Hurricanes cruise part Kansas State to advance to College Football Playoffs Semifinal
Miami quarterback Keke Hagg threw for 229 yards and two touchdowns, and the Miami Hurricanes kept their season alive with a commanding 34-14 victory over Kansas State in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl.
Miami opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown pass from Hagg to Eric Incoom in the first quarter on a jet touch pass. Shortly after, Chris Johnson Jr. extended the lead with a 23-yard touchdown run, giving the Hurricanes a quick 14-0 advantage.
In the second quarter, Isaac Brown powered his way into the end zone from one yard out, pushing Miami's lead to 21-0 before halftime. Kansas State struggled to find its rhythm against a fierce Miami defense that recorded nine sacks on quarterback Blake Barnett, led by Jacques Turk and Kevin Yeboah.
The third quarter saw Hagg connect with Incoom again for another 1-yard score, stretching the lead to 28-0. Incoom was Hagg’s favorite target, finishing with seven catches for 123 yards and two touchdowns.
Kansas State managed to find the end zone late, with Barnett tossing a 36-yard touchdown pass to DeVon Rice in the fourth quarter. By then, Miami had its backup ins with Judd Anderson finding William Fowles for a 4-yard touchdown pass, restoring Miami’s sizable lead. Barnett later threw a 17-yard touchdown to Joe Jackson with six seconds left, but it was too little, too late.
Despite three sacks allowed, Miami's offensive line held up enough to enable a balanced attack. The Hurricanes also leaned on a tenacious defense, highlighted by Artavius Jones and Jacques Turk, who combined for four sacks and multiple tackles for loss.
With the win, the Hurricanes will face Clemson or Tennessee in the Semifinals.
