I like having a mixed RB room so you don't have to worry about one injury wiping out your offensive game plan.

Rice doesn’t look like a challenge on “paper”

Rice coming off two defeats in a row. They look to be struggling, only beating some bad teams so far.

WILLIAMS ERUPTS AS USF SURVIVES RICE SHOOTOUT
Senior WR posts a school-record 307 yards and three scores as Bulls outlast Owls 35–33 in Houston

Saturday October 30, 2027 | 3:30PM | Rice Stadium | Houston, Texas

Houston, Texas - In a game defined by explosive plays, counterpunches, and more than a few held breaths in the closing minutes, the USF Bulls survived on the road, edging Rice 35–33 in a thriller at Rice Stadium to move to 7–1 (4–0 AAC).

Sophomore quarterback Locklan Hewlett delivered the best performance of his young career, throwing for 389 yards and five touchdowns, while senior receiver Tyler Williams authored one of the greatest single-game outings in program history, 11 catches, 307 yards (a new school and American Conference record), and three scores, including touchdowns of 60, 41, and 86 yards.

Rice (4–4, 2–2 AAC) kept punching back behind a balanced attack and a heroic effort from running back D’Andre Hardeman Jr., who totaled 116 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns, but USF’s firepower ultimately proved too much.

USF wasted no time setting the tone. On the Bulls’ second offensive play, Hewlett rolled to his right and stood tall in the pocket and uncorked a bomb down the right sideline, hitting Williams on a deep crossing route in stride for a 60-yard touchdown to give USF a 7–0 lead.

Rice responded with the leg of freshman kicker Anthony Homer, who drilled a 50-yard field goal to cap a 12 play drive.

Early in the second quarter, Hewlett capped a 13-play drive with a 4-yard touchdown pass to DaWann Troup, but Rice clawed back with a 43-yard field goal, a pick of a Hewlett pass, and a one-yard plunge from Hardeman to briefly take a 13–14 deficit.

Then the fireworks began.

Over the final three minutes of the half, Hewlett and Williams completely flipped the game with a 41 yard touchdown connection on a drive that saw Williams catch three passes for 76 yards and the score.

The USF defense would force a punt and the Bulls took over on their own 14 yard line with 1:08 left in the half.

Hewlett sold the play action and pulled up the entire Rice defense, hellbent stopping the run. By the time the defense realized their error Williams had five yards on the Rice corner. Hewlett dropped it in the bucket and Williams caught it in stride at the Rice 40, torching the Owls again for 86 yards to put USF up 28–13 with under a minute remaining.

Rice refused to fold. On the first play of the third-quarter, Patrick Crayton Jr. hit Drayden Dickmann on a perfectly timed seam route, Dickman broke a tackle attempt by Gavin Jenkins and scampered the rest of the way for a 75-yard touchdown, cutting USF’s lead to 28–20.

USF responded immediately, putting together a 10 pay drive that was fueled by a 47 yard Hewlett to Williams pass and ended when Hewlett found Jordyn Bridgewater for a 2-yard touchdown to restore cushion at 35–20.

Rice again punched back.

Hardeman burst outside on a toos to the left for a 25-yard touchdown with three seconds left in the third quarter.

USF's drive faltered and they called on Nico Gramatica to attempt to extend the lead from 41 yards out but his kick missed by inches to the left.

Rice marched down the field and made it 35-33 USF when backup QB Danny O’Neil found Hardeman out of the backfield for a five yard TD with 2:09 remaining. A two-point attempt to tie the game failed when USF’s edge pressure forced O’Neil into an early throw then broke up the pass at the goalline.

The Bulls were able to run out the clock from there.

Safety Cedrick Hawkins finished with 10 tackles. DiNellson Exume added 1.5 sacks and two tackles for loss.

USF’s offensive efficiency was startling: 486 yards on just 52 plays, good for 9.3 yards per snap.

While Williams did the bulk of the damage through the air Hewlett did spread the ball around to and extent. Jordyn Bridgewater caught six passes for 44 yards and a TD and Daidren Zipperer caught three passes for 34 yards, but the night belonged to Williams, whose 307 yards shattered his previous career high.

Rice quite obviously set out to slow down USF's runningback by committee, holding them to just 97 yards on the ground total when figuring loss of nine on a sack. Still, the ground game was a factor with four different players recording runs of 10 yards or more.

Despite the loss, Rice showcased why it entered the game with confidence.

Hardeman was outstanding, carrying 23 times for 100 yards and two rushing touchdowns while adding another score through the air. Dickmann’s 75-yard strike was one of the night’s signature plays.

Homer, meanwhile, was as reliable as any kicker in the country, going 2-for-2 on field goals, including a career-long 50-yarder, and 3-for-3 on extra points.

Linebacker Beau Barton anchored the Owls’ defense with 11 tackles and 3 TFL, while corner Cedrick Higgins added an interception and returned it 26 yards.

USF recorded 600 total yards including special teams, while Rice finished with 389. The Bulls averaged 13.4 yards per pass attempt, a season high, and converted both of their fourth-down attempts.

Rice narrowly won time of possession, executed efficiently on third down, and committed zero penalties, but struggled to contain USF’s vertical passing game.

For USF, the victory keeps DJ Porter’s Bulls unbeaten in American Conference play and sets up a critical conference showdown at North Texas, who is 3-1 in conference play, next week.

Rice, though disappointed, proved worthy of respect. Their offense repeatedly challenged USF's defense, and Fran Brown’s team remains firmly in the bowl conversation.

USF POSTGAME REPORT
USF 35 – RICE 33
Image

Offense
–USF survived a wild back-and-forth battle in Houston, riding a historic performance from senior wideout Tyler Williams, who delivered one of the greatest receiving games in program history. Williams erupted for 307 yards on 11 catches, scoring touchdowns of 60, 41, and 86 yards, routinely dusting Rice’s secondary and turning routine catches into explosive plays.

–Quarterback Locklan Hewlett was brilliant, finishing 22-of-29 for 389 yards and five touchdowns, showing poise and command even as Rice kept punching back. His lone mistake, a second-quarter interception, was immediately erased by a deep strike to Williams on the next drive.

–The Bulls’ run game was quieter than in previous weeks, totaling 97 yards, but still provided timely balance. Connor Suggs led the group with 45 yards on eight carries, while Steven Snead, Nicholas Daniel, and George Shembo each contributed key touches to keep Rice honest.

–USF’s offensive line held up well despite Rice’s pressure looks and frequent stunts. Hewlett was sacked only once and consistently had time to push the ball vertically.

–In total, USF produced 486 yards on just 52 plays, averaging an elite 9.3 yards per snap.

Defense
–Rice’s offense refused to go away, but USF’s defense came up with some key stops to preserve the win. Rice running back D’Andre Hardeman Jr. was the heartbeat of the Owls’ attack, grinding out 100 rushing yards and scoring three total touchdowns.

–The Bulls limited explosive plays for much of the night, but Rice still hit on two back-breaking moments: a 75-yard touchdown bomb early in the third quarter and a late scoring drive that tightened the game in the final minutes.

–Veteran safety Cedrick Hawkins again anchored the defense with a team-high 10 tackles, while defensive tackle DiNellson Exume delivered one of his best games of the season, 7 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and 2 TFL, routinely blowing up interior blocking.

–Nick Jones, Gavin Jenkins, and Jermaine Dalias each provided steady contributions, helping limit Rice’s short passing game and perimeter runs.

–While the Bulls didn’t generate a takeaway, they held Rice to just 5.9 yards per play and made two crucial fourth-quarter stops to secure the win.

Special Teams
–Senior kicker Nico Gramatica went a perfect 5-for-5 on extra points, but missed a key 41 yard field goal that could have provided some cushion late in the game. Gramatica is now just 2 for 5 on field goal attempts after coming into the season 26/33 on his career. So far his struggles have not cost the Bulls a game.

–Return man Elton York delivered 88 kick-return yards, including a 29-yard burst, while also adding an 8-yard punt return that helped flip field position. David Igbinoghene contributed an 18-yard kick return as well.

Quotables
There’s nothing easy about winning on the road in this league. We showed toughness and resilience tonight.” – DJ Porter, USF Head Coach

Tyler put us on his back. I know where he's going to be and he's there. You don’t see many performances like that.” – Locklan Hewlett, Quarterback

We needed stops late, and we found a way. That’s what matters.” – Cedrick Hawkins, Safety

Injury Notes
–Quarterback Locklan Hewlett appeared to favor his right leg throughout the game, the same issue he dealt with last week. His movement was noticeably limited after a scramble, but he remained in the game and continued to throw effectively.

–QB coach Pat Devlin indicated after the game that Hewlett was “good” and that the injury is not believed to be serious, though he will be evaluated throughout the week.

–Center Teriyan Morman remains out with a foot fracture.

News
–Williams’ 307-yard performance earned him the Offensive Player of the Week award for both the American Conference and nationally.

–USF improves to 6–1 overall and 3–0 in American Conference play, setting up a critical stretch of November matchups.

Next Up
–USF will return to Texas for pivotal conference contest against North Texas. A third straight road conference game for the Bulls. North Texas enters the week 6-2 overall with a 3-1 conference record.

USF RECRUITING REPORT
OLB CANTWELL CHOSES UCF

After a string of signed recruits USF has not added another commitment in two weeks while watching a few targets sign elsewhere. That trend continued this week as Juco OLB Rodney Cantwell, the #1270 player in the nation, has chosen UCF over the Bulls.

USF has also removed a number of recruits from their radar as they elect to focus in on a select few. "We're focusing in on a smaller number of recruits that we really feel fit our vision and what we're trying to do on the field, in the locker room and beyond that, beyond next season." MJ Delaney, the team's recruiting coordinator explained.
-USF's class now ranks 30th nationally with 85.35 points. The Bulls lead Tulsa by just under five points for the best class in the American Conference.

Big time win.. Coach Porter is making a statement in Year 1.

pushing for a conference championship right out the gate :yup:
