2027 Week Four Preview - Oregon State (3-0) @ BYU (2-2)
Ricky McKinley // Dam Daily • Published: September 24th, 2027
Beaver Nation may be riding high after the massacre at Autzen last week, but the Beavers themselves will need to refocus quickly as they prepare to face off with another Heisman contender in BYU's Bear Bachmeier. BYU had a brutal opening schedule, Weber State aside, but were able to prevail over the Arizona State Sun Devils to pull back to .500 and now turn their attention to spoiling the Beavers' perfect start.
After we take a quick look at how our Beavs stack up against the Cougars we'll take it to another "Leon's Lowdown" where the defensive coordinator talks about what the win against Oregon meant, the strains of facing yet another Heisman contender, and the growing expectations in Corvallis.

Leon's Lowdown
RM: "Before we get to this week's matchup against the Cougars, I want to talk about the win over Oregon a bit, Coach. You've spoken to me before about the respect you had for Dan Lanning after meeting him on the field as a coach for Montana State. How surreal is it to walk into that stadium two years later and win, handily I might add?"
AL: "Yeah, Ricky, I have a lot of respect for Coach Lanning. The first time we met he'd just finished thrashing my defense for 59 points, but instead of focusing on his success he made sure to acknowledge the effort my defense put in and let me know he expected to see me again in the future. That meant a lot to me as an up-and-coming coach. To be able to flip the script on my return to Autzen was surreal and something Lanning and I talked about on the field after the game, just how quickly things can change and thanking him for the encouragement. He joked and told me now he wished we hadn't met so soon."
RM: "One more question about Lanning. You were pretty critical of his team's mentality in the post-game presser. Did you give Lanning a warning the shots were coming?"
AL: laughs "I did, Ricky. We talked a bit about life and circumstance, things outside of the game. Then I let him know: 'I respect the hell out of you, Coach, and I'll always be grateful for the encouragement. But just so you know, I'm going to talk my talk when I get the mic.' He told me he expected nothing less, but reminded me—we're going to play them again next year, so whatever I say now I'd better be ready to back up next time."
RM: "Love it, respecting the other side while still being true to the rivalry. Shifting gears to this week, how much of a challenge is it for you as the defensive coordinator to have to gameplan for another Heisman contending quarterback in back-to-back games?"
AL: "Honestly? It's exciting. This is what we do it for, to challenge the best and see who comes out on top. The challenge is they are both very different players. Sampson likes to use his athleticism to get him into a groove, once we took that away early in the game, he had a hard time finding a rhythm in the passing game. Bear is the opposite, he's a gunslinger back there. He loves standing in the pocket and making you pay, even with bodies collapsing around him. So we've got to stay sound in coverage and make them earn every yard, because even if we hit him—which we plan to do a lot—he's still going to be looking to make plays. He doesn't lead the country in passing yardage for nothing."
RM: "I'm getting one more question in here, Coach, since the first two were on the same subject. Despite the win over Oregon, the Beavers are still unranked and didn't garner any additional votes in the latest AP Poll. Is that something your team uses as motivation when they go up against these blue blood programs, looking to prove the voters wrong?"
AL: "We play for the guys next to us and the logo on our chest, first and foremost. If you start basing your performance on the opinion of others, that's where you start falling apart. Extra motivation never hurt anyone, however, and you better believe our guys know where we're ranked. But it's not the only motivating factor for us, just some more fuel on the already flaming bonfire."
•••
Bear Bachenmeier is an entirely different animal than Elijah Sampson and this matchup is going to test the cohesion of the secondary. Even with Sampson's struggles last game, you can say that was more on the front seven making Sampson panic than the secondary shutting them down. This is going to be the biggest test of the season for the Beavers' secondary.
My gut says the letdown is going to be real; it's only human. Is the letdown going to be enough to let a pedestrian BYU squad, Heisman contender aside, sneak past the Beavers?
I don't think so, but it will be close. I think we need one of Coach Leon's patented 4th-down stands to save the win. 24 Oregon State, 21 BYU is my prediction.

Cougars Maul Beavers Behind Bear's Heisman Caliber Outing
Ricky McKinley // Dam Daily • Published: September 25th, 2027
The final score of the BYU Cougars' 37-21 victory at LaVell Edwards Stadium did not reflect how competitive the contest was, until it suddenly wasn't. The Beavers' vaunted defense kept Heisman contender Bear Bachmeier off-balance for much of the first half, bending at times, but never breaking as they stifled the Cougs into a 9-3 halftime lead.
The second half saw a stark contrast after BYU caught the Beavers' defense creeping towards the line on an RPO, and Bear made them pay. Bachmeier sold the RPO handoff long enough for both Wokomah and Ayers to bite on the run, leaving Cody Hagen streaking up the seam uncovered for the 73-yard touchdown. And from there, the levees broke.
The Beavers had managed to hold Bear and the BYU Cougars to 126 passing yards and only one 3rd-down conversion in the 1st half, but saw those numbers balloon to 212 second-half passing yardage and two third-down conversions, in only four attempts, as the Cougars poured 28 second-half points onto the Beavers.
Trailing 23-6 just before the 4th quarter, Coach Jonathan Smith had seen enough of AJ Maddox—who has yet to toss a touchdown pass in an Oregon State uniform—and brought in last year's starter Kallen Gutridge. While the raw numbers don't inspire confidence, going 15/31 for 160 yards, his two touchdowns stood out for an offense that had stalled and begged the question: is this a different game if Coach Smith makes the switch sooner?
By the time Gutridge came in from relief, the Cougars had 23 points and had controlled the ball for 70% of the game, leaving the Beavers' defense visibly gassed as the Cougars kept the pedal down.
It's a question that needs to be addressed, but before we dig deeper into the sudden quarterback controversy, let's take it to Armando Leon at the post-game presser to find out what, if anything, he felt the Beavers could have done to slow the Cougars' mauling.
•••
Question One - Gideon Porter (The Universe): "Coach Leon, your defense did a great job of limiting the explosiveness of the BYU offense in the first half, but looked a step behind in the pivotal second as the Cougars pulled away through the aerial assault led by Bear Bachmeier. What adjustments did the Cougars make that caught your defense off guard and in retrospect, what should you have done differently?"
Armando Leon: "Yeah, Gideon, they came out of the second half with the clear intent of getting Bear in a rhythm and hats off to them, they took advantage of some mental lapses by our defense. Why we're crashing the line on an RPO instead of staying home and letting the front seven do their job, I do not know. We covered the RPO extensively over the last two weeks, both Oregon and now BYU love to use them in a variety of ways, and the talking point was always to stay home and worry about your assignment. Too many times in the second half, we crashed and left our assignment, and it bit us in the ass.
"It's easy to sit here and second-guess our game plan in the heat of the moment and I won't speak to things we should have done differently; that won't do us any favors. We'll watch the tape as a team, diagnose where we went wrong, and make plans to be better in the future. But sitting here and second-guessing every decision isn't going to do us any good. The game was lost and congratulations to BYU, they played a helluva game."
Question Two: Jedidiah Brent (Provo Tribune): "To double down on Gideon's question, Coach, but after the game against Oregon last week you bristled when asked if the Ducks targeted your secondary as the weakness of this unit. Yet, here we are a week later talking about the secondary's mental lapses. What are you going to need to address in the secondary going forward to keep teams from negating your explosive pass-rush and carving you up through the air?"
Armando Leon: "I think it's easy to take aim at the secondary after getting torched, but you take away the one big play from Hagen on the clear misplay and Bear is at just 250 yards. If you told me a week ago we'd keep another Heisman contender under 300 yards, I'd be happy. So I think calling the secondary the Achilles heel of the defense is low-hanging fruit at this point. I haven't looked at the national rankings yet, but even with today's performance I'm willing to bet our unit ranks in the top 25 of the country."
Question Three: Olivia LeRusso (Oregonlive): "I know you don't coach the offense, Coach Leon, but what do you have to say about Kallen Gutridge's performance in relief? And do you think the game could have turned out differently if the switch had been made earlier?"
Armando Leon: "You're right, Olivia, I don't. Kallen played a helluva fourth quarter trying to will us back in the game. If we hadn't given up four second-half touchdowns, we could have had a shot. That's on us; we gave up the points. I won't sit here and second-guess Coach Smith or Coach Dahlen's decisions to stick with their guy. They run the offense; my job is to keep it close enough for them to have a shot at winning the game. My unit didn't do that tonight, and I own it."
•••
Coach Leon won't say it, but I will. The Oregon State Beavers had ZERO touchdown passes going into this game, despite being 3-0, and Kallen Gutridge had two in a single quarter of work. His 160 yards in the quarter was more than Maddox had against Portland State. I've given AJ his time, waited patiently, but this isn't working.
He hasn't won us ANY games this season, the defense has, special teams has, and Salahadin Allah has. When Allah was finally bottled up, Maddox folded like a deck of cards. We can't expect the defense to play nearly 45 minutes on the field and not be gassed by the second half.
I will say, once the defense gave up the long touchdown out of the half it looked like their spirit was broken. With how terribly Maddox was playing, they knew anything more than a field goal and the game was already out of reach. They simply can't fold like that. If they keep the same intensity and let the touchdown be an abnormality, Gutridge has something to work with.
Neither Coach Smith nor Coach Dahlen commented on who would start next week in Oxford, but I think the answer is clear.
We need someone who is going to move the ball, not play scared. Maddox isn't looking to win games, he's looking not to lose them. Kallen Gutridge didn't have the best stats last year, but he did do one thing. Win. Ten times to be exact.

2027 Week Five Preview - Oregon State (3-1) @ #19 Ole Miss (3-0)
Ricky McKinley // Dam Daily • Published: October 1st, 2027
After the mauling the BYU Cougars handed to our beloved Beavers it would be nice to get a layup game for the squad to get their confidence back, but the Beavers will have no such luck as they hit the road for the third straight game. Oregon State will head to the Deep South to face the Ole Miss Rebels at Vaught-Hemmingway Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi, trying to avoid spoiling their hot 3-0 start with a second consecutive loss.
The problem? Ole Miss is one of the most electric offenses in the country averaging over 45 points and 450 yards per contest while dispatching Tennessee last week.
Before we catch up with Coach Mando in "Leon's Lowdown," let's take a look at how dominant the Rebels' offense has been in contrast to our own squad.

Leon's Lowdown
RM: "What does the club have to do this week to get the sour taste of last week's defeat out of their mouths and get back in the win column, Coach?"
AL: "It starts with accepting what happened last week. We went into Lavell Edwards Stadium feeling ourselves and the Cougars gave us a dose of reality. But we can't go into Oxford thinking we can cleanse those demons with a win against the Rebels. Last week is done; we lost. No changing that. But if we try and focus on avenging that loss, our mindset isn't where it needs to be. We've just got to get back to playing sound football, like we did for the first half of the Cougs' game, and remember who we are. Even with that loss, this defense still ranks top-five in both points and yards per game. We can't lose sight of that, or we're going to plummet down the rankings in a hurry."
RM: "The secondary seemed to get shredded by Bear Bachmeier last week and now will be without #2 cornerback Sailasa Vadrawale III for at least three games with a foot fracture. What is the defense going to need to do in his absence to keep last week's outing from becoming the norm?"
AL: "Next man up, Ricky. Trey and TJ are going to need to step up and fill that gap, because the scheme is the scheme. But, let's also put it in perspective. Bear is a Heisman contender for a reason, he's got talent and that offense is built to maximize his natural arm talent. Not every team we are going to play is going to be of that caliber. It's unfortunate with how our schedule stacked up with three straight explosive offenses in Oregon, BYU, and now Ole Miss, but after we get through this last game, we enter conference play. We have to weather one more storm, then it's fairly smooth sailing in my opinion."
RM: "Are you going on record that the Beavers are winning the Pac again? 'Cause based on that statement, you don't seem to think anyone in conference play can hold a candle to your squad."
AL: "I won't guarantee it, Ricky, already learned my lesson there. But I think we have to be the favorites, regardless of what happens tomorrow in Oxford. Our only loss in conference play last year was to Wazzou in the final game of the season. And we've improved from that squad, so anything less than a repeat appearance in the Championship game is a failure in our eyes."
RM: "One last question. Any insider info on who is going to be under center tomorrow? Is AJ going to get a chance at redemption in his old stomping grounds, or is Kallen's redemption arc loading?
AL: "You know I coach the defense, right? I'll know when you know, Ricky. On game day."
•••
I tried to get Coach Leon to spill the tea, but no dice. For what it's worth, I think it has to be Gutridge if the Beavers want a shot at winning. Maddox has done NOTHING to buoy confidence and now he's going into a pressure cooker against a formidable Ole Miss squad with expectations of beating his former team hanging over his head. I think it has to be Gutridge for us to have a shot and the fans I've heard from on X agree with me. But, coaches are stubborn. Coach Smith could stick to his guns and run with the guy we recruited.
So on that note, I'm not submitting a prediction this week. If we knew who would be at quarterback, I'd be throwing down. But the discrepancy of what I think Maddox would do, and what I believe Gutridge would add, makes it too much of a crapshoot.
I think our defense bounces back and continues to get after the quarterback—ranking 1st nationally with 23 sacks—but if they can't get some offensive support, it may be for naught.

Oregon State Does It Again With 21-Point Flurry In 4th Quarter To Stun Rebels
Ricky McKinley // Dam Daily • Published: October 2nd, 2027
The Oregon State Beavers shook off the ugly mauling in Provo last week and behind the redemption arc of Kallen Gutridge and a suffocating defense, stormed Oxford and handed the Ole Miss Rebels their first loss of the 2027 campaign.
Gutridge was far from perfect, throwing for under 200 yards and tossing a trio of interceptions, but he kept the defense honest and that opened up running room for Salahadin Allah, who rumbled for 147 yards and three touchdowns in the victory.
Early on, however, it looked like another strong start was going to be derailed by the ineffective offense. The Oregon State defense gave up a pair of big plays that led to both the scores they surrendered in the 1st half, with a 22-yard run by Shekai Mills-Knight setting up their opening drive field goal, then Tavon Wilkes slipping out of the backfield for a 62-yard screen pass touchdown. But the Beavers' offense scored on back-to-back drives between the 1st and 2nd quarters, keeping the pressure on Austin Simmons and the Rebels to keep the chains moving.
That is, until Gutridge threw the first of his three interceptions, all to Cortez Thomas, who promptly deposited it into the end zone for a touchdown. Gutridge and the offense would rally for a last-second field goal to send the game into the half tied at 17; it felt like a disappointing consolation after the interception.
Then Gutridge ended two straight drives in the third quarter with interceptions, both going to Thomas again as the safety nabbed a trio of picks in the contest. The Beavers' defense fought back, defending the short field twice and forcing field goals. But trailing 23-17 entering the 4th, it was clear that the Beavers' offense needed to do something.
Oregon State's defense almost took care of the job for them, sacking Austin Simmons on the 1-inch line, as the right cleat of Simmons kept him from absorbing a safety, and with their own short field the Beavers finally broke through the Rebels' defenses. Salahadin Allah burst through for 39 yards, pushing Oregon State in front by a point with just under three minutes remaining.
And that's when the Rebels unraveled. Facing 4th-and-10 with just over two minutes left, Simmons' pass into double coverage was swatted down and Allah once again made them pay for the short field with his third touchdown of the game. Then Simmons completely imploded, tossing a duck to the outside that Trey Glasper, who is starting in place of the injured Vadrawale, rose up, secured, then took to the house for his own pick six.
The celebration for the Beavers was short lived, however, as Simmons connected on a 52-yard bomb to Dillon Alfred to push the Ole Miss offense into the red zone. With 22 seconds remaining, Simmons was able to squeeze a pass into Alexander, but once the onside bounced into the Beavers' hands, it was all over but the crying.
Let's take it to Armando Leon now at the post-game presser as he addresses yet another top-25 upset for his Beavers.
•••
Question One - Dillon Lewis (The Daily Mississippian): "Your secondary was a big question mark going into this contest after the performance Bear Bachmeier put together in addition to the injury to Sailasa Vadrawale III. What changes did you make to the game plan, if any, to accommodate for not only the loss of Vadrawale, but the high-octane Rebels offense?"
Armando Leon: "I'm going to start sounding like a parrot up here, but it all starts with hitting the quarterback. You saw it from the opening drive. Mills-Knight slashed through our defense for 39 yards on the 1st play from scrimmage, but facing 3rd-and-goal from the seven, Jadyn nailed Simmons for a huge sack. We hit him a bunch, tallied four sacks, and that was our game plan. Make him skittish enough that even when the secondary had lapses, which there was bound to be with moving parts, it didn't hurt us too much."
Question Two - Franklin DeLarux (The Oxford Eagle): "You mentioned that there was bound to be lapses in the secondary with so many moving parts, is that what you attribute the couple of big passing plays in the game, most notably the 62-yard touchdown to Wilkes and the 52-yard catch by Alfredo near the end of the game?"
Armando Leon: "Yes and no, Franklin. On Wilkes' touchdown; 100% mental lapse. The safety who was supposed to rotate over in man coverage decided to go with the crosser, which was already the weak-side backer's responsibility. That happens; and no one is there to account for the running back and once Mills-Knight gets a head of steam, watch out. Alfredo's catch was all him, heck of a play. TJ Crandall was in great position; Alfredo just made a better catch. We're going to give up a few big plays, but I'm proud of my guys for rallying to keep them to field goals for the most part. And let's take a minute to recognize their resiliency. Twice in the second half, the Rebels had a short field and no one would have blamed us if they earned touchdowns. But we held, forced the field goals, and bought enough time for Allah to run free. That's what we need to do to win, period."
Question Three - Olivia LeRusso (Oregonlive): "Coach, you were asked on the Dam Daily pod about the starters and indicated you had no clue. Was it a last-minute decision by Coach Smith and Coach Dahlen to start Gutridge, or was that already in place well before you boarded the plane?"
Armando Leon: "Coach Smith let us know on the plane who he was going with. That's how down to the wire it got. But credit to Kallen. Detractors will look at the interceptions and say he put us in a bad spot, but he also put up the points to atone for it. It's amazing what having a deep ball threat at quarterback does to a defense. Suddenly Allah was running buck wild out there."

I wouldn't call Gutridge's performance awe-inspiring, but it lived up to his name. It was gutsy. He could have folded after the pair of interceptions in the second half, no one would have questioned it. But instead, he buckled his chinstrap and did enough to keep the defense honest and open the lanes for Allah. That's all we needed, someone to part the Red Sea.
The interceptions are concerning; there is no glossing over that. One thing AJ Maddox did extremely well was limit turnovers, but you could argue that was because he didn't take chances. A poor man's Aaron Rodgers, if you will. Gutridge has that gunslinger in him; he's going to try and get his at any opportunity.
I say let him keep the reins and see if he can take this team on a run. Best-case scenario, he takes over and Maddox bounces once again in the portal. Worst? Gutridge is who we thought he was, and we're back at square one.
Either way, for now? We're 4-1 with a pair of top-25 upsets to our name. And it feels Dam good.
