The Victory Lap: Stanford comes in seventh in initial CFP ranking, let Rodney Cook(us) and some ACC thoughts
Stanford receiver Rodney Cookus on the run against the Miami Hurricanes in Hard Rock Stadium. (Photo: Irene Bronner/DS Photos)
By Anthony Metcalf
Published Oct. 31, 2030, 6:36 p.m., last updated Oct. 31, 2030, 7:03 p.m.
The Stanford Cardinal came in seventh in the first release of the College Football Playoff rankings, the third ranked team in the ACC behind No. 2 SMU and No. 7 Pittsburgh.
It was a promising ranking for Stanford and the conference (more on that later) as the Cardinal were ranked ahead of undefeated Michigan State and TCU and have a bit of a cushion between themselves and one-loss Alabama (11th), two-loss Ohio State (12th) and Texas (13th) but perhaps more importantly, a Miami team (14th) that they beat.
Why is that important? It established the floor for Stanford should, coming out of the bye, they stub their toe in one of the final four matchups, specifically against Oklahoma in the season finale. Should Stanford get through Wake, NC State and Cal in the next three weeks, it would almost guarantee them a spot in the playoffs, no matter what happens against Oklahoma and in the ACC Championship Game should they make it.
Star WR Rodney Cookus is back
As much pride as Cookus might take in his blocking, it was probably refreshing for him to get back to his form after a recent dip with that performance against Miami.
Cookus had arguably his best career game with nine catches for 116 yards and while he scored three touchdowns against Kennesaw State, when adjusted for competition and the stakes of those catches, he was absolutely clutch for the Cardinal.
If this team is to make a playoff run, they'll need Cookus to continue cooking and this is exactly what the doctor's ordered heading into the bye week.
What is the future of the conference?
The ACC had six teams ranked inside the top 25 of the inaugural CFP ranking compared to seven from the Big 10 and nine from the SEC. While the conference has certainly closed the gap between the SEC and the Big Ten in recent years, aided by additions of Stanford and SMU as well as the rise of Miami and Pittsburgh, it still trails them in terms of revenue, perception and ultimately, their outlook.
With the grant of rights coming to an end in 2033, the rumors have already begun that with the reduced exit fee that begin this year, the conference could see some major shake up over the next few months. Miami has been a rumored team for the Big Ten while Clemson and Florida State have long been linked to the SEC.
Where does this leave the likes of Stanford, SMU and Pittsburgh? Quality football programs that might not have the cache to throw their weight around and force a move to a more prominent conference but on their own, without those more flashy logos, would be able to keep the ACC afloat as a 'power conference'?
The next few weeks will be very interesting, especially if SMU and Pittsburgh and Stanford continue to dominate the conference and perhaps make a run in the College Football Playoffs as the narrative could quickly shift from the logos of Miami, Clemson and Florida State doing the heavy lifting to perhaps those teams not doing enough to hold their weight in helping keep the conference competitive with the others.

Miami in the big ten just seems wrong. Big ten is for teams with bad weather and no flash.

amazing win over your boys, always love putting together those game winning clutch drives. I like your path to end the season and like you said, if you can get through these next few weeks you guys should be playoff bound. Lasike is an animal. Dude reminds me of Brandon Jacobs. That TD run against Syracuse was nasty.

Stanford beats out Oregon, Notre Dame for four-star DT David Okuayinonu
Chris Wallace -- 247Sports Stanford Football Insider
Four-star defensive tackle David Okuayinonu has committed to the Cardinal, becoming the first member of the 2031 recruiting class.
Okuayinonu, who was born in Liberia, is a top-100 prospect and one of the top defensive tackles in the country. He's a powerful athlete that has grown into his body after initially being a linebacker as a high school freshman.
The Cardinal were able to hold off Oregon and Notre Dame to secure his commitment, finally getting a win on the board after a slow start to the recruiting cycle which has featured some high profile losses, including quarterbacks Ben Radunz (Alabama) and JaMichael Jackson (Notre Dame).
Stanford is in a similar situation with Maryland running back Malik Marshall who has been their top target this entire cycle. Notre Dame and Penn State are making a strong push with Marshall set to be in town this weekend for his official visit before visiting the Irish and the Nittany Lions in the next few weeks. Ideally, Stanford would love to close out his recruitment this weekend but if they don't, look out for the Irish as they are the trending favorites right now.
