A Heisman Hero: AJ Turner makes a surprise appearance to save Gophers in the 4th quarter

On a night that the state was set for AJ Brand to lead the team for the first time without AJ Turner, the weather decided to play a factor. In the downpour at Purdue, Minnesota had eight (8) dropped passes with six (6) in the first half alone.

“The rain was a factor for sure, but guys need to be better. AJ was putting the ball there, plays had to be made, and nobody was stepping up. We shot ourselves in the foot over and over.” Coach Smith said after the game, a close 28-21 win that nobody expected to be close.

“This is the Big Ten, wins are hard no matter who it is against.”

Without Turner (or so we thought), Minnesota knew the defense was going to have to step up, and the Gopher D did their part. 6.5 sacks and two interceptions led the way as the defense continues to shine since the bye week. Purdue had 301 yards of total offense with three touchdown drives that really broke down to two broken plays by Minnesota. The first was a 54-yard touchdown run by Cole Cabana in the first quarter on a draw play that caught Minnesota off. The second was a 31-yard run by quarterback Tayven Jackson that was pure individual skill, breaking two tackles and jumping over a defender on his way to the endzone.

But when the game was on the line, it was the two defensive captains who stepped up. On second and four, Jon Nestor came with a corner blitz for a big sack, setting up third down and long. The next play, senior captain, safety turned linebacker, Aidan Gousby stepped in front of a middle screen for the interception, his second of the game.

Captain Gousby makes his second interception of the game, leading to the winning drive

That interception set the stage for the game's biggest surprise. Only days after Minnesota announced AJ Turner would be benched, the Heisman favorite came jogging out to the field with just under six minutes left in the game.

"He came to me on the sideline and said, 'Coach, give me a quarter,' and I told him I'll give him one drive," Smith said after the win.

Turner made the most of it, five carries, 54 yards, and a touchdown on his only drive with runs of 17 and 18 yards before his 7 yard touchdown run with 1:54 remaining.

"He's a game changer, best player in the country, and it is not even close," quarterback AJ Brand said. "We know how beat up he is, but he showed heart. Stepping up and making plays when it was needed to get us the dub."

The win keeps Minnesota's playoff and Big Ten championship hopes alive. Moving up to 8th in the polls and tied for first in the Big Ten conference.

Turner's Heisman moment came when nobody expected it, not even his coach

Three rushes in a row led to a Gopher win and a Turner Heisman (ShireNiner Nation)

Turner's Moment and Mick Smith lies

Minnesota, sitting at the top of the Big Ten standings, facing Purdue, last in the Big Ten, on a rainy Saturday night, was not on anyone's viewing list. Especially when it was announced that AJ Turner would be sitting and not play, there was no reason to watch a game that was expected to be boring and not close on the scoreboard. Instead, that game turned into the biggest talking point of the week for two reasons.

AJ Turner finally had his Heisman moment
For a quarterback, a Heisman moment is a big play or a game-winning drive. They are easy to spot, announcers point them out before they happen as an opportunity, and they usually come in big games on primetime. For a running back, those moments are harder to find. Turner could not have asked for a better setting. He sat out the entire game until less than five minutes left, meaning you could not blame him for why Minnesota struggled to score for over 3 and a half quarters. He came in with the game tied, his team needing to win to keep their season's hopes alive, and everyone knew he was going to get the ball as soon as he jogged onto the field.

Five plays. Five runs. 54 yards and a touchdown. Nobody was surprised; it was a story everyone knew was coming as soon as the senior told his coach to put him in. To make his Heisman case even better, Turner broke a run with jukes, missed tackles, and burst into the open field—a perfect highlight reel for a Heisman ceremony.

Smith lied
In the midweek press conference, Mick Smith announced that Turner would not be playing. Player safety, health concerns, and all the typical excuses you hear from a coach. Then, with the game on the line, the coach showed us that player safety was not a concern. Turner's wear and tear on his body suddenly didn't matter when the game was on the line, and the coach needed a win.

When asked about his sudden change of heart, Smith put it on the player and his staff. "AJ came to me and wanted to play. Andrea, our head of Athletic Training, said he was good to go for a few series. We made the decision right there on the sideline to give him one drive to make a difference."

"Do I care that I lied to you media nerds? No. I gave you something to talk about last week, and this week, you're welcome. I'm here to win games, not care about making talking heads happy."

Week 10 in the CFB: SMU tastes defeat, Michigan bounces back

Image
SMU made the trip out to the North West and fell to Washington, 39-28. The loss gives SMU an uphill battle back into the playoffs, but with three Big Ten teams ahead of them with two bound to lose, SMU still controls its own destiny.

Michigan bounced back from last week's Minnesota loss to beat 18th-ranked UCLA at the Big House, putting Michigan right back into the playoff discussion with all eyes on The Game in two weeks time.

Week 11 Top-25 battles
Next week features some huge games in the top of the standings. Starting at the very top, Duke hosts Clemson in a top-5 ACC showdown. The second-ranked USC Trojans face old rival Oregon in Cali, a game that brings back Pac-12 memories. Tennessee has a night game against the rising LSU Tigers, and Ole Miss faces a young but eager Alabama.

Heisman and other awards
The two Heisman favorites have not changed: Minnesota's AJ Turner and Texas Tech's Conner Weigman. Both with primetime games coming up, playoff hopes alive, and leading their teams into uncharted territory for the programs.

The other awards have listed finalists, and this is where the drama is coming early this week. Minnesota's coach, Mick Smith, was left off the finalists for the Coach of the Year award, despite taking a young, completely rebuilt Gopher team to the top ten in the standings. Minnesota also feels snubbed at defensive end. Emmunal Karmo has 11 sacks but is not listed for defensive player of the year in any category, along with freshman LG Mitch Hardon, playing 698 snaps without giving up a sack, and is not listed for any freshman awards or lineman awards.

"It pisses me off, that's for sure. These guys are having career years. Just not even being on the list is a slap in the face to the players." Smith said on his weekly radio call-in. "I'm noticing the disrespect Minnesota has been getting and I'm tired of it."

Smith knows the media are a bunch of clowns. They don’t respect him enough to give him awards, he shows no respect.

I don't think I've ever seen that many undefeated teams this late into a season. The game is so upset happy.

It felt like last season had the opposite. So many teams with 2-3 losses being ranked high. This season is making up for that now.
