WEEK 9

Washington State coming off a 63 point performance in Week 8 @ Cal returned home for what many thought would be a offensive fireworks display as the Cougars hosted (5-3) UTSA.

The Roadrunners 2nd in pretty much every offensive category in the the Pac-12 came out on fire taking a scoring quickly on the opening drive and then after recovering a Brevin Doll fumble extended the lead to (14-0) just 3 minutes into the game. Washington State though would bounce back scoring 28 unanswered points to close out the half as Malachi Nelson throws for 3 TD's (15 yd to L. Creer, 35 yd and 14 yd to C. Pabst) and ran for another (28 yds) as the Cougars taking a (28-14) lead into the locker room.

Nelson would open up the 2nd half with the biggest play of the game as he hits Dazmin James on a 59 yd bomb to extend the lead to (35-14) just just the 3rd play of the 2nd half. UTSA would answer back with a big play of their own as SR QB Brandon Tennison scrambles and goes 41 yds to the house to make it (35-21).. UTSA would force a WSU punt but had to settle for a 30 yd FG making it (35-24) with 5 minutes to play in the 3rd. WSU would answer back though as RS SO Landon Wright catches his first career touchdown as he hauls in a 24 yd strike from Nelson as WSU extends the lead to (42-24).

Still (42-24) going into the 4th, WSU showed no signs of taking their foot off the gas pedal as they score 4 more times on the ground including a 24 yd touchdown run by Antonio Abbott, 23 yd run by Doll and a 11 yd run by Leo Pulalsi, as WSU goes over 200 yds (243) on the ground and over 700 yds of Total Offense (717) on the day, setting a new season high point total.

UTSA would manage to score 2 more times as Tennison finishes the day with 331 yds and 2 TD's through the air and 67 yds and 1 TD on the ground in the loss..

WEEK 10 TOP-25 RANKINGS
With the arrival of Week 10 we move away from the Top-25 Media/Coaches Poll and move to the CFP Top-25 and will take a look at the first projected Playoff Bracket..

TOP-25
#1 (8-0) Alabama
#2 (8-0) Michigan
#3 (8-0) LSU
#4 (7-1) Oregon
#5 (8-0) BYU
#6 (7-1) Ole Miss
#7 (7-1) Georgia
#8 (7-2) Texas A&M
#9 (7-1) UCLA
#10 (6-2) Miami
#11 (7-1) UNC
#12 (7-2) Notre Dame
#13 (7-1) Boston College
#14 (6-2) Penn State
#15 (5-3) Florida
#16 (7-1) Stanford
#17 (8-0) Arkansas State
#18 (7-2) Clemson
#19 (6-2) Duke
#20 (6-2) Nebraska
#21 (7-1) Kentucky
#22 (5-3) Ohio State
#23 (6-2) Boise State
#24 (6-2) Iowa State
#25 (7-1 Houston

-5 teams remain perfect going into Week 10 including BYU who finished a perfect 12-0 last year.. However 3 of those teams face fellow Top-25 opponents in Week 10 as #2Michigan takes on #20 Nebraska, #3 LSU plays @ #15 Florida, and #5 BYU who will take on #24 Iowa State.

-Florida is in must win mode but with LSU this coming week and #1 Alabama in Week 12 is going to be pretty tough as they look to keep their playoff hopes alive.

-Ohio State joins them with 3 loss's on the year and like Florida their Week 13 matching with Michigan could leave the Buckeyes out of the playoffs for a 2nd straight season leaving many to wonder if HC Ryan Day will stick around or finally bolt for the NFL.

-Boise State's shocking (28-22) loss to Colorado State likely ended the Broncos playoff hopes and potentially their chance at even playing in the Pac-12 title game. The Broncos however are still favored to win their final 4 games and a 10 win season should still be considered a success for 1st year HC Shane Beamer.

-Arkansas State's 8-0 start under HC Jeff Lebby has Red Wolves fan's thinking MWC title and a spot in the CFP., however don't discount their Week 12 matchup @ (7-1) Tulsa who is waiting just outside the Top-25 waiting to play spoiler.

PROJECTED BRACKET

#12 STANFORD (Pac-12 Champ) vs #5 BYU (Big 12 Champ) vs #4 Oregon (At-Large Top-4 seed)

#9 UCLA vs #8 TAMU vs #1 Alabama (SEC Champ)

#11 UNC vs #6 Ole Miss vs #3 LSU (At-Large Top-4 seed)

#10 Miami (ACC Champ) vs #7 Georgia vs #2 Michigan (Big Ten Champ)

Nelson is feeling it. We got a big game coming up against Stanford, which looks like it could be a preview of the Pac-12 title game now that BSU has a 2nd Pac-12 loss.

That's the plan. However I can't get to excited.. I have looked forward into the Crystal Ball and our QB room is going to look very different next year with Nelson gone. Sheppard right now has the highest level of players at risk to leave in the Portal. Provo has talent but a completely different style of player as a pocket passer who doesn't run well.

WEEK 10 RECAP

The Washington Cougars improved to 8-2 Overall and 6-1 in Pac-12 play moving 1 step closer to locking in a spot in the Pac-12 Championship with a Week 10 win over Oregon State winning the Northwest Cup in the process.

Washington State's offense continues to dominate and dazzle as the Cougars score 41 first half points to take a (41-3) lead into the locker room as Malachi Nelson throws 3 touchdowns and rushes for another as the former #1 high school recruit has finally has he nation taking notice as his Heisman campaign heats up.

For Nelson it was his 3rd straight week with a 20+ yard rushing touchdown and his 5th of the season as he now has 361 yds to go with his 5 scores. It was also Nelson's 3rd straight game without a INT well throwing for over 400 yds on 53 attempts.

Despite the 39 point lead, Nelson would start the 2nd half under center, but after guiding the Cougars inside the redzone, Nelson was forced from the game with what later was reported as a sprained ankle. Backup Ajani Sheppard would appear for just 1 play as he takes the handoff and scrambles to his right before taking off for the 14 yd score as WSU extends their lead to (48-3).

Oregon State would battle back in the 2nd half as they score 20 points in the final 18 minutes of the game as SR Q B Jaxon Smokik (75) throws a pair of touchdowns Smokik would finish the day 28/58 (48%) for 356 yds

Still with a game to play before burning his redshirt, Coach Kirby Moore decided to roll with True Freshman Johnathan Provo for the Cougars final 18 minutes of the game.. Provo's play came with mixed results as he threw a INT on his opening series that led to a OSU FG,, WSU also had 3 drives stall resulting in 40+ yd FG attempts by Adlai Lounsbury who missed all 3 after going 2/2 in the 1st half before Provo finally finds SO Landon Wright for a 12 yd touchdown for the final score of the game.
