With the season opener against Southern Miss less than a week away Jerry Kill has finally announced a starting quarterback.

“Cade Cannon's going to be the starter.” Kill announced earlier today. “We've seen good things from Cade, Mitch and Chris. So, Cade will start but we're playing all three. Rotating. Well continue to do that 'til we've seen someone set themselves apart.”

What's the old saying about having more than one quarterback?

Actually, I think this is a good thing. We get to see what each of them can do and there's not some arbitrary commitment to one or the other that makes the coaching staff feel like they have to stick with him through struggles. I do find it interesting that Cannon starts, if that's some indication of the perceived pecking order and Cannon beat out the more experienced Leidner then that could mean Cannon is the better player and he just needs reps to set himself apart.

Minnesota hosts Southern Miss on the 30th. Ski u mah.

Gophers run all over Southern Miss in 21-16 win
Minneapolis, Minnesota - Redshirt freshman QB Cade Cannon ran for 100 yards and two touchdowns while also competing 8 of 9 pass attempts for 79 yards in a 21-16 win against Southern Miss.

Jerry Kill indicated prior to the game that all three of his quarterbacks would play against Southern Miss. They did. Cade Cannon started the game and scored on a 16 yard touchdown run to cap Minnesota's first possession. After Mitch Leidner and Chris Streveler had their possessions end in punts Cannon scored again before halftime, putting the Gophers up 14-10 at the break.

Cannon stayed in for the remainder of the game and led Minnesota (1-0) to the win.

Kill was not forthcoming when asked about the QB situation going forward but hinted that they would be moving forward with the rotation in place.

Minnesota will travel to face TCU next week.

TCU tops Minnesota with late field goal
Fort Worth, Texas - Cade Cannon started the game with possession at Minnesota's one yard line after a great punt by TCU. Cannon led the team on a 99 yard scoring drive, capped with a five yard TD run by Donnell Kirkwood. Despite his early success the coaching staff stuck to their guns, continuing the QB rotation.

After a 75 yard TD run by TCU's Aaron Green it was Mitch Leidner's turn at the helm. He too led the team to a score, completing 4 of 6 pass attempts for 50 yards and finishing things off with a six yard touchdown pass to Rodrick Williams Jr on a screen.

Chris Streveler kept the streak alive, completing 4 of 6 passes for 44 yards and setting Ryan Santoso up for a 17 yard field goal.

Green broke another long run, scoring from 69 yards out for TCU. A few plays later Cannon was picked off before halftime and Minnesota clung to a 17-13 lead at the break.

After halftime Leidner went 0 for 3 leading to a quick punt. Streveler's drive met the same fate. Cannon then led the team to another field goal, putting Minnesota up 20-13. Trevone Boykin found Brandon Carter for a 38 yard TD to tie things at 20-20 late in the third quarter.

After a Kirkwood fumble Boykin put TCU up 27-20 with a three yard TD run with just under five minutes to play. Cade Cannon put together a heroic drive, connecting with Drew Wolitarsky for a two yard TD pass with 1:26 left to play.

TCU's Jaden Oberkrom split the uprights from 23 yards out with six seconds left. Leidner did complete a long pass down the left sideline as time expired.

“Tough one to lose.” Jerry Kill said after the game. “We were in it. Guys made plays and we stayed in it. Needed a couple defensive plays at the end that we didn't get.”

Minnesota drops to 1-1. They will host San Jose State next week.
