Texas five-star safety Alex Longoria commits to SMU, class projected to be "program-changing"
By Cheryl Smith

DALLAS -- When you're the number one team in the country, momentum isn't just something you protect on Saturdays. It's something you weaponize on the recruiting trail.

SMY did exactly that this past week, landing a massive commitment from five-star free safety Alex Longoria, the number two safety in the country and the number 18 overall prospect in the ESPN300 prospects list out of Austin, Texas. Longoria arrives from Lake Travis High School, a powerhouse school in Austin fresh off a state championship, bringing with him a resume that screams readiness - and a ceiling that hints at dominance.

For head coach Nico Augustin, it's a program-defining addition.

"This is the type of player that changes what you can call defensively," SMU defensive coordinator Kerry Abraham said. "Alex sees the field like a veteran, and he hits like one too."

Longoria's commitment is especially intriguing given SMU's current situation in the secondary. The Mustangs already boast one of the best defensive backs in the country in Armani Medlock, the free safety who took over for reigning Jim Thorpe Trophy winner Jaylen Moses. Rather than creating hesitation, Medlock's presence became a selling point.

Sources around the program believe Longoria has a legitimate chance to play Day 1, whether in specialized packages or fully replacing Medlock.

"You don't recruit scared," Augustin said recently when asked about stacking elite talent. "You recruit to dominate."

Longoria fits that philosophy perfectly. At 6-foot-2 with elite closing speed and rare ball skills, he's known as much for his film study as his physicality - a trait that helped lead his high school to a state title and cement his status as one of the most polished defenders in the class.

The timing of the commitment only adds to the intrigue. Augustine's contract - as well as both offensive and defensive coordinators, Tony Sanchez and Kerry Abraham - expires at the end of the season, yet all signs point to SMU preparing a record-breaking extension to keep the architect of their rise in Dallas. Landing a prospect of Longoria's caliber sends a clear message: SMU isn't bracing for change - its building for sustained dominance.

And Longoria wasn't the only win.

The Mustangs also received verbal commitment from four-star wide receiver Hayden Presley, a dynamic playmaker out of Dallas, and three-star running back Tyree Duke from Mansfield, Texas, continuing a recruiting strategy centered on locking down elite in-state talent.

Presley brings speed and route-running polish to an offense already known for its explosiveness, while Duke's downfield style and vision project well at the next level, giving SMU another physical option in the backfield.

Even with those additions, the Mustangs aren't done.

SMU remains firmly in the hunt for marquee, five-star prospects, including wide receiver Kenyon Natson and cornerback Henry Malik, two players who could elevate an already championship-caliber roster into something bordering on unfair.

For now, though, the headline belongs to Longoria - a five-star defender choosing the nation's top team, in the heart of Texas, with eyes on immediate impact.

SMU isn't just winning games anymore.

They're winning the future.

Nice looking recruting board. A 5 star and a 4 star already wrapped up.

Cheese getting all the headlines but solid game from Kasay, is he the top target?

Really pleased with how the class is coming together so far. As for Kasay, he's definitely Mr. Reliable with some of the route concepts we throw out there. He definitely leads in receptions, I believe he's first in yardage, and then obviously Santiago Silvestro is our TDs leader. But, we spread the ball pretty evenly, or at least try to approach with balance.
