Owls on the Prowl: Another dub for the good guys as Kennesaw State earns first FBS win under Bubba Mack
It was another slow start for the Kennesaw State Owls but by the end of the game, no one in the stands cared a bit as the Owls routed Arkansas State in what was undoubtedly their best performance of the season.

It was the perfect confidence boost for Kennesaw State as they head into conference play with the C-USA opener this week against MTSU. It was a dominant performance from the Owls that had head coach Bubba Mack in good spirits throughout his post-game interview with 107.5 The Fan.

  • The Good
A lot of the attention will go to Dexter Williams and with good reason, as he threw for four touchdowns and continues to impress in his first and lone season as an Owl. The defense, however, was the true catalyst in this major victory for this program and the coaching staff.

Jaylen Raynor, who is probably the second best quarterback the Owls will face all season, was never allowed to get comfortable in the pocket, completing just 53 percent of his passes and was sacked twice. When Raynor did scramble out of the pocket, he didn't cause much damage with his legs which was a concern coming into the game.

On third downs, which Coach Mack appropriately calls 'money downs', the Red Wolves converted just 35 percent of those third downs and on their lone fourth down attempt, late in the fourth quarter, they were unable to convert.

Just an all around great showing from the Owls defense, which has struggled at times this season.

  • The Bad
Speaking of money downs, the Owls weren't great offensively on third down either. The regression towards last season low average continues as they converted just 37 percent of those third downs. Coach Mack did provide some context which lessened the blow while also stating that this is an area they need to improve.

"We went four-for-four in the redzone with touchdowns so that helps," Mack said after the game, "You want to finish drives with [touchdowns] when you get that close so that's a good sign that we're an improving offense but overall, you want to be closer to [fifty percent conversion rate] when it comes to third and fourth down so we have work to do."

On the season, the Owls are dead last in the conference with a thirty-five percent conversion rate. Middle Tennessee, who the Owls play next, lead the conference with fifty percent.

  • The Bleep That Gets You Beat
Part of the reason for the third down struggles is the lack of a running game in the last few weeks.

Even in the win, top running back Coleman Bennett was held to less than three yards per carry for another week, continuing a troubling trend. It's not entirely on Bennett as the offensive line as a whole needs to get better. It's a relatively young unit that should get better as the season progresses but at some point, Dexter Williams II is going to need some help and if the running game isn't there, it could lead to blowouts and dissapointing outings in conference play.

Wake Forest turning up the heat for Jacksonville's Lynn Landolt
3-star quarterback Lynn Landolt out of Jacksonville, Florida is expected to take an official visit to Wake Forest this weekend with all indications pointing to Landolt, who had previously received Crystal Balls to commit to Kennesaw State, could be committing on his official visit.

Landolt, who is a top 75 player in the state of Florida, would be the highest rated high school quarterback to commit to the Owls. Kennesaw State had been working on scheduling a visit with Landolt but it never materialized, which opened the door for Wake Forest to make a final push for Landolt.

This is a high profile recruitment within Kennesaw State's football program with several coaches on staff taking part in trying to land Landolt so losing out on him to Wake Forest after being the favorite for so long would be a tough loss for a recruiting class that's still seeking its first commit.

alright you may beat 2-10 this year :rockclap:

Arkansas State is actually a solid team. They've got like 15 All-SBC players in year 2

this game is crazy bc FCS was a legit tougher game than this one. their offense is pretty stacked with 80 ovr at QB, RB (2 of them) and an 87 rate receiver but mid 60s to low 70s offensive line. Defensively, the secondary was suspect so the quick game was open all game as long as I didn't hang onto the ball as their DL was pretty legit

I've had success with other teams but with this OL, unless you make the first man miss, good luck picking up consistent yardage
