haven't landed any recruits yet, probably should have scheduled some visits against UCF
feels like us, Tulane and North Texas battling for the conference so this game is circled and underlined :lebronscream:

USF forces four turnovers, sacks Newton four times in win over Tulane

Tampa, Florida - Take the ball. Take the game.

South Florida turned turnovers into touchdowns and relentless pressure into control Saturday night at Raymond James Stadium, forcing four Tulane giveaways and sacking quarterback Jershaun Newton four times on the way to a 31–17 win over the Green Wave on September 23, 2028.

After a sluggish opening quarter, the Bulls flipped the game with a dominant second quarter that showcased exactly what head coach DJ Porter wants this team to be about: physical defense, opportunistic playmaking, and efficiency on offense.

Tulane struck first, as Shaun Nicholas hauled in a 19-yard touchdown pass from Newton midway through the opening quarter to give the Green Wave a 7–0 lead. But that would be the only moment of comfort for Tulane’s offense all night.

From there, the Bulls’ defense took over.

USF tied the game early in the second quarter when quarterback Locklan Hewlett capped a methodical drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. Moments later, Hewlett went back to the air, finding Jeremiah Stoneburner for a 6-yard score that gave USF its first lead.

Then came the defining moment of the night.

With Tulane driving late in the half, defensive back David Igbinoghene jumped a Newton pass and raced 95 yards the other way for a pick-six with just eight seconds remaining before halftime. The play sent the Bulls into the locker room up 21–7 and completely shifted the momentum of the game.

Tulane attempted to stabilize after halftime with a 33-yard field goal by P.J. Buggs early in the third quarter, trimming the deficit to 21–10. But every time the Green Wave looked for traction, the Bulls’ defense slammed the door.

USF’s front seven lived in Tulane’s backfield, holding the Green Wave to just 34 rushing yards on 20 carries (1.7 yards per rush) and consistently forcing Newton into uncomfortable situations. Newton finished the night 16-of-24 for 168 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions, while also being dropped four times for sacks.

The Bulls put the game away in the fourth quarter. Steven Snead punched in a 3-yard touchdown run to extend the lead, and Dom Bragg later added a 40-yard field goal to make it 31–10. Tulane managed a late 60-yard touchdown connection from Newton to Nicholas, but it proved little more than cosmetic.

Hewlett delivered a poised and efficient performance, completing 19 of 24 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown while adding a rushing score. Stoneburner and Jordyn Bridgewater served as reliable targets, combining for 13 receptions and 151 yards. On the ground, Elton York made the most of his opportunity and provided a spark with 54 yards on seven carries.

Defensively, USF was overwhelming. Jermaine Dalias (7 tackles, 3 TFL), Eric Rance (4 TFL), and Kevin Wynn (5 TFL, sack, forced fumble) led a unit that finished with nine total tackles for loss. Igbinoghene’s interception return touchdown highlighted a secondary that also saw Cameron Keys record two interceptions.

The numbers told the same story as the film. USF outgained Tulane 362–232 in total yards, averaged nearly two yards more per play, and finished plus-four in turnover margin. The Bulls also converted critical fourth downs and controlled the line of scrimmage for most of the night.

For Tulane, Nicholas was a bright spot, hauling in five catches for 101 yards and both Green Wave touchdowns. But with the running game neutralized and constant pressure collapsing the pocket, the Green Wave never found a consistent rhythm.

Tulane did have a late moment of hope, recovering their onside kick after Nicholas' final touchdown, but it was Keys slamming the door with another pick to end the threat.

When it was over, the message was clear.

Take the ball. Take the game.

On Saturday night in Tampa, the Bulls did both.

USF POSTGAME REPORT

USF 31 – Tulane 17

Offense
–USF controlled the game after a slow start, using balance, efficiency, and field position to pull away from Tulane for a 31–17 win at Raymond James Stadium. After falling behind early, the Bulls scored on five of their next seven possessions and never relinquished control.
–Quarterback Locklan Hewlett delivered a composed, efficient performance, completing 19 of 24 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown while adding a short rushing score. Hewlett protected the football, converted key third and fourth downs, and consistently put USF in manageable situations.
–The rushing attack was spread across multiple contributors, with Elton York leading the way at 54 yards on seven carries. Steven Snead added a critical 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to extend the Bulls’ lead and put the game out of reach.
–Jeremiah Stoneburner was Hewlett’s most reliable target, finishing with six receptions for 77 yards and a touchdown, while Jordyn Bridgewater added seven catches for 74 yards to keep the chains moving.
–USF finished with 19 first downs, averaged 5.9 yards per play, and held a decisive advantage in time of possession by sustaining drives and limiting Tulane’s offensive opportunities.
-“We stayed patient on offense and trusted the process,” Head Coach DJ Porter said. “Once we settled in, we were able to control the tempo and play our game.”

Defense
–USF’s defense was the defining unit of the night, forcing four turnovers and sacking Tulane quarterback Jershaun Newton four times. Newton was hurried on several other pass attempts, including two of the three interceptions. The Bulls repeatedly flipped field position and turned pressure into points.
–David Igbinoghene delivered the game’s turning point with a 95-yard interception return for a touchdown just before halftime, giving USF a commanding 21–7 lead. Igbinoghene would also force a fumble in the second half.
–Cameron Keys recorded two interceptions, while Kevin Wynn added a sack, five tackles for loss, and a fumble recovery as the Bulls overwhelmed Tulane at the line of scrimmage.
–USF held Tulane to just 34 rushing yards on 20 carries and limited the Green Wave to 4.6 yards per play overall.
–Despite allowing two long touchdown passes to Shaun Nicholas, the Bulls consistently answered with stops and prevented Tulane from sustaining drives.
–USF finished plus-four in turnover margin, a decisive factor in the outcome.

Special Teams
–Kicker Dom Bragg converted four extra points and added a 40-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to extend USF’s lead. He did miss on a mid range field goal, striking the left upright.
–Punter Dorian McSurdy was called upon just once, delivering a 48-yard punt that helped flip field position.
–Elton York and Lyle Dragos combined for 39 kick return yards, while York added 15 punt return yards without a turnover.
