Statement from James Xavier, Head Football Coach

First of all, I would like to extend my gratitude for the unwavering support that has flooded in not just from the Charlottesville community, but the entire football world. It proves that no matter what happens in between the sidelines, it was - and will always be - bigger than just a game.

I want to express my condolences to the other three families who are suffering from a loved one who didn’t make it home that night. Though the media attention will undoubtedly focus on my family and our grief, please understand that my thoughts and prayers are with you, just as I’m sure yours are with me.

Savannah was the backbone of our family. We have two young kids - Thomas and Charlotte - who worship the ground she walked. Knowing they will have to lead their lives without her grace and presence shatters me in more ways than I can imagine. She was always the battery pack of our family - able to make us move even when the world told us we couldn’t. She’s been the love of my life from as far as I can remember.

She was there when I tore my knee up as an athlete at the University of Michigan. She was the one who convinced me to take the job as head coach at Venice back in the day. She made the call to join UMass when I thought we should just settle down in Florida. She pushed me to bet on myself and come to Charlottesville.

As per usual, my wife was always right.

Everyone keeps referring to me with such reverence. Such greatness. “The Professor” is one that I hear often. And though I am flattered, she was the lifeline that made all of this possible. Staying up endless nights listening to me go crazy about offensive schemes and formations. She never grew tired. She never wanted me to turn it off.

None of this goes without her. And until further notice, it won’t.

I can’t, in good conscience, commit to coaching at the University of Virginia. This team: the men who commit their livelihoods, and their futures to me, their families and support systems that put their faith in me to take care of their finest treasure, the school and faculty that depend on me and mine to take care of business. It’s too much to risk not being able to give my all. They deserve my everything, and mine was lost to senseless violence a week ago.

Offensive coordinator Slade Nagle will be my successor. He will work in tandem with defensive coordinator Brandon Fisher. They will rely on their staff to cover my departure, and they will be successful without a doubt in my mind.

This isn’t goodbye forever. I know my wife would be hitting me in the back of the head for doing this. “Time moves on and so should you” I can hear her saying even now. But, she also always encouraged me to rest. And that’s what I’m doing.

Charlottesville, you’ll always have my best. And until I can give it to you again, I’ll be here.

Love and peace,

James Xavier

Author's Note,

Just want to express gratitude to all of those who have followed the journey of Coach James Xavier through the few seasons I managed to eek out in this. Unfortunately, I got onto the cycle a little late, and wasn't able to pump out more seasons. Things were definitely getting juicy with this game, and losing the National title left things feeling unresolved.

But, it's time to move onto bigger and better things. CFB 26 has arrived, the post-release patch is here, and my next project is just about ready to come.

I hope y'all enjoyed as much as I did. :blessed:
