USF overcomes slow start to dominate UTSA

Saturday November 20, 2027 | 3:30PM | Raymond James Stadium

Tampa, Florida - On a humid November afternoon at Raymond James Stadium, USF didn’t just beat UTSA, they overwhelmed them. After a sluggish opening quarter and an early safety that briefly stunned the home crowd, the Bulls responded with one of their most complete performances of the season, rolling past the Roadrunners 44–12 in a game that showcased explosive offense, relentless defensive pressure, and a surprisingly dominant effort against a UTSA unit known for lighting up scoreboards.

For a UTSA team that entered the matchup with a reputation for balance and playmaking, South Florida’s defensive showing was nothing short of shocking. The Roadrunners were limited to just 219 yards of total offense, struggled to establish the run, and produced only one offensive touchdown, well after the outcome was decided. USF head coach DJ Porter called it “one of our most complete games of the year,” and the Bulls played like it.

Once USF shook off the early jitters, junior quarterback Locklan Hewlett took complete control. Hewlett delivered one of the finest performances of his career, completing 26 of 40 passes for 396 yards and three touchdowns while relentlessly attacking UTSA’s secondary. His favorite target, Tyler Williams, completely dismantled the Roadrunners’ coverage looks, finishing with 10 receptions for 218 yards and two long touchdown strikes of 53 and 51 yards. Dawann Troup added another 112 yards on five catches, including a 75-yard burst on a screen pass that ignited the stadium, while Jordyn Bridgewater added a key red-zone touchdown as the Bulls put together a 21-point surge spanning the second and third quarters.

USF’s defense played every bit as well as the offense. UTSA quarterbacks Tucker Parks and Emanuel Rome were held to a combined 120 passing yards with no touchdowns, and the Roadrunners’ typically reliable rushing attack mustered only 99 yards on 35 attempts. Linebacker Eric Rance was a force, recording three tackles for loss and a sack, while Ira Singleton contributed two TFLs of his own. The Bulls consistently closed lanes, tackled in space, and suffocated UTSA’s attempts to get their playmakers involved.

The Roadrunners’ struggles on third down, just 2-for-13, proved fatal for any rhythm they hoped to generate, and USF’s offense repeatedly capitalized with quick-strike drives. Even the special teams battle leaned heavily in the Bulls’ favor. Nico Gramatica drilled field goals from 46 and 20 yards and converted all four PATs, while Adam Zouagui, Gramatica's backup, added his first career field goal late to punctuate the win.

UTSA continued to fight, getting 61 hard-earned rushing yards from John Ricci and a fourth-quarter touchdown from D.J. Tyms, but they never found the explosive moments they usually rely on. Drops stalled key drives, protection issues allowed USF defenders free shots at the quarterbacks, and the Bulls’ defense eliminated UTSA’s perimeter options.

In the end, USF outgained UTSA 554–219, doubled them in first downs, dominated time of possession, and outplayed the Roadrunners in every phase.

For UTSA, the loss is a reminder that even potent, well-coached offenses can be derailed when they lose battles at the line of scrimmage and fail to flip the field. For USF, it may be the moment their identity fully crystallized—a fast, physical, confident group capable of imposing its will on anyone.

USF POSTGAME REPORT
USF 44 – UTSA 12
Image

Offense
–USF delivered one of its most explosive offensive performances of the season, overcoming a slow start to pile up 554 total yards and dominate a UTSA defense known for struggles against the pass. The Bulls leaned on a relentless passing attack, as quarterback Locklan Hewlett shredded the Roadrunners’ secondary for 396 yards and three touchdowns.
–After spotting UTSA an early safety, Hewlett settled in and began attacking deep and outside the numbers. His connection with star wideout Tyler Williams proved unstoppable as Williams erupted for 218 yards on 10 catches, including touchdown grabs of 53 and 51 yards.
–USF supplemented the aerial assault with efficient production on the ground. Connor Suggs, Nicholas Daniel, Steven Snead, and George Shembo combined for 141 rushing yards, consistently generating chunk plays to keep UTSA’s linebackers off balance. Shembo punctuated the win with a 7-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
–Backup quarterbacks also made an impact. Joshua Brantley entered for a red-zone package and delivered a key 3-yard touchdown pass to Jordyn Bridgewater late in the first half. TJ Stanley played the fourth quarter and added a 14-yard completion to help extend a drive.
–Freshman receiver Dawann Troup provided a massive spark with a 75-yard catch-and-run on a screen play, giving USF another explosive play.
Defense
–USF’s defense delivered a surprisingly dominant performance against one of the American Conference’s most potent offenses. UTSA entered the game averaging big numbers through the air behind quarterback Emanuel Rome, but the Bulls held the Roadrunners to just 219 total yards and only 120 passing yards.
–The Bulls allowed UTSA to convert just 2 of 13 third-down attempts and denied explosive plays throughout the afternoon. Defensive coordinator Tony White dialed up a mix of pressures and simulated looks that kept the Roadrunners off rhythm.
–Safety Najee Jones led with seven tackles and a tackle for loss, while Cedrick Hawkins and Eric Rance each added six stops. Rance also recorded three tackles for loss and a sack.
–Up front, Ira Singleton and Danny Felton each chipped in disruptive backfield plays, and Jahari Grant added a sack that stalled a critical UTSA drive.
–USF’s front consistently controlled the line, holding John Ricci, UTSA’s lead back, to 61 yards and limiting quarterback-designed runs that typically fuel the Roadrunners’ tempo-based attack.
Special Teams
–Senior kicker Nico Gramatica was again perfect, going 2-for-2 on field goals including a 47-yarder, along with 4-for-4 on PATs. Adam Zouagui added a 27-yard field goal and an extra point late in the fourth quarter.
–Punter Dorian McSurdy watched the duration of the game, not being called upon to punt once.
–Elton York delivered a strong day in the return game with 20 yards on a kickoff and 23 yards on punt returns, while David Igbinoghene added 25 yards on two kickoff returns.
Quotables
We knew UTSA had one of the most dangerous offenses in the conference, so for our defense to step up like that, it was huge. That’s the standard.” – DJ Porter, USF Head Coach
Our receivers were unbelievable today. When they're winning one-on-ones like that, I just have to get the ball out.” – Locklan Hewlett, Quarterback
We didn’t let them dictate tempo. We forced long drives, tackled well, and took away the middle of the field.” – Eric Rance, Linebacker
We showed different fronts, different personnel, and the guys handled it. UTSA didn’t get a lot of the looks they’re used to winning against.” – Tony White, Defensive Coordinator
Injury Notes
–Reserve guard Emmett Parks remains out with a broken collarbone and is unlikely to return this season. His absence continues to test USF’s depth along the interior offensive line.
–Center Teriyan Morman remains sidelined with a compound foot fracture and is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season.
News
–With the win, USF improves to 9–2 overall and 6–1 in American Conference play, strengthening its position for a conference championship berth.
-USF has appeared on the CFP rankings, checking in at #24.
–The Bulls now sit atop the conference standings, tied with Tulane who shockingly lost to Temple on Saturday.
-Tyler Williams' 218 yard, two score performance earned him the American Conference's offensive player of the week nod.
–UTSA falls to 4–7 with the loss and has been eliminated from bowl contention.
Next Up
–USF closes the regular season by hosting Army on Saturday, November 27th. A win would lock in a spot in the American Conference Championship Game.

yeah we've gotten comfortable slinging it a bit so we want to keep that up
hoping for similar success against Army as we have had the past couple games
did not expect Tulane to lose for sure

USF RECRUITING REPORT
BULLS ADD ANOTHER LB IN SAUER, VERSATILITY IN LANOVOI

Image

For USF it was another win on the field followed by more wins on the recruiting trail as they received two more commitments.

MIKE linebacker Enrique Sauer from Bradenton will join the Bulls in the spring. Sauer is a great tackler who tracks down plays well and can hold his own in coverage as well. He is ranked 73rd among inside linebackers.

Stanley Lanovoi is a bit of a wildcard, with possible fits at a number of positions including interior offensive or defensive line, fullback or blocking tight end. At 6'1” and 307 pounds he most likely fits in the trenches but he was a contributor with the ball in his hands for Raines these past two seasons.
-The signing gives USF a total of 11 signings, all of them three stars. That is good for the 15th best class score in the nation with a 135.75. It is also good for first in the American Conference with FAU's 32nd ranked class next in line with a score of 109.25.

Coach Porter's Notes
Army has a solid defense. They are top five in the conference in yards allowed and they have the best turnover differential in the conference.
LBs Farmer (#51) and will come on blitzes and track down runners.
ILB Jackson (#7) is the leader of the defense. He is a very good tackler and he is quicker than you would expect.
The secondary is not a strength but CB Tabor (#14) and FS Boatwright (#30) have great speed and can make up a lot of ground quickly.
Coach White's Notes
Army is going to look a lot like Navy did a couple weeks ago offensively with a bit more dynamic passing game.
QB Tennison (#17) is very experienced, his strength may be as a runner but he is dangerous enough as a passer to make us pay if we make a mistake.
They have a good mix of ballcarriers with Tremba (#16) able to get around the outside while Self (#2) and Jesiolowski (#85) will try to beat us up inside.
WRs Ford (#38) and Zimmerman (#84) have some speed and can beat coverage at times.
The OL is below average overall but they are a cohesive unit that can get defenses on their heels at times.

Damn the service academies are really struggling this year.

And the Army Minutemen? Think you mean the black knights…also funny to see Caleb LaVallee transfer from FSU to West Point

It’s a bummer to see them struggle

I used the navy preview as a template for the army one and it autocorrected midshipmen to minutemen and I didn’t catch it, thanks

It’s odd to see any transfers to/from the academies
