‣ CFB 2028 Cotton Bowl - Cowboys Stadium, Arlington, Texas
(13-2, 6-2 SEC) #2 Tennessee Volunteers vs #6 Miami Hurricanes (11-4, 6-2 ACC)
TENN | 7 | 6 | 7 | 3 | 23
MIA | 3 | 0 | 10 | 7 | 20
Congrats, y'all won.
A Tua Tagovailoa moment for a fellow lefty, true freshman? A redemption arc for the benched starting quarterback? Nope, just pain for Miami fans as their comeback efforts fell short in Tennessee's 23-20 win over the Hurricanes to advance to the CFP National Championship Game to face off against LSU.
The Hurricanes benched quarterback Keke Hagg in the third quarter, trailing 20-6 and brought in true freshman quarterback Bernie Flowers. Flowers would complete a 45-yard touchdown pass to Joshisa Trader and nearly tied the game in the fourth quarter when his pass to Jeremiah Smith was intercepted by Vols defensive back Jordan Matthews, who intercepted Hagg in the first half and returned it for a touchdown on a broken screen play.
Miami would go back to Hagg as Flowers left the game with a back injury during a two minute drill, trailing by ten points following a Tennessee field goal. On his first pass back, Hagg found backup running back Quincy Dukes in the corner of the endzone for a 23-yard touchdown. Dukes was only in the game due to Miami's receivers gassing out during the two-minute drill to get the Hurricanes near the endzone.
Hagg nor Flowers would get a chance to lead the Hurricanes on a game winning drive as Tennessee running back Peyton Lewis picked up the first down on third and short.
