Wilcox Out as United Poach Hugo Viana from Manchester City for Director of Football Role

New director, Hugo Viana, worked closely with Amorim at Sporting and fully backs his 3-4-2-1 system.

Manchester United have made a decisive move behind the scenes, sacking sporting director Jason Wilcox after growing frustration over his repeated meddling in first-team affairs. While Wilcox was brought in to modernize structures, his insistence on imposing a preferred tactical identity and recruitment profile increasingly clashed with Ruben Amorim’s vision. Sources inside the club described a breakdown in trust, with mixed messaging filtering down to the squad and undermining a difficult season on the pitch.

INEOS have acted swiftly, appointing Hugo Viana as the new sporting director in a move designed to restore clarity and alignment from top to bottom. Viana arrives with a deep understanding of Amorim’s methods, having worked closely with him at Sporting, where the pair oversaw a coherent model built around youth development, positional intelligence, and long-term squad planning. Crucially, Viana’s role is clearly defined: support the head coach, not override him.

The appointment signals a reset. United believe that full strategic alignment between ownership, sporting director, and head coach is non-negotiable if the club is to stabilize and rebuild. With Viana empowered to shape recruitment, contracts, and pathways in Amorim’s image, the club hopes to end internal friction and return to a unified direction, even if short-term pain is required to get there.

Geovany Quenda First Signing of New Regime for £45M

Quenda joins from Bayern after being ousted from United previously under Wilcox's foolish regime.

Manchester United have taken two decisive actions that signal a clear cultural and sporting reset under Ruben Amorim and new sporting director Hugo Viana. The club have completed the signing of Geovany Quenda from Bayern Munich for £45M, bringing back a player Amorim knows well and trusts implicitly. Quenda arrives to start at right attacking midfield, with his pace, ball-carrying and directness seen as ideal for a side in need of renewed energy and attacking threat.

At the same time, United have cancelled Mason Greenwood’s contract, drawing a firm line on squad standards. While Greenwood had returned to football elsewhere, Amorim and Viana were united in the view that a player associated with serious off-field allegations did not align with the values they are trying to re-establish at the club. The decision was made swiftly and without compromise.

Together, the moves underline a new direction at Old Trafford, one that prioritizes alignment, clarity, and accountability both on and off the pitch.

INEOS Want Three North American Signings in January

After signing Quenda, United will focus on North American talent to strengthen the squad throughout the rest of the window

INEOS are pushing a clear commercial and sporting objective ahead of the January window, with Manchester United targeting three North American signings to expand the club’s reach in the US market. The ownership group believe strengthening ties to North America aligns naturally with United’s global brand and commercial strategy, particularly with the 2026 World Cup still fresh in the region’s spotlight.

Ruben Amorim and sporting director Hugo Viana are fully aligned with the plan, stressing that any additions must fit the manager’s system and long-term sporting vision rather than be purely marketing-driven. The focus is on players who bring intensity, athleticism and tactical intelligence, traits Amorim values highly, while also offering appeal to the North American fanbase.

United’s recruitment team are assessing options across MLS and Europe-based North American internationals, aiming for signings that can contribute immediately while growing the club’s presence across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

United Sign Canadian Moise Bombito from Sister Club OGC Nice for £27.4M

Canadian center-back Bombito will add much needed pace and strength to the backline

Manchester United have completed the signing of Canadian centre back Moïse Bombito from INEOS owned Nice for £27.4M, continuing the club’s push to align recruitment across the ownership group. At 27, Bombito arrives at his physical peak and brings elite recovery pace that United have badly lacked in central defence. His speed and aggression make him an ideal fit for the central centre back role in a back three, where covering space and defending transitions are critical. United believe Bombito’s athletic profile will allow them to play higher up the pitch while providing much needed security against quick counterattacks.

United Sign Kevin Paredes from Wolfsburg for £21.5M

Paredes is a two-way force that will excel at left wing back in Amorim's system after stints at DC United and Wolfsburg

Manchester United have added further North American influence with the signing of 24 year old Kevin Paredes from Wolfsburg for £21.5M. The versatile American arrives to take on the left wing back role, bringing pace, directness and high energy to the flank. Paredes is comfortable driving with the ball, pressing aggressively and contributing in the final third, qualities the club believe suit the demands of a modern wing back. At 24, he still has room to grow and develop under Ruben Amorim, while also providing immediate competition and depth on the left side. United view the move as both a sporting fit and a strategic addition as INEOS continue to expand the club’s profile in the North American market.

United Sign Jack McGlynn from Houston Dynamo for £21.6M

The 24 year old American midfielder, McGlynn, is set to join Amorim's side

Manchester United have completed their final North American signing of the window with the arrival of Jack McGlynn from Houston Dynamo for £21.6M. The 21 year old American midfielder comes in to start at left central midfield, offering composure, passing range and intelligence in possession. McGlynn is known for his ability to control tempo, progress the ball through midfield and contribute from set pieces, traits United believe will translate well at the top level. Despite his age, he is expected to play a significant role immediately as Ruben Amorim reshapes the midfield. The club see McGlynn as both a long term project and a statement signing, combining sporting upside with strategic value as INEOS continue to strengthen United’s footprint in the North American market.
