This team is either going to look the exact same next season or drastically different. There is no in-between.

St. Louis Blues select American D-man Kaleb Campgna in 2025 NHL Draft, Penguins draft addresses needs and depth

By Josh Yohe
June 23, 2025

The 2025 NHL Draft has come and past and United States Development team star defenseman Kaleb Campagna has joined a fraternity that includes Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, and Connor McDavid after being drafted first overall in the draft by the St. Louis Blues.

This is the second defenseman the Blues select first overall after selecting defenseman Erik Johnson all the way back in the 2006 NHL Draft, a draft that didn't exactly pay off for the team. Campagna was rivaled with WHL star Matthew Schaefer to be the first overall pick, but the Blues ultimately went with the bigger Campgna over the more gifted Schaefer, who was swiftly picked up by the Philadelphia Flyers with the second overall pick.

The Utah Mammoth rounded out the top three by selecting the highest-ranked forward, selecting Porter Martone with the third overall pick.

The Penguins drafted five skaters during the draft, having traded their first-round pick to the Columbus Blue Jackets for forward Boone Jenner and defenseman Ivan Provorov. The first pick the Penguins made was in the second round, selecting defenseman Will Sharpe with the 51st pick out of the Western Hockey League (WHL).

Draftees

2nd round | 51st overall -- D Will Sharpe, Kelowna Rockets (WHL)
Notes: A smooth-skating defense who leans on his size and athleticism to create spacing on the eye. At 6-foot-2, 190 pounds, he has impressive strides on the ice and is able to convert through the neutral zone impressively. Definitely a raw prospect that needs more seasoning in juniors/minor leagues to get up to speed. Intangibles could use some work, but an intriguing prospect nonetheless.

3rd round | 77th overall -- F Jaxon Fuder, Red Deer Rebels (WHL)
Notes: Played mostly center this past season in the WHL as an overaged played in the WHL. Didn't rack up the numbers like some expected him to, to the tune of eight goals and 34 points before missing the rest of the season with injury. Expectations are that he'll go back for another season in the WHL or see time in the ECHL with the Pens' affiliate, the Wheeling Nailers. Needs to expand his game and adjust to a much more physical pace.

3rd round | 96th overall -- D Quinn Beauchesne, Guelph Storm (OHL)
Notes: One of the more elite skating defenseman who feels a bit like a steal to be grabbed as the last pick in the third round. He scored 10 goals and 24 points in his age-18 season with the Storm and will definitely top those totals this year. A right-handed shot that manages the powerplay extremely well.

4th round | 128th overall -- F Owen Griffin, Kingston Frontenac (OHL)
Notes: Pittsburgh drafts another impressive speedster who is incredible at creating his own shot and offenses. He needs to clean up and finetune his game some more with some much-needed time as a top of the line prospect back in the OHL. It'll be a slow grind for him but one could argue he has more potential than all of the prospects drafted thus far other than Will Sharpe.

Pittsburgh Penguins trade 152nd pick, 213th pick, and 224th pick to New York Islanders for 2026 4th round pick and 2026 6th round pick

6th round | 192nd overall -- F Topias Hynninen, Jokerit (SM-Liiga)
Notes: The most intriguing prospect of the bunch. It's always interesting to grab the 19-year-old European that will see another year or two in Europe before making the jump to the NHL. Hynninen played a solid 200-foot game over Finland, but he's one of the more complete players being drafted this late in the NHL draft.

Which one of these dudes gonna be good?

Also, FYI, you can't centertable and div at the same time. Centertable centers to the middle of the post no matter the size of the window and div is a set position. This is what your layout looks like on a wider screen https://i.imgur.com/eG7q4vo.png. Just put it all in a div wrapper so it keeps the same width and placement regardless of screen size.

I appreciate heads up, can you check and see if I've fixed it now?

Honestly, we were pretty Stanley Cup or bust all season, so scouting didn't really get a ton of focus. They are all about two or three years away from being anything of note.

Penguins show D Matt Grzelcyk the door, sign Boeser to long-term contract ahead of free agency

By Josh Yohe
June 29, 2025

Ladies and gentlemen, don't look now, but the reigning Stanley Cup champions may have successfully won the off-season without signing one free agent yet.

Widely expected to have to be let go due to the team eventually needing to retool for the future, the Penguins have resigned star forward Brock Boeser to a five-year contract, worth $36 million total. His cap hit will come in at $7.2 per year. The team was reportedly on their last legs trying to negotiate a contract with Boeser, originally offering him a three-year contract, but eventually reached an agreement on term, landing on a 5-year term that will carry Boeser on the Penguins' books until he reaches his age-33 season.

Boeser, landed by the Penguins mid-season from the Vancouver Canucks to help the team make their Stanley Cup championship push - scored 28 goals and 61 points between the two teams before leading the playoffs in goal-scoring with 13 goals and led the Penguins with 21 points through 22 games. He scored two key goals for the team in Game 7 on the way to their 3-2 overtime victory over the Edmonton Oilers.

The Pittsburgh Penguins were able to successfully negotiate a one-year contract extension for Stanley Cup hero forward Emil Bemstrom, signing a simple, one-year, $1 million contract to return to the team to continue to bolster the team's bottom six forward corps. He scored 13 goals and 26 points in 67 games played, while sporting an impressive +15 plus/minus rating, while averaging 11:24 of ice-time.

The Penguins also re-signed forward Connor Dewar to a $975 thousand contract for one year, on a two-way deal. Dewar provided consistent offensive spark for the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins in the AHL, scoring 13 goals and 47 points in 70 games played. The team also snagged grinder forward Bokondji Imama to a one-year, two-way contract for $800 thousand.

It will be interesting for the Penguins on how they will replace defenseman Matt Grzelcyk, who has reportedly priced himself out of his position in Pittsburgh. The team will enter the free agency period with just over $8 million of cap space. Knowing GM Kyle Dubas, the Penguins will try to replace him by committee rather than going big-game hunting.

F Brock Boeser (5-year, $7.2 million)
