Football runs through Dallas, Mustangs run all over Longhorns in Top-25 matchup

Image
‣ He may have only made one catch on the night, but tight end Lionel Davenport managed to come down with an impressive snag with a Texas defender draped all over him

Score

FINAL 1 2 3 4 T
#1 SMU 7 8 7 7 29
#19 Texas 0 10 7 0 17

Game Summary

"We wanted Texas because we wanted to prove we run this [expletive] state. I believe we did that this evening," said SMU head coach Nico Augustine after the SMU Mustangs defeated the Texas Longhorns in College Football's Game of the Week, working past them 29-17 thanks to their stout run game and their high-pressure defense.

He might have a point.

The Mustangs completely outpaced the Longhorns from the jump, getting an early lead behind running back Brian Volson ripping a redzone run right through the heart of the Longhorns' defense to get the party started. Texas' superstar wide receiver Stephen Dekker would rip past Mustangs' number one cornerback, Jameson Cotton, for a 47-yard rip into the endzone.

It was a common problem for SMU since Augustine landed the job a few years ago. A stout defensive line that gets pressure just for the secondary to bust in their coverage, allowing Texas to get out of jail free when Longhorns quarterback Soma Hunt should be struggling. "We need to get better at reading routes and being on the same page," commented defensive coordinator Griffin McCauley, who held a similar problem when Augustine was offensive coordinator at Arkansas State. "We need to take some pride in all four quarters - not just when the chips are down."

Quarterback Alonzo Cheeseman took better care of the football this time around compared to last week against Alabama. He was concise, calculated, and consistent in his throws; managing two touchdowns in the second half to wide receivers Marquis Avant and Tomas Smoker to push the lead too far out of the Longhorns' reach.

The Mustangs will make the short journey back to Dallas to face off against bitter rivals TCU for the Battle for the Iron Skillet.

Damn good start to the campaign. ACC should be a win, even with all the ranked squads you gotta go through.

Five running backs with at least five carries is the type of segregation era football you and Soapy love playing.

Still fleshing out who should get the most carries, won't be five running backs for much longer.

If we get to our bye week undefeated, we'll be straight. Texas and Alabama were arguably our two toughest matches.
