‣ If there was one thing that defensive tackle Trent Landry and WILL linebacker Thomas McCariens did often tonight, it was meet at the quarterback. They combined for five sacks tonight.

SMU dominates its way back to being College Football's No. 1 team
By ESPN Staff Writer

DALLAS -- For decades, the idea of SMU standing alone at the summit of college football felt more like nostalgia than prophecy. In 2029, once again, it has become inevitability.

The Mustangs have officially risen to number one in the nation, a milestone forged not by a single star or moment, but by a relentless, two-sided dominance that has made them the most complete team in the sport. Offense. Defense. Physicality. Poise. Week after week, SMU has checked every box - and dared opponents to try and find a weakness that simply hasn't existed.

No one has. Yet.

At the center of it all is Alonzo Cheeseman, the former five-star recruit in his second year at the helm of SMU's offense that has turned said offense into a weekly masterclass in efficiency and explosiveness. Cheeseman doesn't just execute - he controls games, diagnosing defenses before the snap and punishing hesitation after it.

"He sees everything," offensive coordinator Tony Sanchez said. "If you're wrong once, its six points for us. He's just so relentless."

But what truly has separated SMU from last year's dominant squad has been balance. Defenses can't sit back and key on Cheeseman because of the Mustangs' ground game is just as punishing. Freshman Brian Volson has announced himself as a future star with his burst and vision, while sophomore Justice Spielman - the thunder to Volson's lightning - brings a bruising, tone-setting presence that wears down fronts by the fourth quarter. Throw in Cal McCalebb, the third-string running back that has a nose for finding the right lane - and opposing defenses are in trouble.

This is no accident.

Head coach Nico Augustine, working in lockstep with Sanchez, has finally cracked the offensive code -- blending modern spacing concepts with old-school physicality. The result is an attack that adapts to opponents without losing its identity.

"We don't want to guess," Augustine has been quoted as saying. "We want to force teams to react."

So far, they haven't reacted fast enough.

If the offense puts games out of reach, the defense ensures they never get close.

Up front, defensive tackle Trent Landry has been a wrecking ball on the interior, collapsing pockets and blowing up run plays before they can develop. He easily leads the nation in tackles for loss and sacks. Off the edge, WILL linebacker Thomas McCariens has turned speed into chaos, consistently living in opposing backfields and forcing hurried decisions. He may not be the sack king like he was last season when he broke the single-season record for sacks, but he has returned to prove last season was no fluke.

Behind them, the second level and secondary have erased hope.

MIKE linebacker Kevin Lockridge has been the unit's quarterback, diagnosing plays instantly and shutting down anything between the tackles. And patrolling the back end is free safety Armani Medlock, whose range and instincts have made pushing the ball downfield feel like an act of futility.

The numbers back it up. Once again, SMU boasts the best run defense in college football, a distinction they have now repeated.

SMU didn't back into the top spot. They earned.

Convincing wins over ranked Duke, UConn, and Clemson stripped away any remaining skepticism. Its helped that they didn't just win these games - they slaughtered their opponents. Save for an early season scare against rival TCU where they managed to escape thanks to tight end Dwayne Kasay scampering into the end zone late in the fourth quarter, the games haven't been close.

Which begs the question: Who CAN beat them?

There is still one potential regular season obstacle looming - an ACC matchup with top-ten ranked Pittsburgh led by Heisman contender Ify Cashman, a quarterback capable of matching Cheeseman punch for punch. That matchup looms as SMU's final true test before the postseason.

Beyond that (and a game with Georgia Tech where they have fumbled their way out of an undefeated season before), the path leads to the College Football Playoffs, where traditional titans like Oregon, USC, and Georgia await - programs built on championship DNA and depth.

And yet, even with those names looming, there's a growing belief around the sport that the biggest threat to SMU isn't external.

It's internal.

With the number one ranking next o their name, it feels as though the only team capable of beating SMU is SMU themselves.

In 2029, the Mustangs aren't chasing history anymore.

They're setting it.
