Chargers Gamble on Castonzo Already Paying Dividends
"You know the expression, 'life comes at you fast'? I was learning that the hard way, really quickly."

That's what was going through the mind of Will Castonzo as he sat in the back of a police car. He would spend the next few months reading headlines and watching video clips calling him some version of a spoiled, entitled rich white kid; something that Castonzo has in his Instagram bio until this day.

Nowadays, the headlines are about the undefeated Chargers, their electric quarterback and just how real are their Super Bowl chances.

"I think the expression of not having any regrets is sometimes overused," Castonzo said in a two-hour interview on the I AM ATHLETE podcast last week, "I do regret a lot of things, especially that night because I wasn't even supposed to be in the city, I was supposed to be back home, you know, my dad throws this huge Super Bowl party every year. I wasn't even supposed to be there that night and it could have cost me a whole lot more than it did."

The night in question was during last year's Super Bowl week where Castonzo was in town with his older brother and Las Vegas Raiders center, Brent along with a few college teammates. The plan was originally for the group to fly back on Thursday night but after media obligations and corporate events tied the younger Castanzo all up all week, Will decided to stay through the weekend while Brent flew back.

"It was a normal night," says Castonzo, "We were sort of bar hopping and then eventually got invited to this one night club and by the end of the night, it was just me and Big Will [Whitfield]. Once again, everyone else started going back to the hotel and yet here we were, two idiots just staying out and trying to keep the night alive. We get at the club and it's a bit of an older crowd and Will got into it with these guys, nothing big, just regular drunk, sweaty, crowded club stuff so I didn't think much of it."

According to Castonzo, nothing came of the encounter inside of the club. It wasn't until later in the evening -- or rather early morning -- when they were outside the club waiting on their Uber ride that they ran into those same guys from earlier in the night. This time, nearby police offers showed up to break up the verbal altercation. The police report alleges that Castonzo and Whitfield refused to vacate the premises but on the podcast, Castonzo describes the incident differently.

"We were waiting for our Ubers so why would we leave? Like I said, it wasn't anything crazy where the cops got called. The cops were already there and the media and the reports made it seem like it got out of control so the cops showed up. They were already there and when they told us to leave, I was explaining to them that we have our Uber drive on the way, we're leaving soon."

The police report then states that Castonzo and Whitfield eventually did leave the premises, only for Whitfield to stand in traffic and yell obscenities at the men he had gotten into the verbal altercation with, slowing up traffic. At that point, the officers went to apprehend Whitfield who they alleged resisted traffic. Once again, Castonzo's story differs.

"They were trying to cuff him," Castonzo says, "Like no warning, no nothing and they kept trying to cuff him behind his back but Whit [Whitfield] is a big dude and he had gotten shoulder surgery earlier that year so when they're trying to cuff him behind his back, he's not really resisting, he's just wincing like 'do it in the front' and they weren't listening so that's when I put my hands on them just to get their attention and obviously, it turned into something else."

Whitfield was charged with disorderly conduct, and Castonzo was charged with resisting or obstructing without violence. The charges would later be dropped but the damage was done as the rap on Castonzo, who had been suspended at Oklahoma before due to a failed drug test, was that he was a spoiled, entitled rich white kid, not a franchise quarterback.

Castonzo's combine invite was almost pulled if not for some begging and pleading only to spend those three days being dissected, poked and prodded by NFL teams as they dug up prior suspensions and detainments as a high school kid.

"It was pretty tough to be getting judged by people that never met you," Castonzo says, "The Chargers with [Stephon] White and coach [Brian] Flores, that's the only room where I felt like I was not being judged but rather heard so when they traded out of the number one pick, I was actually happy because I knew I wasn't going number one."

The Chargers would draft Castonzo with the fifteenth pick, becoming the first and only QB selected in the first round. After an open competition in camp, Castonzo would earn the starting job and now leads the NFL in passing touchdowns and third in both passer rating and rushing yards while leading the Chargers to a perfect 6-0 record.

The Castonzo selection came one year after the Chargers passed on quarterback Joseph Wentz who would go on to win Rookie of the Year with the New England Patriots. New England is now 1-5 with Wentz completing just 56 percent of his passes with just a 78.1 passer rating.

Things are looking just fine in Los Angeles.

Chargers Promote Former QB Rashaud Wheaton From Practice Squad
The Los Angeles Chargers have elevated practice squad QB Rashaud Wheaton from their practice squad and released wide receiver Will Fuller V.

Wheaton started twelve games last season for the Chargers, throwing fourteen touchdowns and rushing for 564 yards and three touchdowns. Wheaton will be the team's third quarterback with Marcus Mariota remaining the back up. When Will Castonzo got hurt in the Detroit game, Mariota was the only active quarterback on the roster left and the Wheaton signing can be seen as an insurance policy.

The release of Fuller was reported as a 'mutual decision' given that the veteran has yet to suit up this season for the Chargers as their seventh receiver on the depth chart. Wheaton does provide some positional flexibility as he lined up receiver during the early part of his tenure when Hal Sams was the starter and the team had injuries at wide out.

The Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos finished fourth and third, respectively, last season in the division. Almost halfway into this season, they now sit atop the division with the Chargers having a commanding three game lead over the Broncos.

Denver can make up some ground by using their ground game, pun intended, and slowing the game down against a high powered Chargers offense. Even without Derrick Henry, the Chargers lead the league in rushing by a wide margin with the next closest team, Carolina, having played an extra game and still having nearly 700 less rushing yards than the Chargers.

If the Broncos can jump out to an early lead or force the Chargers offense to be a one dimensional offense with their passing game, they might have a chance. If they allow one of the most balanced offense to be just that, the Chargers lead on the division will just keep growing.

Chargers Bounce Back From Lethargic First Half to Beat Broncos
An ineffective running game. A struggling offensive line. No Justin Jefferson and D.K. Metcalf neutralized.

For those that were calling Will Castonzo a glorified game manager, he put those claims to rest.

Castonzo accounted for 391 of the team's 409 yard of offense, including a back-breaker of a touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 22-yard touchdown run with nine minutes left that would help Los Angeles beat the Denver Broncos 30-20.

The Broncos had intercepted Castonzo twice in the first half and done a good job of pressuring the quarterback throughout the game. Starting in the second quarter, however, Castonzo started using his legs to extend plays as well as pick up first downs.

D'Eriq King showed up with plenty of fire power of his own, throwing for 215 yards and rushing for 89 yards on just five carries.
