Don't under estimate Huff and the Eagles. Southern Miss was a Top-25 program in my Dynasty with Huff at the helm and has been so good I actually moved them to the SEC where they still have held their own despite Huff leaving for Clemson where he has guided the Tigers to 2 National Championships.

Coach Porter's Notes
Keith (#95) is their best pass rusher with 11 sacks. He uses a blend of a quick first step and raw strength to create havoc.
Linebackers are decent, they do lack speed as a unit. MLB Esquivel (#54) is their leader and tracks down plays in the run and pass game.
CBs Blackwell (#36) and Bledsoe (#29) have combined for 6 interceptions, they are not strong pressers so if we see that look we need to try to take advantage. Safeties are athletic but coverage skills don't jump out. Myrick (#22) plays downhill and leads the team in tackles.
Coach White's Notes
QB Philo's (#3) numbers don't pop but he did miss several games due to injury. He has a strong arm and good accuracy. He doesn't have game breaking speed but he is nimble enough to get away.
They have a good one two punch at RB with Powell (#29) and Clark (#34). They're actually pretty similar backs, 200 pounds with good speed.
WR Campbell (#87) is the top target with over double the receptions as their next best. Good speed and hands, above average routes.
OL features one of the best in the nation in LT Ramil (#68) the rest of the line is solid with center being the weakness. We will need to get that pass rush push up the middle.

HOLD ON
USF's defense struggles at times but holds on for Myrtle Beach Bowl win

Monday December 20, 2027 | 11:00AM | Brooks Stadium | Conway, South Carolina

Conway, South Carolina - On a chilly Monday morning at Brooks Stadium, USF closed out its resurgent 2027 campaign with one more nervy, uneven, but undeniably resilient performance, holding off Southern Miss 31–24 to capture the Myrtle Beach Bowl. It was far from clean, and at times far from comfortable, but it was unmistakably in character for a Bulls team that has made winning ugly an art form.

The win pushed USF to 12–2 in DJ Porter’s inaugural season, a year defined by defensive grit, explosive receiving talent, and an offense that often had to create answers on the fly. And in this bowl game, USF needed every bit of improvisation.

The biggest early shock didn’t come from Southern Miss, it came from USF’s own sideline. Starting quarterback Locklan Hewlett exited the game in the first quarter with an abdomen injury, sending a hush across the Bulls’ bench. For a moment, it looked catastrophic. Enter Joshua Brantley, who has been steady in spot duty all season. Brantley completed 5 of 7 passes for 36 yards, ran the offense with poise, and kept the Bulls afloat until Hewlett was able to return late in the first half. USF didn’t score with Brantley on the field, but he prevented the game from unraveling. Porter later praised him, saying, “Joshua saved us. Sometimes the most important thing a backup can do is stabilize the boat. He did that.”

When Hewlett returned, he looked like a quarterback intent on making up for lost time. He finished 27-for-37 for 294 yards and three touchdowns, including two difference-making strikes to Tyler Williams. His resilience set the tone for the rest of the afternoon.

USF’s issues in the run game, a recurring theme over the second half of the season, resurfaced again. Outside of a handful of chunk gains, Steven Snead’s 18-yard burst and a physical touchdown run by George Shembo, the Bulls averaged just 3.5 yards per carry, and most designed handoffs went backward or sideways before going forward. Freshman tailback Nicholas Daniel had a particularly tough day, frequently met in the backfield by an active Southern Miss front. With the run game sputtering, Porter and his offensive staff leaned heavily on quick-game concepts, RAC routes, and the chemistry between Hewlett and Williams. That shift proved decisive.

If there was a single player Southern Miss could not handle, it was Tyler Williams. He caught 10 balls for 140 yards and two touchdowns, including a 59-yard catch and run for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter that gave USF critical breathing room. Southern Miss rotated coverages, bailed corners, even bracketed Williams late, but nothing worked. Hewlett repeatedly found him in stride, and Williams’ 96 RAC yards showed just how slippery he was after the catch. Daidren Zipperer added a late touchdown of his own, and Bridgewater and Troup contributed important possession gains throughout the game. Williams performance gives him 1,809 yards on the season, good for an American Conference single season record.

Defensively, USF had stretches of real trouble. Southern Miss quarterback Aaron Philo was sharp and efficient, completing 17 of 21 for 185 yards and a late touchdown. Running back J.P. Powell punched in two short scores and churned out tough yardage. But despite coverage lapses and softness against the run at times, the Bulls found enough key stops to survive. Isaiah Singleton played one of his best games of the year with six tackles, three tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks. Cedrick Hawkins led the team with eight tackles, while Jermaine Dalias and Nick Jones combined for 14 stops. The most important sequence came midway through the third quarter with the score tied 10–10: Singleton and Hawkins stuffed Powell on back-to-back plays, forcing a punt and flipping the momentum. USF scored on the ensuing drive and never lost the lead again.

Still, Southern Miss didn’t go quietly. Powell’s second touchdown cut the deficit to 24–17, and even after USF answered with Zipperer’s score, the Eagles responded with a 26-yard touchdown in the final minute. Only after recovering the onside kick could the Bulls truly breathe.

USF didn’t dominate. They didn’t run the ball well. They didn’t protect the lead cleanly. They didn’t avoid injuries or adversity. But they won, and that has been the defining trait of DJ Porter’s first season. “This team doesn’t flinch,” Porter said afterward. “We don’t always play perfect, but we play together. And today, that was enough.”

Hewlett’s return, Williams’ brilliance, the defense’s key stops, and Brantley’s steady relief all combined to deliver one final reminder of what this Bulls team has become: tough, scrappy, resilient, and winners. USF walks out of Conway as Myrtle Beach Bowl champions, and into 2028 with belief that the best is still ahead.

USF POSTGAME REPORT
#21 USF 31 – Southern Miss 24
Image

Offense
–What began as a potential disaster turned into one of the grittiest offensive efforts of the season. Quarterback Locklan Hewlett suffered an early injury and exited briefly, forcing backup Joshua Brantley into action. Brantley kept the offense steady, completing 5-of-7 passes for 36 yards and preventing the game from sliding out of reach.
–When Hewlett returned late in the first half, he immediately reignited the passing game. He finished 27-of-37 for 294 yards and three touchdowns, delivering his best throws in the fourth quarter to seal the win. His poise after returning from injury was the defining offensive storyline of the afternoon.
–USF’s ground game struggled again, a recurring theme over the past month. Outside of a few timely bursts, Steven Snead’s 18-yard sprint and George Shembo’s physical 11-yard touchdown, the Bulls averaged just 3.5 yards per carry. Nicholas Daniel fought hard for his 25 yards, but running lanes were again scarce.
–The aerial attack carried the day. Tyler Williams put on another masterclass, recording 10 catches for 140 yards and two touchdowns, including a 59-yard strike that flipped the game in USF’s favor early in the fourth quarter. Bridgewater, Troup, Michaels, and Zipperer all contributed to sustaining drives, with Zipperer adding a crucial late touchdown.
–Hewlett and Williams connected repeatedly in key situations, and the Bulls leaned heavily on RAC opportunities to offset their inability to run the ball consistently.
Defense
–Southern Miss pushed USF with a balanced approach, but the Bulls’ defense produced enough impact plays to secure the win. Aaron Philo completed 80% of his passes and avoided turnovers, but USF limited explosive completions and forced long, methodical drives.
–Ira Singleton was outstanding, tallying six tackles, three tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks. His stops on third down were momentum-shifting.
–Cedrick Hawkins led the team with eight tackles, while Jermaine Dalias, Nate Jones, and David Igbinoghene combined for 19 stops. The defense surrendered a pair of short rushing touchdowns to J.P. Powell but stiffened in the red zone throughout the afternoon.
–Though Southern Miss found success late and pulled within one score in the final minute, USF never allowed the tying possession, controlling the ball and field position when it mattered most.
Coach Porter afterward:
We made big stops when the game demanded it. Not perfect, but relentless. That’s who we are.
Special Teams
–Kicker Nico Gramatica hit a 50-yard field goal and went 4-for-4 on PATs. His lone miss came from long distance.
–USF didn’t punt, but the return game played a notable role. Elton York totaled 44 combined return yards, and David Igbinoghene added 55 on kick returns. Hidden yardage kept several drives alive.
Quotables
The heart this team showed, especially Locklan coming back after that injury, says everything about who we are.” – DJ Porter
Jayson kept us steady, and when I got back in, we just trusted the plan. Tyler made my life easy today.” – Locklan Hewlett
We controlled the line when it counted. Proud of our guys for finishing.” – Ira Singleton
Injury Notes
–Locklan Hewlett briefly exited with an abdomen injury but returned and finished the game.
News
–USF closes the season at 12–2, capturing the Myrtle Beach Bowl in DJ Porter’s debut campaign.
–Tyler Williams records his seventh 100-yard game of the season and surpasses 1,800 yards for the year, setting a conference record.
–Hewlett ends the season with 3,720 passing yards, cementing one of the most prolific seasons in program history.
–USF’s defense posts its 12th game of the season with a takeaway or a red-zone stop.
Next Up
–USF heads into the offseason with momentum, a bowl trophy, and rising national expectations heading into 2028.
