NOTES & QUOTES

Heat Starting Five: Tony Parker, Antonio Snow, Josh Richardson, Carmelo Anthony, Hassan Whiteside

Summary: The Pacers started things off on the right foot, playing Pacers basketball. All perimeter scoring. This type of play made it difficult for Miami to get a solid lead in the first game of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Difficult, but not impossible. A few key stops and Miami was able to take a narrow lead late in the second quarter.

Miami kicked off the third quarter with nine unanswered points to build up a double digit lead. Indiana was not going away as a few well-timed 3 points, put them right back in it, facing only a six point deficit. Miami was able to nail a few three-point shots of their own in the fourth quarter, after struggling in the first half, as they took a run late in the fourth quarter to lead them to a Game 1 victory.

Key Stats for IND: 38/80 (48%) - FG|13/15 (87%) - FT |14 – Fastbreak Points|48 – Points in Paint|37 – Bench Points|25 – Assists| 36 – Rebounds
Key Stats for MIA: 47/75 (63%) - FG|6/10 (60%) - FT |30 – Fastbreak Points|58 – Points in Paint|38 – Bench Points|32 – Assists| 37 – Rebounds

Heat Coach Erik Spoelstra on stopping Indiana’s three-point barrage: We know this is how they play. They like the pace and space game. They are one of the best three-point shooting teams in our conference. We have to be able to close out quickly well on the perimeter. Our personnel was able to do just that tonight.

Pacers Coach Nate McMillan on close loss: It’s just the first game. We had some good moments. We have some things to study before the next game.

Dwyane Wade on Josh Richardson’s late game heroics: He’s a special player. He’s had cutch moments this season and he had a couple more tonight. Those shots really energized us late and gave us the boost we needed to get the win.

Snow becomes the third player in NBA History to be named ROY and MVP in the same season

“Amazing.”

“Impressive.”

“Legendary.”

“Mind-Blowing.”

“Exciting.”

All of these words have been used to describe Antonio Snow’s rookie season with Miami. After gaining notoriety as a streetball legend, Snow played his way across the globe against current and former NBA stars increasing his credibility. So much so, that he earned an invite to the NBA Combine. Things were finally starting to come together for Snow until he tore his MCL in the first quarter of the scrimmage causing his draft stock to plummet. He wasn’t allowed to step foot on a court until July.

“Basketball was a way out. Always has been. It was a way out and I was so damn close to providing a real opportunity for me and my brother. I just couldn’t give up.”

After rehabbing like a madman, he went on a Nike sponsored tour, playing against NBA stars across the country as he looked to prove to NBA teams that he was still worth a shot. His greatest performance came in Chicago where he faced lineups featuring Dwyane Wade, Patrick Beverly, and Anthony Davis. The connections he made there, forged a path for the Miami Heat to reach out to him.

“I just wanted to prove to them I could.”

And he has done just that. Averaging over 25 points and nearly 6 assists per game as he led the Miami Heat to a 56-win season and the second seed in the Eastern Conference.

“I owe this franchise everything. I owe D. Wade everything. We’re going to take it as far as we can before he calls it a career. That was one of the first things I told him.”

Wade, going into his final season, felt the need to push for support in the back court.

“I came away very impressed with him in Chicago. I knew he could be the future of Miami. I appreciate that he’s repaying the favor this soon,” he laughed. “He promised and he has delivered.”

Winning this year’s MVP and ROY awards puts Snow in a very elite class. Wilt Chamberlain (1960) and Wes Unseld (1969) were the only two players to hold this honor. Forty years later and Antonio Snow joins them. There’s only one person who doesn’t seemed surprised by Snow’s performance, Allen Iverson, who was among the first to jump on the Antonio Snow bandwagon two years ago.

“I told y’all he’s The One.”
