Stanford extends rivalry series with Notre Dame, California through 2039
Michael Harrell
January 21, 2031, 04:21 PM ET
Stanford has agreed to extend its long-running rivalry series with Notre Dame and California, finalizing home-and-home agreements with both programs that will run through the 2039 season, the school announced Wednesday.
Under the new agreements, Stanford will continue to play both rivals annually. The Cardinal will travel to California this upcoming season and host Notre Dame, with the Notre Dame game — along with all Stanford home games in the series — broadcast on Prime Video as part of Stanford’s recently announced media partnership with Amazon.
The extension provides Stanford with significant scheduling stability as the program transitions to football independence. With the rivalry renewals in place, Stanford has now allocated 10 of its 12 regular-season games on an annual basis. Those include eight games each year against the SEC, Big Ten and Big 12 through previously announced scheduling partnerships, along with guaranteed matchups against Notre Dame and California.
Stanford officials said the school is in the process of finalizing the remaining two games for the 2031 season, which will complete its first full schedule as an independent. They are both expected to be home matchups for the Cardinal, likely against Pac-12 or MWC opponents.
The series with Notre Dame and California are among the oldest in college football, and the extension ensures their continuation despite the ongoing realignment reshaping the sport.

A worse case possible scenario looms for Stanford as Henry Delos trends towards Ohio State
Chris Wallace -- 247Sports Stanford Football Insider
A few weeks removed from injuring his knee against Ohio State after leading Stanford, the program he stayed loyal to after he was passed over once already by Zach Hoppes who would ironically bolt after one season, Alex Rowe was essentially told by Stanford's coaching staff that he was replaceable with their pursuit of Henry Delos, the top transfer portal quarterback in the market.
Delos now appears to be trending towards Ohio State with Alabama as a distant second. Stanford, the first school he visited, is barely in the picture at this point. Stanford insulted their incumbent starter with nothing to show for it.
This isn't an isolated incident with this coaching staff, led by head coach Bubba Mack whose taken this program to new heights and whose success -- two playoff appearances, an ACC championship, a Heisman finalist -- has helped stave irrelevancy for a Stanford program that, like Cal, could be headed to the Pac-12 and the Group of Six life. Instead, Stanford football was healthy enough to secure a broadcasting deal that could help them last as an Independent following their ACC exodus and for that, fans should be forever grateful.
But between botching the succession plan for Tavien St. Clair by not locking down Josh Ghee and allowing him to transfer to Michigan and then not landing their top option and having to settle for the aforementioned Hoppes as an unproven player at the time. There's also the situation with Hoppes where after one season, he left Stanford for Louisiana-Monroe, only to not start (the same case with Ghee by the way). This season, it was Zach Yelk who entered the year as WR1, became WR2 early on and then just stopped being played only to get drafted in the same round as Trumaine Lasike in the NFL Draft so the talent is clearly there.
We know Mack is a great developer of talent, that much is evident between his teams at Kennesaw State and taking guys like Manu Toomer and Lasike and turning them into household names. But yet, there is a certain player management and bedside manner that appears to be missing or a disconnection with certain players.
He swung for the fences, aimed for the stars but didn't land on the moon with this Delos/Rowe situation and now, he'll need to careful navigate the aftermath of such a blunder and given his history, there can't be much confidence that either the best version of Rowe will be on display this season or, and this is the worst case scenario that looms, Rowe jumps into the portal during the next open period following spring.
