Mississippi State announce Brett Mixon as official starting quarterback

Mississippi State head coach G.J. Kinne has named true freshman quarterback Brett Mixon as the team's starting quarterback for the rest of the season.

Mixon, a four-star recruit out of Texas, made his college debut last week against Memphis, throwing for 514 yards and eight touchdowns, both school records for a first-time starter and a freshman. Mixon's second pass was intercepted and returned for a touchdown as the ball was jarred loose from his hand and fell to a defensive lineman.

Kinne said that the plan was originally to play multiple quarterbacks in the opener but from the second series on, the game flow led to Mixon playing the entire game and believes he's done enough to earn being the starter.

"I think he played really well," Kinne said to the media on Wednesday, "His command of the offense, his ability to get the ball to the right place at the right time."

Kinne added that the team needs to protect Mixon a lot better going forward, noting the seven sacks they surrendered and says that changes along the offensive line are likely. Four of the five starters surrendered a sack in the opener, including left guard L.J. Prudhomme who was benched in the second half for third-year sophomore Tony Polumbus.
