The Victory Lap: Bubba Mack and the CFP Committee agree on Stanford's 'ugly win', Alex Rowe's struggles and recruiting news

Stanford head coach Bubba Mack was adamant on Saturday night after Stanford's two point win over Wake Forest that his team wouldn't be apologizing for a win despite almost losing as a twenty point favorite. The College Football Playoff Committee appears to agree with Mack, moving Stanford up one spot in the latest ranking to sixth as LSU fell outside the top three with their loss to Texas.

The Cardinal didn't look like one of the best teams in the country against Wake but the rally did show resolve and the potential the team has to be a really good football team.

"Obviously there's stuff we need to work on and that's the case in a two point or twenty point win," Mack said, "But I'm not going to sit up here and apologize for a win and neither should our players. You got out there, strap it up and try to win football games and we shouldn't take that for granted even if it's an ugly win or not by as much as some people wanted or thought we would win."

Stanford plays NC State this week, who also beat Wake Forest by two points.

Richard Wiley backs Alex Rowe following 3 INT performance
Alex Rowe probably had his worst game as a Stanford Cardinal against Wake, throwing three interceptions and nearly costing the Cardinal a chance at the ACC Championship Game and by extension, the playoffs.

After the game, offensive coordinator Richard Wiley said that many of Rowe's mistakes are correctable while also taking some ownership on the play calling.

"A lot goes into a game and I don't know that we as a staff, me specifically as the play caller, put [Rowe] in the best situation to be successful," Wiley said when speaking to the media on Monday, "He made some mistakes and some things we need to clean up but it wouldn't be fair to just put the blame on him. He did some things really well and he did some things that need to improve but overall, we feel great about him."

Behind Rowe are four true freshmen in LaMarcus Hook, Erik Weston, Tevita Luck and D.J. Sapp with Weston as the official backup. On Saturday night, Mack said that such thing would factor in a decision to make a change at the position but reiterated that Rowe is the unquestioned starter.

Malik Marshall leaves The Farm without a commitment
Five-star running back Malik Marshall was on campus this past weekend to see Stanford beat Wake Forest and while it was an exciting game, it might not have been the dominant performance that many expected. Marshall told 247Sports that he enjoyed his visit and that Stanford remains in his top three along with Notre Dame and Penn State where he'll be visiting South Bend next week and College Park in three weeks.

While news of Marshall's visit could be seen as a positive, the fact the left without committing and still intends on visiting the Irish and the Nittany Lion could be an indication that this is yet an another recruitment that Mack and staff have been unable to see across the finish line.

As it stands today, Stanford has one commit in their class and have the 130th ranked recruiting class in the country. The only P4 team below them is Duke at 131 with one recruit as well.

Record: 4-5, 1-5 ACC
Head Coach: Kalen DeBoer
Offensive Scheme: Multiple
Defensive Scheme: 4-2-5

Team Schedule
vs. Charlotte (5-4): W 37-23
at South Carolina (1-8): W 38-23
vs. FCS: W 45-10
vs. Clemson (5-4): L 59-17
at #14 Duke (7-2): L 31-14
vs. Wake Forest (5-5): W 21-19
vs. #13 Pittsburgh (8-2): L 41-17
at Boston College (5-5): L 35-10
at Louisville (5-4): L 24-19

Team Leaders
Passing: Danny Hartley 56 cmp%, 2599 yards, 15 TD, 11 INT, 130.9 passer rating
Rushing: Aries Pounds 533 yards, 4.2 ypc, 6 TD
Receiving: Jon Grymes 55 receptions, 802 yards, 4 TD
Defense: John Kahari 61 tackles, 2 TFL, 4 INT

Injuries

Image DT Shaquille Pullard (Sophomore) Abdominal Tear (Out)
Image RT Joel McDonald (Junior) Foot Fracture (Out)
Image WR Steven Meeks (Sophomore) Broken Tailbone (Season)
Image DT Brett Haslam (Junior) Dislocated Hip (Out)

Players to Watch
Image QB Danny Hartley (R-Jr) | 6′3", 204LBS | 83 OVR, 80 SPD, 82 ACC, 76 AWR, 91 THP, 78 SAC, 82 MAC, 85 DAC
Hartley looked like one of the best quarterbacks in the country earlier on with a four touchdown, 416-yard performance against South Carolina and even in the loss against Clemson, he put up 300+ yards and two touchdowns. Since then, he's thrown an interception in all but one game (Wake Forest) and has thrown three interceptions against Duke and Louisville.

Image C Diego Karim (Fr) | 6′4", 297LBS | 68 OVR, 87 STR, 70 PBK, 73 RBK
Wake was able to neutralize Stanford's pass rush when only bringing four which allow Lynn Landolt time in the pocket to make some great second level throws. NC State's offensive line isn't as good with a redshirt freshman backup starting at right tackle and Karim, a true freshman, at center.

Image DB John Kahari (R-Soph) | 5'10", 189LBS | 75 OVR, 89 SPD, 93 ACC, 73 MCV, 70 ZCV, 69 TKL
Kahari lines up everywhere for the Wolfpack from cornerback, safety to nickel. He's mostly played nickel this season for the Wolfpack and he's had some success against the passing game with four interceptions. However, in the running game, he can be attacked and struggles to get off blocks.

Marshall would be a great get but if he's going to visit Notre Dame, you are in trouble.

Stanford to cover the spread and the over.

Another strong fourth quarter pushes Stanford past North Carolina State
When the game hung in the balance and their offense was struggling to move the ball, Stanford had a simple plan: give the ball to our best players.

Tyrone Nicks scored two touchdowns and Trumaine Lasike had the dagger as Stanford survived a scare for a second consecutive week, needing twenty points in the fourth quarter to beat North Carolina State 32-24.

Lasike had been limited throughout the game with an hip injury as the Cardinal offense struggled, scoring just twelve points in the first half with two of them coming from a safety when North Carolina State took the 17-12 lead in the third quarter.

Stanford would respod with their best drive with Lasike picking up seventeen yards on the second play followed by a nine-yard completion to Nicks and then six plays later, a fifteen-yard rush by Lasike on third and seven to keep the drive alive. It would be punctuated with a fake handoff to Lasike and a toss to Nicks who went into the endzone untouched to retake the lead.

The Wolfpack would go three-and-out, taking just twenty four seconds off the clock and on the first play, Alex Rowe found Nicks again, this time for a 41-yard catch and run to take the eight point lead with ten minutes left.

Stanford's defense would force the turnover on downs on the next possession as linebacker Manu Toomer would stop Aries Pounds behind the line of scrimmage on fourth and three, his seventh tackle for loss in the game.

I would have lost with you not covering the spread anyways.

Giving the ball to your best player should always be the plan but coaches like to overthink things.
