Patriots defense shines in 34-6 win over Dolphins as Tua, Tyreek Hill grounded
New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo channeled his inner Bill Belichick, rolling an unconventional defense with five to six cornerbacks on the field at a time in the Patriots dominant 34-6 win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
Tyreek Hill caught six passes for only 59 yards, averaging just 9.8 yards per reception with twenty-five of his yards coming on the first play of the game. After that, it was virtually impossible for Hill or any of Miami's receivers to create any separation as the Patriots -- one of the more man heavy defenses in the league -- primarily played zone defense with at times two cornerbacks at safety in Jonathan Jones and Benjamin St-Juste. Rookie safety Peyton Bowen, one of the team's fastest players, also saw heavy action in his most involved game of the season while New England's usual starters, Jabril Peppers and Kamari Ramsey, played sparingly as the Patriots opted for speed over run support.
While New England adapted, Miami's defense didn't with Jalen Ramsey covering second-year receiver Barion Brown for most of the game while Christian Watson and Stefon Diggs each caught seven passes and a touchdown apiece. Drake Maye finished the game 25 of 39 for 227 yards and four touchdowns with 43 rushing yards.
The Patriots were without several key defensive linemen with Deangelo Malone, replacing the injured Chase Young, having a standout game with two sacks while Leonard Williams, replacing Christian Barmore, had a sack and five quarterback pressures. Patriots D continues to dominate in win over Packers
New England Patriots Stefon Diggs wound back the clock, pulling away from one of the fastest players in the league in Eric Stokes for a 62-yard third down conversion in the final minutes of New England's 21-10 win over the Green Bay Packers to help the Patriots secure their eight win of the season.
Diggs also scored the first touchdown of the game after a first half shutout from both teams, giving the Patriots a 7-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter. It would be short lived as MarShawn Lloyd, replacing the injured Josh Jacobs, ripped off a 48-yard run early in the third quarter and on fourth down, Jordan Love scrambled around and found Romeo Doubs for the go-ahead touchdown with eight minutes left.
It would be all Rhamondre Stevenson on the next drive who kept the drive alive with a nineteen yard pickup on 2nd and 21, picking up the additional three yards on the next play and two plays later, took a screen pass from Drake Maye twenty-five yards for the touchdown.
It would be Diggs' turn to put on his do-it-yourself-hat on the next Patriots possession following a Green Bay punt, catching back-to-back receptions for a total of twenty-two yards and on third and four with three minutes left in the game, he'd get open across the middle and pull away from Stokes, aided by a key Hunter Henry block, to get the ball to the Green Bay six-yard line from the Patriots 32-yard line in a blink of an eye. Derrick Henry would punch it in.
It was a quiet day for Christian Watson in his first game against the Green Bay Packers, the team that drafted him. Watson was held without a catch by Travis Hunter with two drops and left the game with an injury late in the fourth quarter while engaging as a blocker.
