"Tempering expectations has been the theme around the locker room the last two weeks. We beat Missouri, and that was all well and good. I think the guys did well in understanding that what we did was huge, but that we're capable of much more. We cannot get too high on ourselves. We had a full week off. We got healthier, and we got a lot better. Wagner is an FCS school, and we remember how that went against Central Connecticut State. This team is different. Another brick to lay. UMass goes full throttle, decimates Wagner in FCS matchup

Quarterback Taisun Phommachanh dominated and threw four touchdowns, running back C.J. Hester rattled off 136 yards on the ground and two scores, and wide receiver Jakobie Keeney-James picked up a hat-trick of touchdowns as UMass had their way with FCS foe Wagner to the tune of a 56-14 victory.

Keeney-James picked up his eighth touchdown of the season off of an 11-yard reception midway through the first quarter before Wagner quarterback Brock Ladler snuck in a tying touchdown in the dying seconds of the first. The Minutemen would take over from there, scoring 21 unanswered points to get to the fourth quarter.

“Building off the win against Missouri last game and having the bye week in between was certainly going to test our focus,” commented head coach Don Brown. “It’s easy to look past an opponent like Wagner, just because they play in a lower division. They have talent on their team, and they play with a lot of heart. We needed to play a good game of football, and I’m really proud of the guys for coming out here and doing just that.”

Four touchdowns were scored by UMass in the fourth quarter, including a link-up between backup freshman quarterback Ahmad Haston finding Keshawn Brown for a 19-yard touchdown to push the lead even further. Ladler would connect with wide receiver Noah Schwartz late in the fourth quarter to ease the sting of the beatdown.

“Ultimately, we pulled off everything we wanted to achieve in this game,” said offensive coordinator James Xavier in the team’s post-game press conference. “We took care of the football, executed where we needed to be executing, and we didn’t ease off the gas when we felt we had a comfortable lead. That’s huge.”

UMass rattled off their sixth win of the season and will look to get towards bowl eligibility when they take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs next week on the road. The Bulldogs are struggling so far this season, going 0-5 in SEC play so far this season.

"This is a team desperate to get some semblance of normalcy back after their season, admittedly, hasn't gone the way they wanted to. They have some talent in their defensive core. Namely, Brice Pollock at cornerback. He's going to try to check Jakobie [Keeney-James] as best as he can. I can tell you this, he's going to have his hands full. The weather isn't supposed to be the best, so our run game is going to have to be stout. We know the Bulldogs are famous for their defensive front, so that will be a challenge for us. We need to play tough and sound."
