Stanford’s Bubba Mack downplays Oklahoma reunion ahead of Sugar Bowl semifinal
Michael Harrell
January 04, 2030, 07:58 AM ET

When Stanford head coach Bubba Mack took the podium at Sugar Bowl Media Day, the storyline wrote itself — the man who once wore crimson and cream now facing his alma mater with a shot at a national title on the line. But Mack wasn’t interested in nostalgia.
“I’ve got a lot of love for Oklahoma,” Mack said. “It’s an interesting story, sure. But it’s not an important one. Our focus is on Stanford and what we need to do to win this game.”
Mack, who was an offensive lineman for the Sooners in the early 1990s before being drafted by the Arizona Cardinals, has guided Stanford to its first College Football Playoff appearance behind a bruising ground attack and one of the nation’s most balanced defenses. The Cardinal (12–1) will meet Oklahoma in the CFP Semifinal at the Sugar Bowl, a matchup that pits Mack against the program where his football journey began.
Still, the Stanford coach made it clear that his emotional ties won’t factor into preparation.
“We’re not here for a reunion,” Mack said. “We’re here for a championship opportunity. The rest is just background noise. Anyone that I played with or for at OU is long gone by now so it's not really something that I'm focusing one.”
Mack also provided a significant roster update, confirming that senior running back Jamarice Wilder is “likely done for the season” due to lingering back and lower-body injuries. Wilder, a steady veteran presence and one of the team’s emotional leaders, missed the CFP Quarterfinals against SMU.
Even so, Mack expressed confidence in the backfield depth that has defined Stanford’s identity. The Cardinal produced three 1,000-yard rushers in back-to-back seasons, with Trumaine Lasike and Trent Parrish each surpassing the mark this fall alongside the injured Wilder.
“We hate it for Jamarice — he’s been the heartbeat of this room,” Mack said. “But Trumaine and Trent have been phenomenal. They’ve earned those touches. We trust all of them to keep us rolling.”

They roasted you in the air. You were leaning heavily on the CPU not stopping your run game at the end. Cheesy mf'er
