Sellers, Harbor shine as South Carolina rolls in Sneed's debut
Williams-Brice Stadium — Columbia, SC
South Carolina got the Julian Sneed era off to a winning start as the Gamecocks' offense dominated Kent State due in large part to the play of quarterback LaNorris Sellers and receiver Nyck Harbor.

It wasn't the sternest of tests for Sneed's motion and shift based offense that saw the Golden Flashes struggle to keep tabs on Harbor as he was moved all over the field to create mismatches and force Kent State into showing their hand before the snap in an effort to slow him down. However, it wouldn't work as South Carolina forced their opponents to commit to a choice in defense and it seemed like that choice was always wrong.

"We're going to take a few weeks to really get this going," Sneed said after the game. "It's not something that you're going to see a lot across the season so I know that we'll have the edge over our opponents once everything is clicking."

The Gamecocks jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter before the visitors came roaring back with 10 unanswered points ot start the second quarter. Sneed's men hit back quickly to restore their two-score advantage before heading into the lockerooms at halftime with a 24-13 lead thanks to a Sean Leonard field goal for Kent State.

The second half was one-way traffic as Flashes quarterback Dru DeShields began to show signs of injury from an accumulation of hits and fatigue.

That said, the redshirt junior out of Beloit, Ohio did throw for 346 yards, albeit it on 53 passing attempts. Tight end Terik Mulder found himself on the receiving end of most of those passes, collecting 7 receptions for 111 yards.

The day also featured a running back by committe approach for the Cocks as four different backs got touches tonight.

"We''re going to focus on stopping the pass next week. We can't give up almost 400 yards every week," Sneed said.

The Gamecocks will remain at home next week to take on Football Championship Subdivision team, Towson.

I have a feeling that Harbor is going to be a problem for teams in this offense!

Got some concerns for you in a few different positions, but if your stars can play like stars, I think you're in good shape.

Definitely. The motions and shifts moving defenders give him a lot of space to catch the ball in and it's curtains once he has it.

Yeah, we're shaky depth wise. Gonna have to pray for no injuries as well.
