Bye Week Report: The State of the Chargers
Even with a slow start and a gut wrenching finish last week to hand the Chargers their first loss of the season, the first two months of the season has been an absolute treat for the Chargers and their fans.

While they won't go undefeated, Los Angeles certainly feels like the cream of the crop when it comes to the hierarchy of NFL teams. Arizona is still currently undefeated but considering that the Chargers point differential is over sixteen points per game and Arizona's is at fourteen, many pundits are still picking the Chargers as being the best team in the NFL. The only question is how wide is that gap and can they avoid the injury bug?

Best player through weeks 1-9:
Will Castonzo is arguably the best player in the league right now. The second year quarterback is averaging 325.9 yards per game along with 28 touchdowns and just four interceptions. When you consider that three of those four interceptions came just last week with one of them being a tipped pass, his season is just that much more impressive.

He's not as big of a running threat this season as he was last season when he rushed for 1,038 yards but he is still averaging 38.1 yards per game and more importantly, has just one fumble on the season.

Worst player through weeks 1-9:
It's not the greatest thing in the world when arguably the worst player on the season for you is the guy you just gave a big extension to. Rashard Keaton has struggled this season and while he's still on pace for yet another seven sack season, the advanced metrics show a different picture. His Pro Football Focus grade of 57.5 is the worst grade along all starters on the team. It doesn't help matters when rookie Willis Rayford has better counting numbers and advanced metrics in more than half of the snaps.

Most Impressive game so far:
W 35-3 at Denver Broncos

It took the offense almost the entire game to get going but the Broncos are probably the best team they've faced and defensive they held them to just three points and kept D'Eriq King in the pocket all night. He was eventually able to get some yardage on them but by then, the game had been decided.

The Falcons and Colts blowouts are also close nominees but given that many think Denver might be the second best team in the AFC, the 35-3 beatdown on the road is that much more impressive.

Least Impressive game so far:
W 34-24 vs. New Orleans

The obvious answer would appear on the surface to be their only loss of the season to Houston. While the first half was certainly by far their worst performance of the season, the second half was probably their best.

In the Super Bowl rematch, Castonzo had probably his worst game of the season with just 212 yards passing and was sacked five times. Felix Whittaker rushed fifteen times for just 47 yards and if it wasn't for a few splash plays offensively, they might have finished under 300 yards of total offense.

Defensively, the team surrendered 351 yards passing to Justin Fields who also rushed for 68 yards. With a healthy Lee Mooney, you wonder if the Saints hang on to that game.

Contract Negotiations at this point:
I know, the first two months of the season has just finished, but there’s some important players headed to free agency for 2029.

LE Joey Bosa – Bosa had trouble signing with the Chargers when he was drafted. We’re all hopeful he won’t have trouble re-signing with the Chargers this offseason. The franchise tag is possible here. He’s the heart and soul of that defense and even with a lightened workload, he still has 6.5 sacks on the season. Bosa is averaging 46.6 snaps per game this year, down from 64 just two seasons prior. The Chargers are trying to keep him fresh for high leverage moments but is paying a player upwards of $17 million in cap hit worth it for just that limited amount of snaps?

TE Hunter Henry – Another veteran that can be considered the heart and soul of the offense. Unlike Bosa, however, the lightened workload has resulted in less production from Henry. He is averaging 17.2 yards per game this season, a career low by a wide margin. It might be by design as he's averaging over 20 snaps less per game while other younger players such as Teryan Vanover and Don Willson have gotten more and more reps. Henry was tagged last season and if the trend continues, he's more likely on his way out.

HB Derrick Henry – Henry was a late re-signing this past offseason and continuing the trend so far, he's seen his role be limited to just a short yardage back. He broke his collarbone against Houston so with his injury history, Henry is likely done after this season, might even retire.

HB Felix Whittaker – The interesting case of Whittaker which is simply that he can't stay healthy. With a shoulder tear against Houston, the former second round pick is now 4/4 for never playing a full season. His numbers are still impressive at 5.7 yards per carry and 75.2 yards per game this season but with his injury history, the Chargers might lowball Whittaker and who knows if he'll resign.

WR Odell Beckham Jr. - D.K. Metcalf and A.J. Brown have been undeniable hits as veteran acquisitions at receiver. Beckham has bee a decent player but nothing to rave about. Even when Brown was out, OBJ failed to make his impact on the game and it has been Brown's return to the lineup that has freed him up to make a few plays. At 35, it's unlikely that the Chargers bring him back especially considering how Jaron Medlock keeps making plays whenever he's on the field.

WR Deion Daniel – Daniel appeared to be a gem after his second season with 451 yards and two touchdowns but he might have just been a looter in a riot. Since then, Daniel has caught just fifteen passes in two seasons and hasn't been able to get on the field. He's a talented player but it just never worked out for Daniel in L.A., a move might be necessary.

Daniel, McKivitz Traded to New England at Deadline
The Los Angeles Chargers have traded receiver Deion Daniel and offensive linemen Colton McKivitz to the New England Patriots.

Per a report from ESPN.com's Adam Schefter, the Patriots will send a 2029 conditional third and seventh round pick to Los Angeles in exchange for Daniel and McKivitz. A subsequent report from Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer indicated that the third-round pick becomes a second-round pick if Daniel finishes top five on the team in receiving yards and the seventh round pick becomes a sixth round pick if McKivitz starts at least five games for the Patriots this season.

In Joseph Wentz' third season, the Patriots are being more aggressive in providing him more weapons and better protection following a sophomore slump. Wentz' passer rating is back up to 114.2 from 84.4 the previous season. Daniel joins a limited receiving corps that needs some added juice as the former fourth round pick will look to regain his 2026 form where he averaged 50.1 yards per game. He'll likely be WR3 behind N'Keal Harry and Michael Gallup.

Daniel was on the final year of his deal with the Chargers which likely prompted the deal from their side. The Chargers signed running back Jamarcus Cherry from the Buffalo Bills practice squad and wide receiver Juwan Stanford from the Miami Dolphins practice squad to replace the roster spots.

When the two teams met earlier in the season, a Broncos offense that was coming off a 34-point performance against Houston scored just three points at home against a vaunted Chargers defense. The Broncos were then able to right the ship, rattling off three straight wins, scoring over 28 points in each game.

Since then, however, they've dropped two straight games with the offense scoring just seventeen points in eight quarters. A prime-time matchup on the road against arguably the top defense in the league isn't what the doctor ordered.

Chargers Dominate King, Broncos on Sunday Night Spotlight
When Stephon White took over the reigns of the front office for the Los Angeles Chargers, one of the names rumored to be his top pick for quarterback was D'Eriq King.

King had joined Denver as a free agent following his exodus from Pittsburgh. With King now with a divisional rival, the pairing of White and King was not a feasible option. Instead, White built the defense that held the former MVP to just nine completions in the Chargers 45-20 win over the Broncos.

The Chargers relied on their rushing attack to score the first two touchdowns of the game and then let MVP candidate Will Castonzo do his thing on the backend. Los Angeles had more rushing (361) and passing (293) yards than Denver's entire offense which finished the game with 213 yards of total offense. The two touchdown came off a short field due to an interception and a late fumble by recently signed Charger Juwan Stanford.

Los Angeles appears to have the kryptonite for what many widely considered to be the second best quarterback in the AFC West behind Patrick Mahomes coming into the season. While D'Eriq King was able to get some garbage stats in the first matchup, he was completely neutralized in the second all while Will Castonzo is making his claim for the top quarterback in the NFL.

The Las Vegas Raiders are trying to enter this arms race with rookie QB Max Good, who lit up the Chargers hobbled secondary in his debut. There is tap now on Good who has thrown an interception in three of his five starts and the Chargers have their secondary back healthy who are fresh off their best performance of the season.

Good, Raiders Struggle in 36-17 Loss to Champs Chargers
Stop me if you've heard this before. A slow start for the offense, the defense holding strong to keep the game in line, reliable kicking game and an explosive plays in the second half.

That is the Charger Way.

After being kept out of the endzone for two quarters, the Chargers scored on the first play of the second half en route to a 36-17 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders.

They scored 21 unanswered points before Chris Godwin's late touchdown made the score more respectable. Max Good, who threw for nearly 400 yards in his starting debut the last time these two teams played, threw two interceptions in the first half and ended the game with three of them while only throwing for 233 yards.

Will Castonzo on the other hand had a clean game with no interceptions and threw for 403 yards on 69 percent completion rate, throwing three touchdowns. Odell Beckham Jr. had his best day as a Charger, catching six passes for 108 yards.

Mr. Irrelevant Teryan Vanover caught two of those three touchdown passes. The other one was the second half opener to A.J. Brown.
