Halos sign versatile utilityman Dubon for three years

The Los Angeles Angels signed infielder Mauricio Dubon to a three-year, $38 million contract on Monday, adding a defender who can fill in nearly anywhere on the field.

Dubon, 31, hit .225 with eight home runs and 41 RBIs in his lone season with Atlanta. He spent parts of four seasons in Houston before that, where he won a Gold Glove as a utility player in 2023 and hit .278 with a .309 on-base percentage across his time with the Astros.

The versatility is the pitch. Dubon has logged major league innings at every position except catcher, including all four infield spots and all three outfield positions. That gives manager Rocco Baldelli flexibility the Angels have not had, particularly with an outfield that already runs four deep behind Brenton Doyle and an infield anchored by Zach Neto at shortstop and Ke'Bryan Hayes at third.

It also lowers the stakes on the bat. The Angels have spent this offseason signing players coming off poor offensive seasons, including Tyrone Taylor at three years and $33 million, and the case for each has rested on defense holding up while the hitting recovers. Dubon carries less of that burden because his value does not depend on locking down a single spot in the lineup.

Los Angeles is still hoping for the Houston version. Dubon hit .284 in 2023 and .287 in 2024 while playing everywhere the Astros asked, and he has never struck out at a high rate. The power has always been modest, but the contact skills are real and the two-year decline in average is the kind of thing a change of environment sometimes fixes.

The deal is Ng's fourth free agent signing of the winter, following Taylor, right-hander Brusdar Graterol and left-hander Adrian Morejon. Los Angeles has now committed $103.3 million in free agency, most of it to players coming off down seasons.

Los Angeles gets 2027 underway with a win

Los Angeles opened the 2027 season with a 3-2 win in 10 innings at Tampa Bay, taking the lead on a Nolan Schanuel single and ending it on a throw home from Brenton Doyle.

The Angels struck first in the third. Ben Williamson lined a single to right and moved up on a Ke'Bryan Hayes groundout before Schanuel singled to left to bring him in.

Tampa Bay took the lead an inning later. Junior Caminero was hit by a pitch with one out, and Ryan Jeffers followed with a 359-foot drive to left for a two-run homer off Grayson Rodriguez. Andruw Monasterio reached on a Zach Neto error behind it, but Robert Serna grounded out to end the threat.

Los Angeles tied it in the sixth. Neto doubled to right with one out and scored on a Logan O'Hoppe line single to center. Rodriguez finished six innings on three hits and two earned with five strikeouts and no walks. Sean Newcomb, Brusdar Graterol and Ben Joyce followed with four scoreless innings, allowing two baserunners between them.

The Angels went ahead in the 10th. Oswald Peraza, running for Hayes, took second to open the frame, and Schanuel grounded a single to center to score him after a Brenton Doyle strikeout. Graterol worked the last out of the ninth and got two more in the 10th to earn the win.

The finish belonged to the defense. With Monasterio on second and two out, Chandler Simpson blooped a single over Neto's head into left, and Doyle came up throwing to nail Monasterio at the plate for the final out. Joyce got the save in his first opportunity of the year.

Schanuel took Player of the Game honors going 3-for-5 with two RBI. Williamson added two hits and a run. Jeffers led Tampa Bay at 1-for-4 with the homer and both RBI.
