Despite running through the Eastern Conference, the Pens stumbled to the finish line. They dropped two of their last three games.

State of the IceBurgh : Do Penguins have enough juice for one more Cup run?

PITTSBURGH, PS -- - For a team that had limited expectations at the beginning of the 2024-25 NHL season, the Pittsburgh Penguins showed that they had one more in them. They put together a team with players thought to be past their prime. With young players who were still too green. With players that were on their roster because there just wasn't a spot for them on their previous teams.

Boy, did they prove them wrong.

Captain and superstar Sidney Crosby led the team in scoring, coming shockingly close to surpassing the 50-goal plateau with a late scoring surge. One could easily forget that the former first overall pick turns 38-years-old this summer thanks to a 109-point-season that lands him fourth in the league in scoring, just behind the likes of Mikko Rantanen, Nathan MacKinnon, and Auston Matthews - all young, bright stars in today's NHL.

It is also worth pointing out that he finally broke his tie with Great One, Wayne Gretzky, for the most point-per-game seasons in NHL history, managing to score his 109 points despite missing two games early in the season. A far cry from his more injury-riddled past, Crosby managed well over 75 games once again, showing his new-found durability that could have aided him during his more productive seasons where he was the de facto face of the league.

Crosby paced the NHL all season long with his impressive offensive prowess and ability within the faceoff dot. His production was only magnified when he was given two bright stars on his wings - Brock Boeser from the Vancouver Canucks and Trevor Zegras from the Anaheim Ducks.

"I think Sid was able to reach new heights when he got those guys on his wing," commented Penguins insider Josh Yohe. "a right-handed shot like Boeser who has no problem shooting the puck and a guy who's not afraid to mix it up and get in the messy areas like Zegras reminds me of the good 'ol days when the Pens used to have guys like Pascal Dupuis and Chris Kunitz. They won Stanley Cups back in those days. It feels like they can do it again now."

Enjoying a nice resurgence is fellow superstar Evgeni Malkin, who was one goal away from a 40-goal season and enjoyed spurts where he was among the league's more productive. An 81-point season was buoyed by his chemistry with rookie Rutger McGroarty, potting the first 20-goal season from a rookie since Malkin and former Pens star Jordan Staal managed all the way back in the 2006-07 season.

The team enjoyed 20+ goal seasons from Crosby, Malkin, McGroarty, Boeser, Bryan Rust, and defenseman Erik Karlsson, who really started to pour it on in the second-half of the season after returning from leading Sweden to a championship at the 4Nations tournament. Rickard Rakell (18 goals) came close as well as newcomer, Boone Jenner, who 19 goals himself.

John Gibson found his way after stumbling out the game when he returned to his hometown of Pittsburgh after a deadline trade from the Anaheim Ducks, but looks to have found stability as he gets his first real crack at the playoffs behind a competent team after floundering behind the rebuilding Ducks for many seasons of his prime.

The team is hoping to get production from their depth, namely Philip Tomasino, Emil Bemstrom, and Ville Koivunen, who is expected to make his playoff debut as the Pittsburgh Penguins match up against long-time rival Washington Capitals, featuring the new all-time goals leader in Alex Ovechkin. The Capitals managed to sneak in on the last day of the season thanks to a 6-0 demolishing of the Penguins in Pittsburgh.

Bro, they are Gods in this game. That Game 3 was atrocious. Just slowly slipped away and then I noticed "oh shit, there's two minutes left."
