That game against UTSA was a lot closer than we thought. Nice job taking them down and North Texas as well. The Mean Green are much tougher these days.
Yeah we played with our food too much against UTSA. Defense was poor. Fortunately when the offense was down against UNT the defense picked them up. Would like to see some more convincing wins down the stretch for sure.

Looks like the weather made that game closer than it should have been but a good win to keep moving on.

PLAYING WITH THEIR FOOD
USF needs last second field goal to get past Tulsa

Saturday October 21, 2028 | 7:30 PM | Raymond James Stadium | Tampa, Florida

Tampa, Florida - It wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t clean, and it certainly wasn’t comfortable, but for the eighth straight game, USF found a way.

Needing a last-second field goal from freshman kicker Dom Bragg, the No. 12 Bulls escaped with a 17–14 win over Tulsa on Saturday night, a game that felt far tighter than the talent gap on paper and served as a reminder that even undefeated teams can flirt with danger if they lose their edge.

USF struck first through the air, with Locklan Hewlett uncorking a 57-yard strike to Jeremiah Stoneburner early in the second quarter, but the Bulls spent much of the night leaving points on the field. Despite averaging 7.8 yards per play and consistently moving the ball, USF leaned heavily on Hewlett’s arm and struggled to finish drives, particularly inside the red zone.

That imbalance wasn’t lost on head coach DJ Porter after the game.

“We should have run the ball more,” Porter admitted. “That’s on me. I’ve got to be a more consistent play caller. We were moving it, but we didn’t always put ourselves in the best situations to close drives.”

Tulsa, meanwhile, hung around by sheer persistence. Quarterback Andrew Alford completed 32 of 37 passes, repeatedly testing USF’s defense underneath and refusing to let the game slip away. The Golden Hurricane managed just one yard rushing as a team, but their passing rhythm kept pressure on the Bulls throughout the night.

The turning point appeared to come in the third quarter, when both teams made aggressive, and ultimately costly, decisions. USF faced fourth-and-goal and opted to go for it, coming up empty. Tulsa followed suit on its next opportunity inside the five, also walking away without points. The missed chances loomed large in a game where every possession mattered.

Tulsa finally broke through late in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 14–14 on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Alford to Donnell Gee Jr. with just over a minute remaining. Momentum had swung, the crowd grew tense, and for the first time all night, USF looked genuinely vulnerable.

That’s when Hewlett took over.

Calm and methodical, the junior quarterback engineered a composed final drive, leaning on Stoneburner and Jordyn Bridgewater to move the chains and working the sideline to conserve time. A critical completion put USF into field-goal range, and Porter entrusted the moment to his freshman kicker.

With one second left, Dom Bragg drilled a 21-yard field goal straight through the uprights, sealing the win and sending Raymond James Stadium into relief more than celebration.

“That’s a tough kick for a young guy,” Porter said. “But Dom’s earned our trust. Locklan put us in position, and Dom finished it.”

Statistically, the Bulls outgained Tulsa 457–331 and held a significant edge in yards per play, but the numbers told a story of inefficiency as much as control. USF failed on its lone fourth-down attempt, lost a fumble, and converted just 50 percent of its third downs, enough to survive, not enough to dominate.

Defensively, USF leaned on its front seven to keep the Golden Hurricane from ever taking the lead. Eric Rance recorded 14 tackles and three tackles for loss, while Jathan Hatch, Jermaine Dalias, and Kevin Wynn consistently disrupted the pocket. Cameron Keys’ endzone interception proved critical in preventing Tulsa from capitalizing earlier in the game.

For Tulsa, the loss was another example of how thin the margin can be. The Golden Hurricane matched USF in first downs, played clean football, and defended well enough to give themselves a chance but couldn’t get out of their own way on the ground or finish enough drives.

USF remains unbeaten, but the message from the locker room was clear: the standard has to be higher.

“Wins like this teach you things,” Porter said. “We’re 8–0, but that doesn’t mean we’ve arrived. If we want to keep going where we’re trying to go, we’ve got to be sharper and that starts with me.”

For now, though, the Bulls will take the escape, take the lesson, and move on, still perfect, even if far from flawless.
