Joe Shiesty Shreds Steelers In Cincinnati Victory

Cincinnati, OH. - If the Gardner Minshew era in Pittsburgh was supposed to feel different than the Will Howard era, Sunday at Paycor Stadium offered little evidence of it.

The Cincinnati Bengals dominated from the opening whistle, building a 23-0 halftime lead and cruising to a 23-6 victory that dropped the Steelers to 4-4 on the season and raised serious questions about whether changing quarterbacks solved anything at all. Minshew finished with a garbage time touchdown to his name and very little else, struggling to generate any rhythm against a Bengals defense that had all the answers on a miserable afternoon for Pittsburgh's offense.

The more damaging storyline, however, played out on the other side of the ball.

A pair of long Ja'Marr Chase touchdowns broke the game open in the first half, and both were self-inflicted wounds that had defensive coordinator Brian Flores visibly frustrated in the postgame.

"Disappointing, to say the least," Flores said bluntly. "On the first one, I don't know how we didn't bring him down. I went back and watched the tape; six different guys were within range to make that tackle. He slipped them all. You better believe the tackling dummy is going to feel it this week."

The second touchdown was equally avoidable. "We thought they were going to run out the clock. Burrow sold the play action, and the corner bit giving Ja'Marr room to run free. That can't happen."

Flores declined to name the cornerback responsible for both breakdowns, but the tape tells the story clearly enough. Joey Porter Jr. was the first missed tackle on Chase's long touchdown run and the corner who bit on the play action on the second. Sources close to the team told ESPN that Porter's recent regression has become a point of internal concern.

"He's gotten into a bad habit of hunting plays, and the Steelers aren't sure why," one source told ESPN. "My personal thought? He's feeling the pressure of having to prove he belongs alongside DeJean and Ramsey."

Joe Burrow was typically devastating in the first half, carving up Pittsburgh's secondary at will, completing 17 of 20 passes for 281 yards and three touchdowns before cooling considerably after halftime, finishing 6/13 for 41 yards with a late intercetpion in the second half as the game was well out of reach. The Steelers had opportunities to make the second half competitive but never capitalized, and the most gut-wrenching moment came midway through the third quarter when Quinshon Judkins left a hurdle attempt without the ball, the fumble deflating whatever momentum the Steelers had managed to build. Cincinnati didn't score off the turnover, but the damage to Pittsburgh's psyche was evident.

When asked postgame whether Minshew would remain the starter heading into next week's divisional road game in Baltimore, Scheelhaase offered nothing definitive.

"The plan hasn't changed," he said evenly. "Whoever we think gives us the best chance to win will see the field."

At 4-4 with the AFC North race very much alive, the Steelers travel to Baltimore next week with questions mounting at quarterback and a defense that is suddenly questioning it's identity.
