Stamenic Out; Adam Wharton In for Sunderland on Deadline Day

Sunderland had hoped to conclude their transfer business before deadline day but a late bid from Juventus unsettled starting defensive midfielder, Marko Stamenic. The New Zealander demanded to be allowed to go to the Italian club and Sunderland obliged, selling him for a £30M fee. The club only had a few hours to secure the signature of a replacement, but luckily had already scouted out Adam Wharton at Crystal Palace several weeks prior. A £25M deal for Wharton was completed with the 21-year-old English DM coming right in as the first choice #6 to replace Stamenic. He is highly touted for his ball playing ability in the position and has drawn comparisons to Michael Carrick early in his career.
