ANALYSIS
What we've learned about Stanford football and
what it will mean in Stanford's 2032 season
By Jeffrey Bishop WellsApril 30, 2032

PALO ALTO, California — Stanford’s condensed spring practice is finished as the Cardinal ended the four-week session with their spring game this past Saturday.
For the first time in the Bubba Mack era, there was no quarterback drama as the Cardinal returned starting quarterback Earl Nienhuis who had a light day, only playing two drives before calling it a day but the standout of the day was transfer quarterback Logan Everett who surely closed the door on any competition for the backup quarterback spot and who is the quarterback in waiting.
Everett plants his flag as QB2
Heading into the spring game, offensive coordinator Richard Wiley had said that quarterbacks Logan Everett and JaMichael Jackson were "neck-and-neck" this spring for the backup quarterback spot but it looked anything but on Saturday. Everett led scoring drives on each of his four drives, including an impressive deep post to receiver Shaquille Knight that might have been the play of the day.
While the touchdown to Knight might have been his standout moment, what really made Everett standout was his grasp of the offense, quick decision making and constantly making the easy throws. The offense looked on time and in rhythm with Everett at the helm while with Jackson, and with Leon Shurmur, it felt a bit more stop-and-start with an overreliance on splash plays which weren't plenty on Saturday for those unites.
It also helps that Everett is a similar quarterback to Nienhuis where he wants to operate from the pocket and his greatest attribute is his arm while with Jackson and Shurmur, who are more dual threats quarterbacks whose running ability are a bit thwarted in the controlled environment.
Defensive line continues to improve
While the offensive line is certainly a strength of this team, even with the losses, the defensive line had a few standout moments that were promising, led by fourth-year junior Salesi Overstreet.
Overstreet had primarily played as an interior lineman in Stanford's defense for the past few seasons as a backup but we saw him featured as an even-front defensive end, standing up as a pass rusher at times. At six-foot-four and 291 pounds, he is an impressive athlete and certainly seems to be adding an element that Stanford hasn't had in the last few years with his game-wrecking capability at the position. Maryland transfer David Drake also had a few pressures that in a live setting would likely have resulted in a sack.
The depth and strength lies along the interior which is evident by the fact that even someone like Overstreet has struggled to crack the rotation. Stanford rotated as many as five bodies with the apparent first-team unit in the first few drives of the game, led by James Mankins and Shaquille Pullard who are the veterans of the group. Redshirt freshman David Okuayinonu got in on the fun as well, getting a hurry on Nienhuis that forced him to throw the ball away.
Don't count out Juan Becht
When Stanford brought in Paul Garrison, Greg Dillard and Gordon Pratt from the transfer portal, many penciled them in as the rotation at outside corner with star nickel Kentrell Marvin returning.
Juant Becht didn't get that memo apparently and probably had the best day among the outside corners. While the spring game isn't everything, it was a good sign for Becht that he not only started the spring game opposite of Garrison but that he played really well, surrendering only one completion and breaking up two passes.
Dillard had a solid outing as well but Becht's length certainly stood out, especially in short yardage where he's able to play press coverage. That is an area where Pratt really struggled at, giving up the aforementioned long touchdown to Knight.
Joe Nunn and Carl Shakir continue to battle it out at right tackle
One of the most intriguing battles of the spring, and one that will likely continue into fall camp, is at right tackle. Carl Shakir won the battle last year as a true freshman, beating out Joe Nunn who ended up briefly starting at left tackle when D.J. Baas went down with a season ending injury before Nunn was sidelined with his own injury.
The prevailing thought was that Shakir would be the unquestioned starter at right tackle since he started every game there as a true freshman but that doesn't appear to be the case with them splitting reps evenly throughout the spring, including the spring game.
Shakir played pretty well last season, surrendering four sacks and registering 33 pancakes. In his 21 games, both as a backup and as a starter, Nunn has yet to surrender a sack and remains a favorite among the coaching staff.

How much playing around do you do in spring game to be able to produce stories and headlines like these? I really commend your ability to flesh out more detail where others skip right past it to get to the next season.

Appreciate it, bruddas. I've done a few things over the years. I use the progression screen to help form a narrative around certain players to provide insights into who has taken a jump and who hasn't without needing to post the ratings. I also will make a secondary save at that point that allows me to advance to the season, play some practices, even at times a game against an FCS opponent or someone I know I won't play at all this season to simulate a real game (ie the spring game) and use those data points to help write the articles.
I also consume a lot, probably too much, CFB content IRL (Go Canes) so I mirror the pacing, discussion points, etc. to add some color to the chise. After doing 30 something seasons with my USF chise, that was the only way to keep it fun and exciting otherwise you're just playing game after game, season after season

Cardinal lose some depth to the transfer portal as eight players depart in post-spring window
Chris Wallace -- 247Sports Stanford Football Insider
Eight Stanford players have enter the post-spring transfer portal, led by former four-star receiver Brent Baker who has been a co-starter for the last two seasons.
Baker is joined by fellow Class of 2030 members running backs Fernando Hooey and David Mancuso, offensive lineman Teddy Landry, defensive tackle Deontae Shorter, linebacker Dimitri Minor and safety Mo Ndukwe. Redshirt junior Hunter Zeise, who has seen some action at left tackle, has also entered the portal. Shorter was also a four-star and saw a reduction in role last season after recording 4.5 sacks as a true freshman two years ago.
The 2030 class had twenty four high school recruits as Stanford had a self-imposed transfer portal ban during that year which led to a focus on the high school ranks where they finished sixth in the country and landed several key players of last year's national championship team such as Kentrell Marvin, Alfonso Bramble, Rashawn Crouse, Tim Bing and Percy Cadet among others.

intentionally. i'm trying to push out any guys that i feel would leave in real life as they are not starters by year 3 and are highly rated enough to start elsewhere. hoarding talent is an easy way to stay at the top imo and happened too much in my CFB 25 chise.
