Oklahoma State Falters Late As Sooners Avoid Upset In Stillwater

The Oklahoma State Cowboys unloaded their entire six-shooter on the visiting #1-ranked Oklahoma Sooners, but in the end, it wasn't enough to derail the reigning National Champions who pulled away in the fourth quarter for the eventual 49-30 victory in Stillwater for their 93rd Bedlam Series victory.

If you look at the final score alone, you may think this was a game the Sooners got sloppy late and allowed the Cowboys to make it respectable, but it was far from that. The Cowboys had the Sooners on the ropes for much of the game, and capitalized in a big way out of the half to nearly catch the Sooners stumbling after a red-hot opening week win against the Oregon Ducks.

A physical first half gave way to an explosive second stanza as Markelle Nickey tossed two touchdowns, including a beautiful rope to Darren Lyles with just 19 seconds left in the first half, and Terrance Butcher added his own score to give the Sooners a 21-10 lead going into the halftime break.

With possession coming out of the half I sincerely though we would come out, execute the 'double dip,' and ride off into the sunset, but it wasn't nightfall yet at the OK Corral. Oklahoma State snagged a pair of interceptions from Markelle Nickey and forced a fumble by Dillon Slye, turning the three turnovers into 13 points. The only saving grace for the Sooners was that Terrance Butcher interrupted the Cowboys' scoring with his second touchdown, giving Oklahoma a slim 28-23 lead going into the final frame.

Thankfully, both the Sooners defense and Nickey finally pulled their heads out of their respective asses, with DeMarco Slayton snagging a beautiful toe-tap interception in the end zone, then Nickey capitalizing with an absolute laser to Floyd Canaday—splitting the Cowboys safeties on a post-route that turned into a 72-yard touchdown.

Oklahoma State would march back down the field, behind an efficient and balanced attack by LaMichael Jamerson, to once again pull within a mere five points. When the Sooners' next drive stalled into a third-and-out following a conversion that was called back on a holding penalty, it looked like the Cowboys might repeat history and stun the Sooners in Stillwater.

Instead, the Sooners defense came up with their own three-and-out, then Nickey followed it up with a perfect drive, going 4/4 for 61 of the 69 Sooner yards and tossing the 10-yard touchdown to Maurice Lucky to put the Sooners comfortably up 42-30. With their momentum gone, the Cowboys crumbled, fumbling the ensuing kickoff and conceding another touchdown.

The once promising game ended with a whimper by LaMichael Jamerson, who was intercepted on fourth down after throwing an absolute prayer towards the end zone. Ja'Darius Pleasants grabbed the duck, and the Sooners ran out the clock to escape Stillwater with a thrilling victory.

Question One - Hank Oiler (The O'Colly): "Coach Leon, LaMichael Jamerson continues to find success through the air against your defense, but is also finding his share of interceptions. What was it about your defensive game plan that allowed Jamerson to routinely find open receivers, until they reached the red zone? If I have my stats correct, Jamerson was 5/17 inside the 35-yard line, but 24/28 outside of it."

Armando Leon: "We're making a concerted effort this year to keep guys in front of us to avoid being beaten over the top, something that has admittedly plagued my defenses in seasons past, and I think that plays a big part in it. When you've got 80 yards to go, it's easy to stretch the defense out and exploit the one-mismatch. Once you're 35 yards out, suddenly the windows tighten up and your margin for error shrinks. That in turn, speeds up the quarterback's clock and we're already bearing down on him with an aggressive pass-rush, boom. Mistakes happen. You don't like a guy throwing for 319 yards on you, but when you limit them to three field goals, force two interceptions, you can kind of balance the good with the bad. So long as the good comes with a win."

Question Two - Meg Semental (SEC Network): "Terrance Butcher had a great game on paper with 17 attempts and 144 rushing yards, but watching the game it didn't feel like he was routinely finding open running lanes. Did that play a role in true freshman Markelle Nickey throwing the ball 37 times despite making his first road start, in a hostile rivalry game environment?"

Armando Leon: "I'm glad someone else noticed that, Meg, because when I looked at the stat sheet and saw his yardage total, I honestly thought it was a typo. Credit the Cowboys' defense, they were swarming the ball and it honestly felt like aside from a few big runs, we never had daylight in the running game. Brad carried the ball eight times for 19 yards and Dill had two attempts for two yards. We didn't want to keep bashing our heads into the Cowboys' defensive line, so we let Nickey air it out, we have trust in him that he'll execute. He had a few bad throws in the third that started to swing the momentum, but he's fearless. You couldn't tell this was a true freshman making his first road start, 'cause after that second interception, a lot of young quarterbacks go into a shell. Instead, he came out and let the next throw rip. No fear. If he doesn't connect on that post, I don't know if we steal the momentum back and ultimately, the game."

Question Three - James McDavid (OU Daily): "No doubt that Nickey stepped up, but how about your own defense, Coach Leon? If Slayton doesn't come up with that red zone interception, a miraculous toe-tap one at that, then they get at least three points and suddenly it's a 28-26 game. Two interceptions in the fourth quarter, a forced fumble on special teams, and ultimately four sacks. Those are the kind of plays you expect to see out of a National Championship caliber defense, no?"

Armando Leon: "I'm going to give my boys a little tough love here, 'cause I know they can take it. Those plays in the fourth quarter were great, no doubt about it. And they'll be celebrated. But at the same time, we're not in desperate need for those plays if LaMarcus Kalis isn't barreling through three tackles for an 81-yard touchdown, or Jamerson finding a wide-open tight end on 3rd-and-12 for a 25-yard gain. The plays we ultimately made are plays that win championships no doubt, but those kind of mental lapses I just highlighted? Those are plays that lose championships. We've got a lot of work to do to get this unit where I want it to be, but I have no doubt that the group of guys we have in-house are the men to get it there."

On one hand, I love Nickey's guts and his grit. It takes a certain kind of guile to brush off two interceptions in the third quarter and come out throwing lasers to put the game out of reach. But, and I'm just playing devil's advocate here, those are also the kind of things that see you lose to a championship caliber team.

It's just game two, but you have to feel like Leon is starting to put the nails to the freshman about the interception, even a little bit. One of those throws was a great play by the corner, the other was just Nickey staring down Maurice Lucky on the third crossing route to the tight end in the game; you can't keep throwing the same route and expect the defense not to adjust. They did, but thankfully, he did as well.

I'll be the first to admit, I was worried going into the fourth quarter; doubly so when Oklahoma State got the ball back with 2:23 to play and a five-point deficit. But for at least one more game, the boys did what championship caliber teams do with the chips on the table.

BT: "Aside from a pair of interceptions in each game, Markelle Nickey has been nearly flawless in his first two starts as a true freshman. What about him early in camp gave you the confidence to not only give him the green light to start, but to put as much of the offense on his shoulders as you have to start the season?"

AL: "Nick is unflappable and that stood out from the first day of camp. When he comes off the field you can't tell if he threw a touchdown or an interception. He'll get his jawing in directly after the play, we've already got some celebratory highlights of his, but once he hits that sideline it's clean slate, right back to work. The workload wasn't planned, but we had no qualms about putting the ball in his hands when injuries popped up in game one, and the Cowboys shut down our rushing attack last week. We'd like to get more consistent on the ground, but if we have to put it in his hands again, no hesitation."

BT: "I know you said in the postgame that the defensive game plan was by design, but after watching LaMichael Jamerson march the Cowboys up the field, surely you'd like to see a little more resistance from the defense before they reach field goal range, no?"

AL: "The boys have been through the wringer this week, Boone, I can assure you that. We've got to be more disciplined each and every snap, just decide when to turn it on. Big-time sacks and interceptions are great, but not when they come right back with a big play while you're still basking in the limelight. I think we're going to see a much more disciplined unit on the field tomorrow in Lincoln."

BT: "Speaking of the defense, you will be without starting linebacker Tyler Jacques and reserve tackle Mailau Pool this weekend, correct? Care to shed some light on their surprising healthy scratch for this weekend's rivalry showdown?"

AL: "Both guys made a decision that put themselves above the team, and thus are being reminded that the team is above all. I won't go into the specifics, but neither Tyler nor Mailau made the trip to Norman. Once we're back home, we'll reassess where we are and see if they're ready to return to the team."

I didn't want to push the envelope with Coach Leon about the players' absence, so I did some independent research myself into the sudden absence of Tyler Jacques and Mailau Pool. From what I gathered, both players were involved in a drunken altercation at Eskimo Joe's in Stillwater, Oklahoma following the Sooners' win that afternoon. According to my source, they started bellyaching with some upset OK State fans—not players, from what I've gathered—and the back-and-forth turned into an all-out saloon brawl, with both players along with four fans being thrown into the drunk tank for the night.

Losing Jacques especially hurts; he's one of the premier edge rushers in the SEC. But even without Jacques, I don't see a Nebraska team that barely survived FCS Idaho giving the defending National Champs a problem. After the tight back-and-forth in Stillwater last week, I expect the Sooners to come out and make a statement.
