Pittsburgh, PA. - Just three plays into Sunday's showdown between the undefeated Rams and the 9-1 Steelers, the tone was set.
Alex Highsmith barreled around the edge, leveled Justin Fields, and knocked the ball loose. Safety Ji'Ayir Brown scooped up the fumble and raced to the end zone, igniting what would become a 31-0 run as Pittsburgh steamrolled Los Angeles 38-14 at Acrisure Stadium.
The Rams' perfect season is over, and it wasn't even close.
Fields and the Los Angeles offense managed just 38 yards in the first half as Pittsburgh's defense suffocated any rhythm the Rams tried to establish. Fields absorbed four sacks and fumbled twice, both leading directly to Steelers touchdowns.
The pressure was relentless, the coverage was suffocating, and the Rams had no answers.
To add insult to injury, rookie Ryan Williams the player Pittsburgh selected with the first-round pick they acquired from Los Angeles in last year's draft, torched his would-be former team for a pair of touchdowns. The irony wasn't lost on anyone.
Fields finally found some breathing room in the third quarter, connecting on a touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 31-7. Los Angeles would get a bit of luck in the 4th quarter for the final score of the game, as Jordan Tyson fumbled on the 1 yard line stretching foe the touchdown. Terrance Ferguson, however, made a heads up play, recovering the ball in the end zone for the final touchdown of the contest.
"If we had a few more bounces go our way like that, it would be a different game," Rams head coach Sean McVay said after the loss.
Of Pittsburgh's 38 points, 21 came directly off turnovers. Even when the Steelers made mistakes — like Keaton Mitchell's fumble in the red zone late in the second quarter — Los Angeles couldn't capitalize. A sack that nearly resulted in a safety forced the Rams to punt, and Anthony Richardson took over on a short field to set up a field goal before halftime.
The Steelers were opportunistic. The Rams were sloppy. That was the difference.
Both linebacker Patrick Queen and edge rusher T.J. Watt left the game in the second half with minor injuries, briefly raising concerns for Pittsburgh. But head coach Mike Tomlin announced after the game that both players would be ready for next week's crucial matchup against the Detroit Lions.
The news was a relief for a Steelers team that's now 10-1 and firmly in control of the AFC playoff race.
