COUGARS LOSE TOP 2 DEFENSIVE TARGETS

Despite finishing the regular season with 9 wins and a Top-25 ranking for the first time in 11 years , Coach Kirby Moore was unable to sway 5* DE All-American Scott Joy to Pullman.. Rated #20 Overall Day the Washington State Gatorade POY (#1 WA) from has signed with Ohio State as the Cougars fall short in landing their first 5* talent.

Moore
"To be honest I was surprised we stayed in the hunt as long as we did.. We were able to convince Scott to come to Pullman for a Week 12 visit after the loss to Stanford and had a long talk about what he wanted.. He told us despite growing up in Tacoma ever since he was a little kid he wanted to be a Buckeye.. No hard feelings I hope he has a great career there"
Well losing Joy stung, the real loss and a what feels like a kick to the gut was 4* MLB Jaron Banfield (#303 Overall/#3 WA/#39 LB) announcing he was signing with Stanford.. The Graham WA native visited Pullman back in Week 7 and had the Cougars #1 almost the entire season but a Week 13 to Stanford somehow swayed him to sign as WSU falls short of signing what could've also been their first 4* talent on Defense.

Moore
"We new landing Joy was going to be a longshot but we felt like we had Jaron from Day 1 and with our current LB room we felt like he was a instant starter a leader on our Defense for the next 4 years.. This was a big blow.. Coach Bray is going to get busy scouting some LB's who have maybe been overlooked (no scholarships) but odds are we are going to have to hit the Portal hard to recover from this one"
With Joy and Banfield off the Big Board, WSU now 20 players left led by 4* Center Jimmie Gentry and 4* CB Channing Zunega.

CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK
With Week 13 in the books here is a look at Championship Week..

BIG TEN

The Big Ten will be the featured game as we still #1 (11-1) Oregon take on #3 (12-0) Michigan. The Ducks win over #7 Penn State in Week 13 propelled them to the #1 spot in the ranking despite their being 4 undefeated teams in the Top-10.. Michigan's (37-34) win over Ohio State on the road secures the Wolverines a perfect 12-0 record but can they knock off the Ducks to secure the Big Ten Crown and a Top-4 seed?

SEC
#2 (12-0) Alabama finished their regular season with a win over Auburn in the Iron Bowl to also finish a perfect 12-0 earning their shot at #4 (11-1) Georgia in the SEC Championship in another matchup that will decide a Top-4 seed in the playoffs.

BIG 12

Despite their Wee 13 loss to North Texas dropping them from #13 to #20, (10-2) Houston will get a chance to try and knock off #5 (12-0) BYU in the Big 12 title game as BYU looks to secure a 2nd straight title and a Top-4 seed.

ACC

#6 (10-2) Miami will take on #8 (10-2) Boston College for the ACC title with the Hurricanes holding out a slim hope they could still secure a Top-4 seed.

PAC-12

#17 (10-2) Stanford's Week 12 loss to Cal likely ended their hopes for a playoff spot, but the Cardinals rebounded with a big time win in Week 13 beating Notre Dame (44-41) Now the question is can they beat #19 (9-3) Washington State twice in the same season or will the Cougars get their revenge?

MOUNTAIN WEST
#10 (12-0) Arkansas State will put it's perfect record and a shot for the playoffs on the line against (7-5) Nevada.. The Wolfpack played spoiler last season knocking off UNLV in similar fashion.. Can they do it again?

CUSA
#21 (11-1) ECU vs (6-6) Marshall

AMERICAN
#23 (7-5) Bowling Green vs (8-4) Southern Miss

MAC
#24 (9-3) Miami OH vs (9-3) Buffalo

SUN BELT

PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP

Stanford vs Washington State Part II..

It was a slow start for both defenses as the first 15 minutes of the game featured 5 FG's as WSU takes a 9-6 lead but with 4:05 to play in the half, WSU would finally start to light up the scoreboard as the Cougar Offense scores 3 times in the final 4 minutes.

Lee Pulalasi scored the first touchdown with a 7 yd run and then after a fumble by Stanford RB Daniel Bray (87 ovr), backup RB Antonio Abbott would dive in from 1 yd out to extend the Cougar lead to (23-6) with 2:;48 to play. It was a rough 1st half for Bray as the Junior coughs up his 2nd fumble leading to a 6 yd touchdown strike from Nelson to Creer to make it (30-6) at the half.

The first half featured some injuries on both teams as both QB's Malachi Nelson and Elijah Brown were forced to leave the game.. Nelson was joined on the Washington State sideline by RB Brevin Doll who finished the half with 5 carries for 36 yds (7.2 avg) and 1 rec for 9 yds.

With Nelson out of the game backup QB Ajani Sheppard would finish the half 3/3 for 36 yds.

WSU would open up the 2nd half with the ball and as the Cougar Offense came out on the field it was Nelson leading the charge and Nelson wasted little time driving the Cougars down the field on a 9 play drive that ended with a 1 yd touchdown run by Leo Pulalasi. WSU would latter add a 47 yd FG as Adali Lounsbury connects for his 4th FG of the game to extend the elad to (40-6).

Stanford still playing without Brown would turn to True Freshman Kyle Goss (79 ovr) to lead the Cardinals Offense but like Brown he struggled as the Cougar Defense comes up big with 5 sacks on the day and 8 TFL.

Still leading (40-6) WSU would extend the lead early in the 4th as Nelson finds Carter Pabst on a 16 yd score to open up the 4th Quarter making it (47-6) and with 3:12 to play in the game Nelson was still throwing the ball as he hits Lester Creer on a 2 yd score to make it (55-6).

Stanford finally would break the 2nd half shutout with a 23 yd FG with just over a minute to play and after a turnover on dows as WSU fails to run out the clock, Goss goes to the air for a 10 yd touchdown strike to close out the game.
FINAL SCORE WASHINGTON STATE-54 STANFORD-16

KEY COUGARS

IMPACT FROM THE GAME

For Washington State the Pac-12 title is the school's first since 2002. The win also is the Cougar's 10th giving them a chance to tie their 2018 record of 11 wins

With the win WSU and Stanford swap spots in the rankings as WSU moves to #17 meaning that the Pac-12 Champion will not make the Field of 12 in the College Football Playoffs.

The Cougars instead will accept a bid to play in the Holiday Bowl against a fellow Pac-12 member as they will play (6-6) Rice.

The Cougars and Owls have not faced each other since Rice joined the conference.

NEW SCHOOL RECORD

After setting a new school record last season with 17 TD's, SO WR Lester Creer set another school record this year as he now has 109 receptions (new record) for 1434 yds and 13 TD's this season.

Since the arrival of the Holiday Bowl in 1978, Washington State has made the trip south to San Diego 6 times (1988,2003,2016,2017 and2024) but have come away as winners just 1 time (2003 beat Texas 28-20).

After a disappointing loss last year to LSU in the La Bowl, WSU will look to snap it's 6 game Bowl losing streak as they take on (6-6) Rice.

The Owls are coming off a disappointing Week 13 loss to Boise State (45-0) but managed to win 3 straight prior to get Bowl eligible.

Moore "
Well I find it a little odd that 2 teams from the same conference would play each other in a Bowl game, the fact that we have not face Rice since their addition to the Pac-12 it will be a new opponent for us but also gave us alot of game film to watch of them taking on teams we had also faced this season"
