Cork City 1 - 1 Wexford FC | First Division Highlights

Late drama at Turner's Cross as Dobbs strike earns Wexford a hard-fought point.

Wexford FC battled to a tense 1–1 draw against Cork City in another closely contested clash between two of the division’s strongest sides. In a physical and tactical encounter at Turner's Cross, both teams showed why they remain near the summit, with late goals and missed chances creating a dramatic finish.

Cork City controlled much of the early possession, pressing high and attempting to break down Wexford’s organised defensive structure. The visitors remained patient, absorbing pressure while looking to strike through quick transitions led by Sverre Nypan and Ovidio Lopez.

Despite Cork’s territorial advantage, clear opportunities were limited thanks to a disciplined Wexford back line marshalled by captain Robbie McCourt. Goalkeeper Alex Moody remained alert when called upon, ensuring the match remained scoreless heading into the latter stages.

Wexford were forced into changes midway through the second half after Aron Gunnarsson picked up an injury, prompting a reshuffle that ultimately influenced the flow of the game. Substitute Aaron Dobbs quickly made his presence felt, adding pace and directness to the attacking play.

Team Lineups

Cork City 4-2-3-1: T. Troost, D. Crowley, F. Anderson, C. Lyons, B. Couto, C. O'Sullivan, G. Bolger (C), A. Nolan, M. Dijksteel, Z. Dunne, S. Maguire.

Subs: H. Nevin for D. Crowley (63'), Z. Dunner for C. Drinan (73'), S. Bailey for F. Anderson (82').

Wexford FC 4-2-3-1: A. Moody, D. Dunne, D. Larkin, R. McCourt (C), E. Osam, C. Levingston, A. Gunnarsson, Z. Abada, S. Nypan, O. Lopez, M. Rowe.

Subs: A. Dobbs for O. Lopez (73'), F. Wasilewski for A. Gunnarsson (Injury) (73'), C. Flynn for M. Rowe (77'), K. Harnett for S. Nypan (77').

Player of the match: Aaron Dobbs 7.1 (WEX) – 1 Goal.
Introduced from the bench, Dobbs provided energy and composure, scoring the crucial opener with a counter attack from the halfway line. Heavily influenced Wexford’s attacking momentum late in the match.

The breakthrough arrived in the 76th minute when substitute Aaron Dobbs finished clinically to give Wexford a deserved lead after an incredible solo run after the ball was cleared from a corner. The visitors looked set to claim all three points moments later when Cork were awarded a penalty, but Seanie Maguire missed from the spot, giving Wexford a lifeline.

However, Cork continued to press and eventually found an equaliser in the 86th minute through Maguire, who made amends with a composed finish to level the score. The closing minutes were frantic, with both sides pushing for a winner, but strong defensive organisation ensured the points were shared.

In a match filled with intensity and late drama, Wexford demonstrated resilience and squad depth, while Cork City once again proved difficult to break down at home.

Definitely looking good to win the league here. How are you feeling about navigating European qualifiers? Think you have what it takes to sneak in?

No Europe for First Division. Only premier division. Unless I win the FAI Cup. Have St Pats this month. That gets me Conference league playoffs. But long road to winning that.

Anytime I read something about Ireland, I think Father Ted. Just expecting a priest shouting Fek Off! or Gobsh!te from the stands, every time something doesn't go right for Wexford. I like the concept of getting to the top league first.

Oof. I thought the First Division was the Premier Division. That long save with Cork City on FM threw me off with them being there with you. :mybad:
