PORTER AND HIS SQUAD LIFT THE SEC CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY
Twelve months ago, Arkansas was searching for direction.

Porter Davis was searching for redemption.

Saturday night inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium, they were both celebrating an SEC Championship.

Behind a punishing rushing attack, a gutsy relief performance from quarterback Cornelius Rivas III, and a defense that delivered in key moments, No. 9 Arkansas stunned No. 17 Georgia 24–21 to cap one of the most dramatic turnarounds in college football under first-year head coach Porter Davis.

The victory pushed Arkansas to 11–2 overall and completed a meteoric rise for a program that entered the season with modest expectations but now leaves Atlanta carrying the SEC trophy.

And they did it after losing starting quarterback D'Eriq Robinette on just the second offensive play of the game.

“Of course we want D'Eriq in there. He wanted to be in there. You've got to put safety first. Sometimes you have to protect a player from themselves.” Porter said when asked about the injury and if Robinette could have returned.

“That’s who this team is,” Davis said afterward. “Adversity never broke us all season. Somebody always stepped up.”

This time, it was nearly everyone.

Georgia struck first when tailback Dan Lake ripped off a 26-yard touchdown run midway through the opening quarter, but Arkansas answered quickly after Rivas entered the game unexpectedly. The backup quarterback settled the offense and led a composed scoring drive that ended with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Brant to tie the game at 7–7.

Lake continued to power Georgia’s offense in the second quarter, plunging in from two yards out to reclaim the lead. But Arkansas once again responded late in the half as Rivas capped a physical drive with a 9-yard touchdown run with five seconds remaining before halftime.

That sequence changed the tone of the game.

Arkansas faced a fourth and inches inside the Georgia ten yard line. The offensive line pressed Porter to go for it. Porter obliged and they picked up the first down with Rivas III scoring on the next play.

Arkansas dominated possession throughout the night, holding the football for more than double the time that Georgia did while repeatedly leaning on its offensive line and rushing attack. The Razorbacks piled up 216 rushing yards and 405 total yards overall while limiting Georgia to just 46 rushing yards outside of Lake’s scoring production.

Marques Long was the centerpiece of that effort, grinding out 116 hard-earned yards on 24 carries against one of the nation’s most talented defensive fronts. Jacquez Powell added 63 yards and what proved to be the game-winning touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

Rivas was equally important.

Thrown into the biggest game of the season unexpectedly, the sophomore completed 15 of 20 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown while adding another score on the ground.

More importantly, he protected the football and kept Arkansas ahead of schedule offensively throughout the night.

His calm presence allowed Arkansas to stay balanced even after Robinette’s injury threatened to derail the game plan.

“We believe in him,” Long said. “Nobody panicked.”

Arkansas finally seized its first lead of the night in the third quarter after Joey Christodoulou drilled a 24-yard field goal to make it 17–14. From there, the Razorback defense began taking control.

Bart Wilson and Roger Smith each recorded sacks, while the secondary repeatedly tightened in key passing situations. Brian Browne picked off a pass in Arkansas territory.

Georgia quarterback Wade threw for 214 yards, but Arkansas forced the Bulldogs into uncomfortable third downs all evening and limited explosive opportunities outside of a handful of completions to Johnson and Thompson.

Then came the defining drive.

With under four minutes remaining, Powell powered through Georgia’s front for a 3-yard touchdown run that extended the Arkansas lead to 24–14. Georgia answered quickly with another Lake touchdown, but Arkansas closed the game behind its running attack.

The numbers told the story of Arkansas’ transformation under Davis.

The Razorbacks finished with 21 first downs to Georgia’s 10, controlled the line of scrimmage, committed zero turnovers, and converted key fourth downs in clutch situations. Perhaps most impressively, they did it against a Georgia program that has long represented the standard of SEC physicality.

Now Arkansas suddenly looks capable of becoming part of that conversation itself.

When Porter Davis arrived in Fayetteville, the expectation was gradual improvement.

Instead, he delivered an SEC Championship in Year One.

What began as a rebuilding project has rapidly become one of the sport’s best stories.
