Rich Get Richer As Thunder Land #1 Pick

When the Philadelphia 76ers signed Al Horford away from the rival Boston Celtics, they imagined a towering and versatile duo between himself and Joel Embiid.
Instead, the two never meshed and by 2020 the 76ers were looking to unload the veteran centers contract, willing to give up future draft capital in the process.
Enter the Oklahoma City Thunder, who have built their current roster by acquiring eventually valuable 1st round picks in exactly the same manner. They took on Horford and a 1st round pick, a pick that did not convert to Oklahoma City until the 2026 offseason's due to protections.
With Paul George and Embiid perpetually hurt, the 76ers were one of the worst teams in basketball this year.
And now, because of that, the rich are getting richer as the Oklahoma City Thunder secured the #1 overall pick in the draft after the 76ers 1st round pick finally converted.
While they missed out on the #1 overall pick for the 2nd straight year, the Jazz didn't tumble nearly as far as they did in last year's lottery, where they slid all the way to 5th.
While no one is lamenting that slide now after SF Ace Bailey secured the 2025 Rookie of the Year, they didn't want to see a similar slide.
"We're fortunate that it worked out last year, but that isn't always the case," noted Danny Ainge. "We're happy to be at #2 with a wealth of impact prospects on the board."
The Jazz will also have the 8th overall pick thanks to the Lauri Markkanen trade with the Boston Celtics netted them Boston's unprotected 1st round pick.
The New Orleans Pelicans (3rd, via Milwaukee), Charlotte Hornets (4th), and Washington Wizards (5th) round out the top 5.
