-game winning streak snapped.

"It was two heavyweights going at it and two teams that refused to quit," Bismarck head coach Mark Gibson said. "We had a lot of opportunities in the second half that we didn't get, and we needed to get them. Credit Fargo South. They made some plays down the stretch, but no question both teams gave it all they had in this one."

After Brooks put South up by one, he helped the Bruins make sure the Demons didn't answer and retake the lead, an occurrence that happened a lot in the see-saw game.

Brooks recovered and returned a Bismarck fumble 43 yards for a touchdown to seal the victory and South's 13th state title.

Aside from Galindo, who ran for 172 yards and three scores for Bismarck, sophomore Cody Cannon was the Demons biggest contributor, catching two passes for 25 yards and scoring a touchdown on an 80 yard jet sweep run. He also broke up two passes on defense and had a couple long punt and kick returns.

South junior running back James Johannesson rushed for 237 yards and three touchdowns.

"It was a grind the entire game with those guys," Johannesson said. "I'm just so happy we won the state championship."

SEASON REVIEW: TOUGH TO TOP MINNESOTA'S 2013 STORY

Minnesota was one of the best stories in the nation in 2013, showing resiliency in the face of adversity as the team dealt with health issues to Jerry Kill that forced him to leave the program at one point. The reins were handed to defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys, who thrived as the acting head coach in keeping the team on course with Kill tending to the seizures that are brought on by his epilepsy.

When Kill returned, he worked from the press box on game days. And behind a tough, physical offense and improved defense, the Gophers kept winning en route to a second bowl appearance in succession.

The eight victories are the most for the program since it won 10 in 2003 under Glen Mason. And just think: most picked Minnesota to finish last in the Legends Division. Amazing.

Record: 8-4 overall; 4-4 Big Ten

Bowl: Texas Bowl vs. Syracuse

High point: Want a signature win? Minnesota's 34-23 win over Nebraska was exactly that. The victory snapped a 16-game losing streak vs. the Huskers and was the Gophers' first in the series since 1960. Want more? The win made Minnesota bowl eligible for the second consecutive season, and still with four games remaining on the slate. Another great moment: Minnesota's 24-10 victory over Penn State, marking the team's fourth Big Ten victory in a row, a feat the program last achieved in 1973.

Low point: Jerry Kill suffered a seizure Saturday morning, Oct. 5, which is when he planned to travel to Michigan to coach. Alas, Kill remained in the Twin Cities and the Gophers got drubbed, 42-13, by the Wolverines in the battle for the Little Brown Jug. Defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys assumed command of the team. It was Kill?s fifth game-day seizure in three seasons at Minnesota, and the second of 2013. He did not coach the second half vs. Western Illinois on Sept. 14, the third game he wasn't able to finish because of a seizure. Kill returned for the next two games. The loss in Ann Arbor was the second in a row for Minnesota after a 4-0 start. And now the status of Kill was unknown. What direction would the team go?

Offensive MVP: RB David Cobb. He began the season as the third-stringer but got a chance to excel when injuries struck Donnell Kirkwood (ankle) and Rodrick Williams (toe). The junior became one of the Big Ten's most underrated backs, running 219 times for 1,111 yards and seven touchdowns to become the program?s first 1,000-yard rusher since Amir Pinnix in 2006. Cobb eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark six times, including in five of the last six games.

Defensive MVP: T Ra'Shede Hageman. The giant Hageman (6-6, 311 pounds) eschewed the NFL to return for his senior season. And, it paid off. Hageman earned All-Big Ten honors, notching 11 tackles for loss and nine passes defensed (a high number for a DT) for a Golden Gophers defense that was No. 5 in the Big Ten in scoring (22.3 ppg). Not bad for a guy who arrived on campus as a tight end.

Minnesota Football: Philip Nelson Is Announcing That He is Transferring

Dan Barriero was the first to tweet it and then shared a statement from Philip Nelson.

Nelson's statement as to why he is transferring.

"I want to thank Coach Kill for the opportunity to play football at the University of Minnesota. I have the uttermost respect for Coach Kill and what he's done for this program. I also want to reach out to to all the great Minnesota fans that supported the football program and say thank you. Your effort makes a difference."

"For me, I am looking to play in a system that centers more around the pass game which utilizes my skill sets. I am excited to go out and meet with programs that match up with my talents."

This was a season that saw the coaching staff go back and forth between Nelson and Leidner throughout the season. Just when it appeared as though Leidner had taken the reigns and put himself as the top of the QB depth chart, Nelson came in to lead the Gophers on their Big Ten 4-game win streak. Nelson certainly struggled early in the Texas Bowl and was quickly pulled in favor of Mitch Leidner. There seemed to be very little clarity to the situation as the season ended and things are just as murky.

More reaction to come, but this is fairly big news for Gopher Football 2014. Quarterback is the biggest question mark heading into 2014 and this does nothing to make things clearer, even with one less name on the depth chart.

UPDATE: Joe Christensen provides more information by getting in contact with Nelson's father.

Nelson met with Gophers coach Jerry Kill on Wednesday, and it was an amicable parting according to Nelson's father.

Pat Nelson said Kill offered to use his contacts to help the quarterback find the best landing spot possible. Nelson hopes to enroll somewhere quickly so he's eligible to play in spring football.

It appears he is looking outside of the Big Ten to ensure that he'll have three years to play two and not lose a year of eligibility.

With Philip Nelson out of the picture the Gophers have a three way QB battle on their hands. Redshirt sophomore Mitch Leidner played in parts of 10 games last season, throwing for 619 yards with three touchdowns and one interception on 40 of 78 (55.1%) passing. Leidner also ran for 407 yards and seven touchdowns. He is the only QB on the roster with game experience.

Joining him in the battle are two redshirt freshmen in Cade Cannon and Chris Streveler. Both were listed as three star dual threats by Rivals.com at the time of their recruitment. As stated neither have played in a game. Streveler looked lost on the few snaps he took in the 2013 spring game which isn't surprising and shouldn't count against him. Cannon had a minor injury and was held out of the 2013 spring game.

All three should get plenty of playing time in the upcoming spring game.

From what I've seen briefly in spring practices so far Cannon and Leidner have the upper hand with Streveler a bit behind. Offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover said the three are all “pretty much even”.

What I've seen is Streveler is the worst passer and he hasn't set himself apart enough as a runner, granted we're talking practices and drills with very little contact on QBs. Leidner is slightly more accurate than Cannon and seems a bit ahead in the playbook. Cannon looks to have a bit stronger arm and is definitely a better athlete. He keeps his eyes upfield and has made some nice, exciting throws on the run. All three have made their share of mistakes.

The spring game next week will likely go a long way in telling us who will be the starter when the Gophers host Southern Miss on August 30th.
