Making of a Championship: Revisiting's Miami's battles with Georgia on the recruiting trail
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports Miami Insider

The last time the Miami Hurricanes played the Georgia Bulldogs, it was in the 2027 Orange Bowl in the first round of the College Football Playoffs where the Bulldogs would hang the Hurricanes their first loss of the season and ushered in the Keke Hagg experience with Emory Williams playing his last game as Miami's quarterback. The stars of that game? Quarterback Jaden Rashada -- who was committed to the Hurricanes at one point -- and safety Joenel Aguero sealed the 38-30 win with an interception, another player that was Miami was involved in their recruitment.

Recruiting is the lifeblood of college football, whether at the portal or the high school level and two of the nation's top programs -- Miami and Georgia -- have met on that battlefield plenty of times leading to their SEC Championship Game this Saturday. Here's a look at how some of those battles went into shaping their roster:

2026 4-star G Paul Bach [LG #1]: 6'2", 291lbs | Tallahassee, FL Image
An early win for the Hurricanes who went into FSU's territory and didn't need to beat out their rival Noles for the top ranked guard in the country but instead Georgia, who is closer to Bach's hometown than Miami is. Bach hasn't exactly lived up to expectations, playing in only four games in his career and was the starter for the Auburn game, where he struggled, and was benched in favor of Jalen Browning, an FSU transfer, who has started every game since.

It's hard to criticize Miami pursuing after the top ranked guard in the country but in hindsight, the industry was wrong on this evaluation and so was the Hurricanes.

2027 5-star WR Prince Egboh [WR #3]: 6'3", 194lbs | Miami, FL Image
This one stung at the at the time for Miami and continues to sting, even though the Hurricanes landed Davon Momah in the class before that and Max North in the class after that, both of which have outperformed Egboh who was one of the best players in the state of Florida that cycle and in Miami's own backyard.

This was a bold recruitment by Georgia as the Hurricanes were really starting to gather some steam and at one point looked like they were going to land Egboh's commitment but Georgia kept pressing and eventually signed him. While the South Florida native did not play in his first two seasons much, he broke through last year with a 1,000-yard season and ten touchdowns and is on pace to do that this year as well with nine touchdowns and needing 160 more yards to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark.

2027 4-star T Enrique Sendejo [LT #4]: 6'6", 307lbs | Fort Lauderdale, FL Image
You might be able to beat out Mario Cristobal on the trail for a blue-chip receiver in his backyard but when it comes to the line of scrimmage, Cristobal and offensive line coach Alex Mirabal have built a wall around South Florida when it comes to top-tier offensive linemen.

Similar to Bach, however, this evaluation was a miss as Sendejo has only played a handful of snaps for Miami, all on special teams.

2027 4-star T Alex Kenyon [LT #2]: 6'7", 294lbs | Venice, FL Image
You need to break a few eggs to make an omelet and you need to swing if you're going to hit in recruiting, especially on the offensive line. Another swing and miss for Miami here who fought off Florida State, Alabama, Georgia and Florida for this highly contested recruiting battle for a player that has played in a total of eleven games, all on special teams.

Kenyon and Sendejo each have a year of eligibility remaining so if they return next season, they could challenge for a starting spot with starting left tackle Darrius Keyes set to graduate.

2027 4-star LB Eric Dixon [LOLB #5]: 6'4", 233lbs | Tampa, FL Image
Probably the most debatable evaluation so far has to be Dixon as the first three 'wins' for Miami weren't really wins as none of those players turned into impact player and the one player that Georgia has landed so far, is the best one by far.

Dixon is far from an All-American but he has played his role, a run stopping linebacker, to a tee. A situational player, he's played at least 150 snaps in the last two seasons and has played in all twelve games this season, recording thirty-two tackles and nine tackles for loss along with an interception, pass breakup and forced fumble. This was a good take for Miami as they had a role in mind for Dixon and he's played it perfectly.

2028 5-star DT Timmy Provo [DT #5]: 6'2", 303lbs | Orlando, FL Image
Another five-star snag for the Bulldogs from the state of Florida, this time three hours north of Miami's campus in the Orlando area. It's hard to call Provo a bad take but the evaluation didn't quite live up to the five-star billing, playing just fourteen snaps in his redshirt freshman year before seeing an elevation in role last year with 258 snaps and has played 448 snaps this season as a rotational player at defensive tackle.

Defensive tackle is an expensive position in the NIL area and when you pony up for a five-star defensive tackle, you expect more than five tackles for loss in their career. This is Georgia's first miss but it's not as bad as Miami's misses (so far) as Provo is a starter level player for them at least.

2028 5-star WR Etinosa Ha [WR #3]: 6'3", 195lbs | Deland, FL Image
Miami continues their Samoa pipeline with the signing of Etinosa Ha, a five-star that is originally from the Samoan Islands and then played his high school ball at IMG Academy in Bradenton, four-hours north of Miami, similar to Francis Maugioa.

Ha was stuck behind some talented players in his first two seasons at Miami but broke through this season with thirty-six receptions for 470 yards and four touchdowns. It still feels like there is meat on the bone for Ha if he returns for a fourth season but a strong postseason could see him get enough of a draftable grade to decide to declare early. A solid take for the Hurricanes here but not quite five-star status.

2028 4-star G Max Massey [RG #5]: 6'2", 322lbs | Pensacola, FL Image
The Hurricanes can't be pleased with their hit rate on the offensive line as Massey is another player that took a lot of resources to land, fending off Florida, Florida State and the Bulldogs. He was a bit of a tweener and continues to struggle to find a role along Miami's offensive line, most recently making the move to tackle where he projects to be one of the names in contention for the left tackle spot vacated by current starter Darrius Keyes.

2029 5-star CB Alex Tercero [CB #1]: 5'11", 198lbs | Miami, FL Image
Not included in this is former Georgia cornerback Finau Westmoreland, who declared early for the draft last year and was part of the 2028 recruiting cycle. Westmoreland was a top corner in that cycle and Miami got involved in his recruitment late but wasn't able to pull him away from Georgia. He's not on this list as this list only includes current players but with the added context of losing Egboh a few years prior and then Westmoreland the year before, Miami was committed to not letting Georgia come into the city of Miami and land Tercero but that's exactly what Georgia did.

This is probably one of Mario Cristobal's toughest recruiting loss in the recent years as Miami was all in on Tercero, who redshirted last year and has been a solid starter for the Bulldogs this year with twenty seven tackles and three pass deflections. It'll be an interesting matchup as the Hurricanes will surely try to get the smaller Tercero (five-foot-eleven) matched up with Max North, Miami's six-foot-six receiver who might be the most physically gifted receiver they've had in years.

2029 5-star CB Bobby Haslam [CB #2]: 6'1", 184lbs | Tucker, GA (IMG Academy) Image
You take my player, I take yours. The Hurricanes were really excited about the potential of landing three of the nation's top corners (more on that later) in the same recruiting class, one of them being Tucker, Georgia's Bobby Haslam who was playing his senior season at IMG Academy.

Miami fended off LSU and Georgia to land Haslam, who actually made the transition to safety where he's been one of Miami's best players this season with eighty-tackles, six tackles for loss and an interception. Cristobal has been effusive in his praise for Haslam this season, calling him Miami's unsung hero on defense and he'll be a key piece if they intend to make another run through the college football playoffs.

2029 5-star Ronald Abiamiri [CB #3]: 5'11", 204lbs | Hampton, GA Image
Kirby Smart and Co. weren't going to let Miami come into their state and take two top corners in the same cycle, especially not at corner. Both programs swung for the fences, trying to land all three and Georgia came out on top, landing two of the nation's top three corners. Abiamiri hasn't played much for the Bulldogs yet but has played sparingly this season and projects to be in the mix next year for a starting spot.

2029 5-star DT JaMichael Sloman [DT #2]: 6'2", 293lbs | Miami, FL Image
The Hurricanes might have lost the war at corner that cycle but they'll settle for a draw as a whole, beating out Georgia for one of their local kids in Sloman. You can make the argument that Sloman might have the most potential of all of the 2029 kids on this list with six tackles for loss as a true freshman and continuing to improve in his second season with seven tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.

He's a disruptive defensive tackle that is equally effective against the run as he is as a pass rusher and those are worth their weight in gold. The Hurricanes would have loved to have landed Abiamiri and Tercero no doubt but if you gave the coaching staffs the choice between one of the three defensive backs and Sloman or two of the defensive backs, the consensus might be that landing a top tier defensive tackle is the better play

2030 5-star DT Karl Tuten [DT #2]: 6'2", 287lbs | Nashville, GA Image
While who won the 2029 Wars between Georgia and Miami might be debatable, the Hurricanes started the 2030 cycle strong by landing another elite defensive tackle, this time right from the Bulldogs' backyard in Tuten.

Tuten, just like Sloman before him, did not take long to make an impact on the team with six tackles for loss and five sacks this season as a true freshman. Again, this is such a premier position that when you hit as a coaching staff this early, it's typically a sign that you've landed a future first round pick and that's what Miami might have gotten right from the Bulldogs' home state in a bit of a turning of the tide following Georgia's initial success in these battles.

2030 5-star QB Terrance Harris [QB #5]: 6'4", 207lbs | Miami, FL Image
Mario Cristobal was never going to let the top arm talent to come out of his hometown since Teddy Bridgewater leave the state, beating both Georgia and Alabama for Harris' commitment.

It's too early to tell if this was a win for the Hurricanes as many of the other top ranked players in this list coming out of high school did not pan out but the tools are there for Harris to be a great quarterback at the college level and beyond. He's played in two games this season, thrown for two touchdowns with an interception and rushed for sixty-eight yards with a touchdown.

2030 5-star CB Siaki Tu'ikolovatu [CB #4]: 6'1", 201lbs | Bradenton, FL (IMG Academy) Image
Another Samoan player fed through the IMG pipeline, Miami beats out Georgia and Alabama for one of the country's top corners in Siaki.

He's been an instant impact player for the Hurricanes with fifty-two tackles and four pass breakups as a true freshman, getting starter level reps at nickel as part of Miami's rotation with veteran Manuel Arcuri. You can make the argument that Siaki is already a win for the Hurricanes and could develop into one of the better corners in the SEC.

2030 5-star G Quentin Washington [OT #3]: 6'6", 305lbs | White House, TN Image
Miami landed five blue chip offensive line prospect with Washington being one of them. He is redshirting this season.

2030 4-star DE Eric Charles [DE #33]: 6'4", 247lbs | Fort Lauderdale, FL Image
Charles is redshirting this season.

Winner: Miami (slight edge)
Georgia started strong with guys like Prince Egboh and Alex Tercero, two Miami natives that were some of Miami's biggest recruiting losses in the Mario Cristobal Era while the Hurricanes' 'wins' over Georgia weren't very strong with players that didn't pan out.

The tables were turned, however, from 2028 on as Miami began landing the more impactful players in Etinosa Ha, Bobby Haslam, JaMichael Sloman, Karl Tuten and Siaki Tu'ikolovatu and the most impactful player from this list might end up being Terrance Harris, the only quarterback on the list.
