Stanford set to face Michigan but likely won't see former quarterback in early season showdown Michael Harrell September 5, 2029, 03:03 PM ET
PALO ALTO, Calif. — When Stanford travels to Ann Arbor later this week, it won’t just be another ACC–Big Ten clash. It will be a reunion with Josh Ghee, the former “starter in waiting” at Stanford who transferred to Michigan last winter in search of a clearer path to the field.
Ghee flashed promise in limited action last season, playing well in the Cardinal’s bowl game and positioning himself as the presumed successor to Tavien St. Clair. But his move to Michigan hasn’t gone as planned. Instead of stepping into the Wolverines’ starting role, Ghee found himself behind Randall Gage on the depth chart, leaving him in a backup role once again.
Meanwhile, Stanford turned the page with redshirt junior Zach Hoppes, a transfer from Kansas who won the job in spring camp. Hoppes delivered a statement in the season opener, throwing for five touchdowns in a win over USC — a performance that has quickly quieted doubts about Stanford’s offense in the post-St. Clair era.
Asked about the upcoming matchup with his former quarterback, Stanford head coach Bubba Mack kept his focus on the present while offering a subtle jab. “I’m focused on the guys that want to be here, the guys that want to compete,” Mack said. “I’m thankful for the year Josh gave us at Stanford, and I’m thankful he moved on. We're happy with where we are at and hopefully he feels the same way."
For the Cardinal, the Michigan trip is both a test against a top Big Ten opponent and a chance to measure themselves against a defense that will challenge Hoppes and Stanford’s retooled passing game.
