Chargers Defense Makes Late Stand to Preserve Win over Saints
When the stakes were a bit bigger back in the Super Bowl, the Los Angeles Chargers were able to eventually find an answer for Justin Fields' legs. When it got to winning time this Sunday, they did just that once more.
Fields' 351 yards passing weren't enough as a late touchdown helped make the score respectable in the New Orleans Saints 34-24 loss to the Chargers on Sunday.
Fields had rushed for 68 yards after using his arm early in the game to set the tone. The Chargers had just scored on a screen pass to Jaron Medlock which was ruled a lateral to extend their lead to ten. With 5:59 left in the game and the ball on the Chargers' 46-yard line, the Saints offense chose to go for it n 4th and 7. Fields tried to scramble out of the pocket has he had done on the previous set of downs, converting a 3rd and seven with his legs.
This time around, the Chargers had both linebackers Layne Scott and DeAnde Bridge spying Fields with Fields being sacked by Bridge when he tried to scramble.
The Saints defense also improved after Will Castonzo threw for 134 yards in the first half. He finished with 212 yards but was very efficient, competing 73 percent of his passes along with two touchdowns, no turnovers and 70 yards rushing.

Los Angeles, Rashard Keaton 'miles apart' as Negotiations Halt
The Los Angeles Chargers and former number one overall pick edge rusher Rashard Keaton are 'miles apart' when it comes to expectations for his extension as first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter.
In the report, Schefter detailed how the current front office does not view as Keaton as an elite talent and notes how they weren't the ones that selected him with the first pick of the draft. Keaton is reportedly looking for an extension in the $13 million range per year.
In his three seasons, Keaton has yet to record over ten sacks, posting back to back seven sack seasons in his last two seasons after sparingly playing as a rookie. By comparison, Tampa Bay's Harmon Booth was selected four picks later in the same draft and had 12.5 sacks last season. Tennessee's Derrick Pope was selected one pick later and had ten sacks last season with both of them having yet to sign their extensions.
Depending on where Booth and Pope come in number wise could dictate the ceiling for Keaton, at least the ceiling for what the Chargers are willing to pay for him. At this moment, a source close to the situation said that the team currently isn't willing to give Keaton an extension larger than the one the Toronto Huskies gave edge rusher Nolan Garrison. At the peak of his deal, Garrison made $8.81 million.
The Garrison comparison is of note considering that current Chargers GM Stephon White was in the Huskies' front office when they signed Garrison to that extension.

The Indianapolis Colts went out and straight up won free agency with the additions of Tyreek Hill and Edwin Rankin, who many pegged as the top available free agents this past offseason. They then used the first overall pick in the draft on pass rusher Robert Cottrell who has helped the Colts field a top five defense through the first three games of the season.
Sam Ehlinger might not be in the MVP form of his 2026 season as his passer rating is a career low 89.0 right now but the team around him is good enough to challenge the Los Angeles Chargers. The Colts beat up on the Chargers in the preseason, for what it's worth, and could provide some problems for a Chargers defense that hasn't been stout against the run.
D'Andre Swift is averaging 74.3 yards per game but the Chargers rushing defense is in the bottom half of the league. Even without two key offensive linemen, the addition of Rankin should allow the Colts to be able to establish the ground game with the combination of Rankin and Quenton Nelson.
Defensively, the Colts will be challenged at the second level. The Chargers once again feature the league's best rushing offense and with a limited secondary, there are plays to be made.

Castonzo Has Career Day in Blowout Win over Indianapolis Colts
Any claims that Will Castonzo is just a game manager with swag and a few highlight reel runs were seemingly put to rest on Sunday.
The former first round pick threw for five touchdowns and 382 yards in the Los Angeles Chargers 44-14 win over the Indianapolis Colts.
Castonzo had over 200 yards passing in the first half following a 65-yard strike to D.K. Metcalf right before the end of the half. His high completion percentage on the season will improve following a 74 percent day despite averaging 10.9 yards per attempt.
Metcalf caught four passes for 113 yards and a touchdown while running back Tyron Floyd was second on the team with 78 yards receiving. Odell Beckham Jr. caught his first touchdown as a Charger.
The Chargers offense also rushed for 207 yards with 140 coming from Felix Whittaker and Derrick Henry adding 48 for good measure.
