Minutemen trudge through rainy affair to slip past Toledo

Despite the offense being unable to kick into gear until late in the second half, the UMass Minutemen have nabbed their first win of the season, as well as the first win of young offensive coordinator James Xavier’s collegiate career, after a rainy, 21-6 slugging of the Toledo Rockets.

The team jumped to a 7-0 lead thanks to their defense: the defensive pressure got home and knocked the ball out of Toledo quarterback Tucker Gleason’s hands and was recovered on the way to their own end zone. That would be all the scoring for the majority of the game, thanks to untimely turnovers and sloppy drives that would often end in punts.

“It was ugly, that much is an understatement,” said offensive James Xaxier on his offense’s performance. “We toughed it out and capitalized when we desperately needed it. We have a ton of mistakes to fix and dents to buff out, but I’m confident we’ll get there. It’s a growing process.”

UMass quarterback Taisun Phommachanh challenged himself to limit the turnovers after an awful debut last week against Eastern Michigan. Despite a pass intended for Starling Galban that was tipped into the hands of a Toledo defender, he played adequately.

“I definitely feel better than I did last weekend, but winning has that effect on people,” he commented. “We’re a long way from where we want to be. The road to improvement continues.”

Phommachanh connected with backup running back C.J. Hester out of the backfield for the third touchdown of the game after scrambling for a six-yard score himself earlier in the fourth quarter to push the lead too far from Toledo’s grasp. The defense held stout and held onto the win for the Minutemen.

“It was a tough game, " head coach Don Brown commented. “We needed to be sound of mind, and our defense really came through and won us a game. The offense is making fewer mistakes, and that is really promising. Onto next week.”
