Good win as expected. The rest of the season looks promising to win out and get into the championship. Navy dropping to 0-10, ouch.
Glad to get the win and good timing for UNT to lose to FAU. Hopefully we get through these next two unscathed and make it to the conference championship game.

I really don’t like seeing the service academies so downtrodden, I had thought about doing some roster management for them in the offseason but I might just move them out of the American so I don’t have to see it.

Thoughts?

I would make them independent. They should be anyways imo since they are unlike any other school.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL WRAP-UP
AMERICAN CONFERENCE NEWS

Army and Navy set to leave American Conference immediately following this season
In a move that had been whispered about for months but still managed to jolt the college football world, both Army and Navy announced this week that they will leave the American Conference following the 2027 season. Air Force, while not formally committing to the same direction, is widely believed to be nearing a similar decision regarding its future in the Mountain West.

The news comes at a time when both Army and Navy are limping through difficult campaigns. Army sits at 2–7, Navy at a stunning 0–10, and both programs have struggled to adapt to an increasingly commercialized, transfer-driven, NIL-dominated landscape that often feels at odds with service-academy philosophy. With the pressure of conference schedules, revenue expectations, and championship structures mounting each year, administrators from both academies have decided now is the moment to chart a new direction.

For Army head coach Jeff Monken, the move wasn’t about running from struggle—though the losses have been painful. It was about returning to what he describes as “the core identity of Army football.”

“We compete because competition makes better officers,” Monken said after practice earlier this week. “But we’ve been trying to live in a world that doesn’t reflect who we are. I don’t need a conference title race to motivate my guys. I need a schedule that reflects our mission, not someone else’s business model.”

Navy head coach Brian Newberry expressed similar sentiments, even as his team battles through what is shaping up to be the program’s most difficult season in decades. Newberry, whose Midshipmen have lost multiple games by narrow margins but have also been physically overwhelmed by deeper, more transfer-laden rosters, said the academy felt increasingly like an outlier within the conference ecosystem.

“Every week we line up against teams built through NIL deals and year-to-year roster reshuffling,” Newberry said. “We don’t operate that way. We can’t operate that way. Our guys are here to serve, to grow, to lead—and football is part of that journey, but it isn’t the engine driving the institution. Honestly, getting back to independence lets us breathe again.”

According to administrators familiar with the discussions, the academies have grown uneasy with the escalating financial and roster pressures within The American. Both have felt boxed in by conference scheduling requirements that restrict their ability to maintain long-running rivalries, national recruiting trips, and flexible travel arrangements that fit the unique demands of military academies.

Army’s athletic director, while not offering details, noted in a prepared statement that “conference football increasingly requires commitments that do not align with the operational realities or institutional mission of a service academy.” The statement went on to emphasize the desire for more autonomy in scheduling, greater control over media obligations, and the ability to balance athletics with the rigorous, time-intensive military environment.

For Navy, the move also reflects a frustration with how rapidly the college football landscape has evolved. The postseason tie-ins, revenue structures, and expectations for facility upgrades and NIL visibility have strained the program in ways that were never intended when it joined the league in 2015. Newberry alluded to this in emotional terms.

“Our kids don’t get NIL packages,” he said. “They don’t enter the portal. They’re not here to build a brand. They’re here to build a life of service. That’s not better or worse—it’s just different. And the sport has shifted so fast that we’ve ended up trying to play a game with rules that don’t match our reality.”

Meanwhile, Air Force has offered no official statement, though Mountain West administrators have privately acknowledged they expect the Falcons to follow suit. Air Force has maintained a stronger on-field product than its academy peers, but coaches and athletic officials have long hinted at concerns similar to those voiced by Army and Navy. One source called it “a matter of timing, not intention.”

American Conference commissioner Tim Pernetti addressed the news cautiously but confidently, emphasizing both stability and opportunity.

“We’re moving forward with 12 teams for now,” Pernetti said. “The league is strong, the brand is strong, and we have room to grow. If expansion makes sense down the road, we’re absolutely open to it. But today, our focus is on supporting our member schools and maintaining the competitive balance that makes this conference special.”

If all three service academies do depart their conferences, it would mark the first time since the mid-1990s that the nation’s military football programs stood entirely independent of league affiliations. For some, it is a step backward. For others, it is a return to legacy.

Monken, whose team faces Navy next month in what may now feel like a symbolic passing from one era into another, framed it simply.

“We’re different. We always have been. And the more the sport changes, the more important it becomes that we stay true to who we are. Independence lets us do that. It brings us back to the game we’re meant to play.”

Newberry echoed that sentiment, even in the middle of an 0–10 season.

“Look, I want to win,” he said. “I want to win badly. But what matters most is that when these young men leave here, they’re ready for the world they’re entering. If football independence helps support that, then this is the right move—no matter what our record says.”

For two programs searching for footing in a shifting landscape, the path ahead may finally resemble something solid again: tradition, identity, and total control over their future.

USF RECRUITING REPORT
BULLS LAND DL, K IN GOOD WEEK FOR RECRUITING

Image

Following their convincing win on the field USF football picked up two more wins on the recruiting trail.

Carrolton, Georgia DT Jahzir Sowells committed to the Bulls after a great visit for the win over Navy. Sowells is listed as the nation's 8165th best player and the 44th best defensive tackle. His combination of strength and acceleration should make him a good fit on the USF defensive line.

Joining Sowells is Ocala's Dom Bragg, the nation's 7th ranked kicker. Bragg bounced back and forth between coming to Tampa or heading to Tallahassee. After meeting with the USF staff and former Seminole Dorian McSurdy Brag has elected to sign with USF.
-The signing gives USF a total of nine signings, all of them three stars. That is good for the 17th best class score in the nation with a 118.50. It is also good for first in the American Conference with Rice's 30th ranked class next in line.

Coach Porter's Notes
UTSA gives up the most yards per game (437.4) in the conference, including 345.5 through the air, I expect to exploit that.
We can not afford to give them extra possessions on turnovers.
Solid DL. DT Blaylock (#93) gets good push up the middle, run or pass.
Linebackers Shaw (#31) and Davis (#45) are smart and good tacklers. They do lack speed so we will look for mismatches in the passing game.
Their secondary is the weakness. We must attack them.
Coach White's Notes
UTSA slings it, no doubt. Their QB, Rome (#2) leads the conference in yards and TDs. We need to get after the QB and keep the receivers in check.
The run game is an afterthought but they can still do some damage if we let him.
Wilson (#87) and Smith (#9) are the top two receivers, but Wallace (#41) who plays in the slot, leads them in yards and TDs.
Decent OL, not the best or worst we have faced.
